Book Urban Unemployment in Colombia

Download or read book Urban Unemployment in Colombia written by Robert L. Slighton and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis is presented of the dimensions and characteristics of urban unemployment in Colombia. About 10 percent to 16 percent of the labor force in the larger cities are unemployed, and unemployment is increasing. It is four to six times greater than it was 15 years ago. The unemployment rate is likely to double within the next 6 to 7 years if Colombia's future rate of growth of output is the same as its historic rate. The urban unemployed are younger than the employed and less educated; however, the relationship between unemployment and education is weak. There is no evidence to suggest that the rising unemployment rate is the result of a large increase in the number of unemployed migrants who have come from the countryside to the cities. Two important conclusions emerge from the study: (1) The urban unemployment problem is sufficiently important to warrant increased effort in the collection of data concerning its magnitude. (2) Urban unemployment is a more serious problem today than it was 3 years ago, and, unless there is a sharp change in the rate and pattern of growth of total output, it will become an even more pressing economic problem in the near future. Book Alternatives To Unemployment And Underemployment

Download or read book Alternatives To Unemployment And Underemployment written by Michael Hopkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of jobs is critical in Third World countries where growing populations face unemployment or inadequate employment. Many have put forth theories and suggestions that address this problem, but there has been insufficient empirical analysis of the effects of specific policies on employment growth. The author examines macroeconomic theories of labour market behavior and labour force definitions and concepts, assessing how productive they are in formulating employment strategies for Colombia. The implications of a range of alternative policies for generating jobs, their effectiveness in reducing unemployment, and possible programs for the future are analyzed.

Book Urban Poor Perceptions of Violence and Exclusion in Colombia

Download or read book Urban Poor Perceptions of Violence and Exclusion in Colombia written by Caroline O. N. Moser and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis in Columbia represents a challenge to the economy, the institutions and the values of its society. Columbia remains plagued by violence despite sustained improvements in its social and economic indicators. The perception of this violence by people living in poor communities is the subject of this report. Local communities identified the pervasive nature of political violence, the problem of displaced persons, and the lack of employment that leads to drug use, crime and violence. Suggested approaches were to create job opportunities; attack the problem of drug use; reduce society's tolerance for intrahousehold violence; rebuild trust in the police and judicial system; strengthen community-based organisations, particularly those run by women; target interventions at young people.

Book excerpt: The turn of the century has been a moment of rapid urbanization. Much of this urban growth is taking place in the cities of the developing world and much of it in informal settlements. This book presents cutting-edge research from various world regions to demonstrate these trends. The contributions reveal that informal housing is no longer the domain of the urban poor; rather it is a significant zone of transactions for the middle-class and even transnational elites. Indeed, the book presents a rich view of "urban informality" as a system of regulations and norms that governs the use of space and makes possible new forms of social and political power. The book is organized as a "transnational" endeavor. It brings together three regional domains of research--the Middle East, Latin America, and South Asia--that are rarely in conversation with one another. It also unsettles the hierarchy of development and underdevelopment by looking at some First World processes of informality through a Third World research lens.

Book International Handbook of Urban Policy

Download or read book International Handbook of Urban Policy written by H. S. Geyer and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important Handbook reveals that most urban growth takes place in the less developed world and much of it represents over-urbanization that is, urbanization in which most migrants cannot effectively compete for employment, cannot find adequate shelter and do not have the means to feed themselves properly. Yet, compared to rural poverty, urban poverty is widely regarded as the lesser of the two evils. H.S. Geyer and his contributors highlight the enormous challenges posed by urbanization to decision makers at all levels of government. This final volume, in a series of three original reference works, covers four broad themes including: urban growth patterns; spatial issues; policy issues; and urban growth determinants. The chapters have been written not only for the advanced student and academics but also with undergraduate students in mind. The Handbook will appeal to scholars and researchers interested in international urban development issues.

Book Trade and Employment in Developing Countries Volume 1

Download or read book Trade and Employment in Developing Countries Volume 1 written by Anne O. Krueger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book of a three-volume study examines the way trade policies in developing countries affect the level and composition of employment. There is special emphasis on the effects of import substitution policies that attempt to make a country self-sufficient by producing local substitutes for imports, as compared with policies that further the expansion of imports. Ten countries are studied: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, the Ivory Coast, Pakistan, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay. The contributors to the volume analyze the link between trade strategies and employment within a common framework, and the analyses of trade policy include the level and structure of protection, the relation of trade policy to labor demand, the labor intensiveness of trade, and the extent of distortions in factor markets and their effects on trade.
