Book The Tolls of Uncertainty

Download or read book The Tolls of Uncertainty written by Sarah Damaske and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable investigation into the American unemployment system and the ways gender and class affect the lives of those looking for work Through the intimate stories of those seeking work, The Tolls of Uncertainty offers a startling look at the nation’s unemployment system—who it helps, who it hurts, and what, if anything, we can do to make it fair. Drawing on interviews with one hundred men and women who have lost jobs across Pennsylvania, Sarah Damaske examines the ways unemployment shapes families, finances, health, and the job hunt. Damaske demonstrates that commonly held views of unemployment are either incomplete or just plain wrong. Shaped by a person’s gender and class, unemployment generates new inequalities that cast uncertainties on the search for work and on life chances beyond the world of work, threatening opportunity in America. Following in depth the lives of four individuals over the course of their unemployment experiences, Damaske offers insights into how the unemployed perceive their relationship to work. She reveals the high levels of blame that women who have lost jobs place on themselves, leading them to put their families’ needs above their own, sacrifice their health, and take on more tasks inside the home. This “guilt gap” illustrates how unemployment all too often exacerbates existing differences between men and women. Class privilege, too, gives some an advantage, while leaving others at the mercy of an underfunded unemployment system. Middle-class men are generally able to create the time and space to search for good work, but many others are bogged down by the challenges of poverty-level unemployment benefits and family pressures and fall further behind. Timely and engaging, The Tolls of Uncertainty posits that a new path must be taken if the nation’s unemployed are to find real relief.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Job Loss and Job Search

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Job Loss and Job Search written by Ute-Christine Klehe PhD and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Job search is and always has been an integral part of people's working lives. Whether one is brand new to the labor market or considered a mature, experienced worker, job seekers are regularly met with new challenges in a variety of organizational settings. Edited by Ute-Christine Klehe and Edwin A.J. van Hooft, The Oxford Handbook of Job Loss and Job Search provides readers with one of the first comprehensive overviews of the latest research and empirical knowledge in the areas of job loss and job search. Multidisciplinary in nature, Klehe, van Hooft, and their contributing authors offer fascinating insight into the diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives from which job loss and job search have been studied, such as psychology, sociology, labor studies, and economics. Discussing the antecedents and consequences of job loss, as well as outside circumstances that may necessitate a more rigorous job hunt, this Handbook presents in-depth and up-to-date knowledge on the methods and processes of this important time in one's life. Further, it examines the unique circumstances faced by different populations during their job search, such as those working job-to-job, the unemployed, mature job seekers, international job seekers, and temporary employed workers. Job loss and unemployment are among the worst stressors individuals can encounter during their lifetimes. As a result, this Handbook concludes with a discussion of the various types of interventions developed to aid the unemployed. Further, it offers readers important insights and identifies best practices for both scholars and practitioners working in the areas of job loss, unemployment, career transitions, outplacement, and job search.

Book The Mortality Crisis in Transitional Economies

Download or read book The Mortality Crisis in Transitional Economies written by Giovanni Andrea Cornia and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-08-03 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of widespread expectations of improvements in living standards and health conditions, in most of the countries of the former Soviet bloc the transition to the market economy was accompanied by a sharp increase in (already high) death rates. Such an increase provoked an 'excess mortality' of some three million people over the period 1989-96 alone, an unprecedented phenomenon in peacetime. Such a crisis remains poorly explained, has generated a limited policy response in the countries concerned and international organizations, and is bound to generate important political and economic repercussions. This book is the first comprehensive assessment of the mortality crisis in transitional economies, of its causes, and of its remedies on the basis - among others - of micro data sets and quasi-panels on health trends which have never been used before. Contributions by demographers, economists, sociologists, epidemiologists, and health experts provide a rigorous analysis of the upsurge in mortality rates, with the aim of contributing to the launch of vigorous policies to tackle the crisis.

