Book excerpt: This book, while acknowledging the importance of macro-studies on unemployment which traditionally remain a concern of the economists, deals with the dynamics of the quality of experiences of educated youth in the context of unemployment problem in India. It deals with the questions- how do the educated youth react to the unemployment problem and how do they cope with the prevalent prospects and challenges? through the study of their perceptions and attributions of unemployment problem. While addressing specific issues, it has tried to pool together the extensive Western and the limited Indian research on effects of unemployment on psychological well-being and coping behaviours among the most sensitive groups: job seekers and job losers , in the domain of social psychology of unemployment. It reveals that the negative effects of unemployment problem strike deep into the psyche of educated youth and dampen their expectations. The salience and perceived applicability of knowledge base, and beliefs attached to unemployment, remain important determinants of differential experiences of unemployment. It argues that steps towards labour market flexibility may not solve the unemployment problem, as such, it is the time to guide educated youth to cope up the challenges through mechanisms that facilitate attitudinal changes and positive thinking so that human resources are channelised for development processes. It presents some guidelines for potential intervention efforts, which would be useful for education and employment policy makers and planners, psychologists and counsellors, researchers and institutions; concerned with the unemployment problem and its human and social consequences.

In writing it I had two main aims: (1) to describe theoretical approaches that are relevant to understanding unemployment effects; and (2) to present the re sults of studies from a program of research with which I have been closely involved over recent years. In order to meet these aims I have organized the book into two main parts. I discuss background research and theoretical approaches in the first half of the book, beginning with research concerned with the psychological effects of unemployment during the Great Depression and continuing through to a dis cussion of more recent contributions. I have not attempted to review the liter ature in fine detail. Instead, I refer to some of the landmark studies and to the main theoretical ideas that have been developed. This discussion takes us through theoretical approaches that have emerged from the study of work, employment, and unemployment to a consideration of wider frameworks that can also be applied to further our understanding of unemployment effects.

Research has thus far tended to concentrate on the economic aspects of unemployment, and there are virtually no publications originating from African research on the pyschological impact. Meanwhile psychological research emanating from developed countries tends to be of limited relevance to the African social context. This pyschological study within a specific African context is thus breaking new ground. It focuses on the vast number of young, unskilled, male 'street unemployed', many of whom have migrated from the rural areas to the cities, providing insights into their daily struggle to find, or survive without, work, against social expectation, and with no welfare provision. It considers the impact on self-esteem and mental and physical health; and analyses job- seeking behaviour, depression, alcoholism, experiences of time, coping with 'loss of control and future orientation. The study also appraises psychological methods and theories and their relevance for the African context, notably the theory of 'learned helplessness'. and discusses pyschological aspects of economic development.