Book On Unemployment Volume II

Download or read book On Unemployment Volume II written by Mark R. Reiff and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With unemployment at historically high rates that show signs of becoming structural, there is a pressing need for an in-depth exploration of this economic injustice. Unemployment is one of the problems most likely to put critical pressure on our political institutions, disrupt the social fabric of our way of life, and even threaten the continuation of liberalism itself. Despite the obvious importance of the problem of unemployment, however, there has been a curious lack of attention paid to this issue by contemporary non-Marxist political philosophers. On Unemployment explores the moral implications of the problem of unemployment despite the continuing uncertainty involving both its causes and its cures. Reiff takes up a series of questions about the nature of unemployment and what justice has to tell us about what we should do, if anything, to alleviate it. The book comprehensively discusses the related theory and suggests how we might implement these more general observations in the real world. It addresses the politics of unemployment and the extent to which opposition to some or all of the book's various proposals stem not from empirical disagreements about the best solutions, but from more basic moral disagreements about whether the reduction of unemployment is indeed an appropriate moral goal. This exciting new text will be essential for scholars and readers across business, economics, and finance, as well as politics, philosophy, and sociology.

Book For the Soon Unemployed

Download or read book For the Soon Unemployed written by John-Talmage Mathis and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fired... Quit... A New Start... Or Just Fed Up... Let this book serve as your lantern to a brighter tomorrow. self-help * employment * entrepreneurship * self-discovery "I'm aware of the mixed feelings and emotions during this time of your job loss. There are knots in your stomach that serve as a reminder of the impeding concerns. You're anxious about tomorrow's turmoil. I know these feelings. I've felt them too during my times of unemployment. This means I've ventured through the valleys of uncertainty -- more than once." The book focuses on self-help, self-discovery, entrepreneurship, and employment. The chapters are transitional, and the hope of the book is to reawaken the reader's motivation -- to give some sense of direction by allowing the author's defeats give insight into the looming uncertainties that exist in an unemployed person's mind. "Unemployed or fearing unemployed, start at square one. Do as nature does. Squirrels gather acorns and bears prepare for hibernation; you too must gather your own acorns and prepare for hibernation." Whether terminated, fired, discharged, laid off, or aware of an upcoming turmoil, it's the actions taken now that will determine whether life becomes bountiful with enjoyment, or if this phase in life becomes an experience comparable to hell. "Electricity, shelter, and a safe place to sleep ... trump the need to preserve your credit score, or purchase a new gizmo." With unemployment at staggering new heights, many have lost their job. The question then becomes: What now? What does one do when abandoned by their second family? Too often the newspaper headlines inform us of the thousands, or millions, of jobs lost. It has become routine to read about the new round of layoffs -- so much so that it's discussed on porches in the same manner as approaching bad weather. And from this, many tend to blame themselves, and some will fall into a depression. Whatever is felt by you, understand that this experience isn't something to personalize; the termination was a business calculation. Put this ordeal behind you and move forward. Sure, rough patches and doubt will exist, but with a plan and preparation, this hurdle in life may soon prove to be the most enlightening. The book examines the route to take to become an entrepreneur. The book also contains exercises to guide you in finding your near ideal job. Learn how to choose a suit for a job interview, learn how to raise capital for new ventures, and ultimately, learn how to enjoy life. You will see the importance of discovering your life-balance. You will also learn how to invest in your own life portfolio. Reviews -------- "Prepare to be enlightened. Prepare to be a little disappointed, and even a little shocked at times as the author peels backs the cover on a part of America rarely seen. Prepare to be better informed about an eventual end more and more Americans are facing in this new economy. Long before the final page, you'll be glad you picked up this book." --Lee Adams, Comedian, and contributor "To say this book is a helpful guide for the unemployed would be grossly undervaluing its worth. While Mathis does give excellent advice for people seeking employment, he delves much deeper." -- BookAddict "This is a highly intelligent, well-written and insightful guide for those facing unemployment. In the introduction, it exposes in detail (using real examples and case studies) the often blatant greed and immorality of corporate America." -- Anna Elizabeth "He motivates, gives the hard truths, then follows-up with advice." -- Robin "If you are worried about not having a job soon, or have already lost your job, this book will help you turn your life around and put it back where you want it to be." -- Andrew David "I've ordered copies for my friends who are in a similar situation as well." -- Mark "You will find yourself "Recharged" and ready for the next step toward your future." -- 4moreshelflife

Book excerpt: With unemployment percentages in the double digits, there are hundreds of thousands of Americans who are struggling. Serious questions are being asked about how to cope with the everyday spiritual and emotional circumstance of being outside the workforce. The unemployed life seems full of confusion, loneliness, and frustration. The longer the job search lasts, the longer life seems an endless experience of wandering in a wilderness of disappointment and unresolved questions. Prayers seem to go unanswered to the point that we wonder what God is doing to us or for us, and we cry out to Him in worry and need. How do we handle the circumstance? What does God expect from us during a time that often seems like we are stranded out in the desert and not making any progress? Unemployed: Life in the Wilderness gives the reader a practical guide to learning and growing spiritually while unemployed, and is written from the perspective of one who has traveled through that same desert experience. Author Len M. Allen addresses the top eight issues faced during any significant period of unemployment in a format comfortable for individual reading or group discussion. He clarifies concerns about anger, fear, prayer, God's provision, strength, courage, encouragement, integrity, disappointment, seeking God's will, and waiting on Him, all with the jobless in mind. Book excerpt: How to help the unemployed? This subject developed by Henry George is more relevant to our time when unemployment becomes a major problem. Henry George, famous for his book titled Progress and Poverty, was American political economist who developed a "tax reform" project and promoted economic philosophy based on the equal right of all men to the use of the earth. The economic value derived from land and natural resources should belong equally to all members of society. "Why should charity be offered the unemployed? It is not alms they ask. They are insulted and embittered and degraded by being forced to accept as paupers what they would gladly earn as workers. What they ask is not charity, but the opportunity to use their own labor in satisfying their own wants. Why can they not have that? It is their natural right. He who made food and clothing and shelter necessary to man's life has also given to man, in the power of labor, the means of maintaining that life; and when, without fault of their own, men cannot exert that power, there is somewhere a wrong of the same kind as denial of the right of property and denial of the right of life..."

Vincent and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the late Bob Marley (R.I.P) so rightly sang, "Who feels it knows it!" While you can read many books out there that have been written by Ph.D. titled persons, who, I have no doubt, are well respected in their various professional fields, most of them can only offer you 'classroom' tactics of how to cope with and survive unemployment because they have never been unemployed themselves. I have been unemployed for more than five (5) years. So, I have felt the sting and scourge of unemployment and I KNOW, in a very real and intimate way, what being unemployed feels like. In this book, I share with you some of my own unemployment challenges. At the end of each of the 15 chapters I also share with you some precise activities that you can immediately implement. In chapter 15, I share some sound financial advice from my cumulative financial qualifications and experience as an M.B.A graduate in International Finance, Portfolio Manager, Associate Professor in Finance & Business etc.

Book Anthropologies of Unemployment

Download or read book Anthropologies of Unemployment written by Jong Bum Kwon and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropologies of Unemployment offers accessible, theoretically innovative, and ethnographically rich examinations of unemployment in rural and urban regions across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. The diversity of case studies demonstrates that unemployment is a pressing global phenomenon that sheds light on the uneven consequences of free-market ideologies and policies. Economic, social, and cultural marginalization is common in the lives of the unemployed, but their experience and interpretation are shaped by local and national cultural particularities. In exploring those differences, the contributors to this volume employ recent theoretical innovations and engage with some of the more salient topics in contemporary anthropology, such as globalization, migration, youth cultures, bureaucracy, class, gender, and race. Taken together, the chapters reveal that there is something new about unemployment today. It is not a temporary occurrence, but a chronic condition. In adjusting to persistent, longstanding unemployment, people and groups create new understandings of unemployment as well as of work and employment; they improvise new forms of sociality, morality, and personhood. Ethnographic studies such as those found in Anthropologies of Unemployment are crucial if we are to understand the broader forms, meanings, and significance of pervasive economic insecurity and discover the emergence of new social and cultural possibilities.

Book Dissatisfied with Life but Having a Good Day

Download or read book Dissatisfied with Life but Having a Good Day written by Andreas Knabe and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We apply the Day Reconstruction Method to compare unemployed and employed people with respect to their subjective assessment of emotional affects, differences in the composition and duration of activities during the course of a day, and their self-reported life satisfaction. Employed persons are more satisfied with their life than the unemployed and report more positive feelings when engaged in similar activities. Weighting these activities with their duration shows, however, that average experienced utility does not differ between the two groups. Although the unemployed feel sadder when engaged in similar activities, they can compensate this by using the time the employed are at work in more enjoyable ways. Our finding that unemployment affects life satisfaction and experienced utility differently may be explained by the fact that people do not adjust their aspirations when becoming unemployed but face hedonic adaptation to changing life circumstances, triggered by the opportunity to use the time in a way that yields higher levels of satisfaction than working.
