Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many ways in which the Church has missed the mark set for it by Jesus—that it would love God and neighbor and that it would preach, teach, and serve. In missing the mark, the Church has caused harm, often to the very people that Jesus called the Church to love and serve. This is a challenge to the Church to be honest about who and what it has become. This is a call to the Church to confess its selfishness and preferences and how they have led it to be of service to itself at the expense of everyone else. This is an effort to own the harm that we, the Church, have caused. This is an attempt at entering into a conversation with the people who have been harmed or left behind by the Church. If the Church is to be effective in the work Jesus has given it to do, the Church must repent of its selfishness, seek forgiveness for the harm it has caused, and be rebuilt on the foundation that Jesus laid out. That cannot happen until we Unearth the Church.

Book Christianity in Western and Northern Europe

Download or read book Christianity in Western and Northern Europe written by Todd M. Johnson and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the origins of Christianity lie in the Near East, Europe and Christianity have an exceptional relationship, since most Europeans perceive Christianity as a Western - more precisely, as a European - religion. The region has seen rapid social change in the 21st century, set off by factors including energy crisis and environmental awareness, poverty and exclusion, falling birthrates and increased migration, changing attitudes to sexuality, gender and family life, and challenges to Europe's idea of itself and place in the global order. Amidst all this flux, this volume focuses on one particular issue: the rapidly changing profile of the Christian faith that has shaped the life of the European continent for a millennium and more.At a time when patterns of Christian life and worship appear to be dying out, yet traces of new life are also appearing, this volume maps out the current reality of Christianity in Western and Northern Europe with all its questions and uncertainties.

Book Black Theology Slavery and Contemporary Christianity

Download or read book Black Theology Slavery and Contemporary Christianity written by Anthony G. Reddie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Theology, Slavery and Contemporary Christianity explores the legacy of slavery in Black theological terms. Challenging the dominant approaches to the history and legacy of slavery in the British Empire, the contributors show that although the 1807 act abolished the slave trade, it did not end racism, notions of White supremacy, or the demonization of Blackness, Black people and Africa. This interdisciplinary study draws on biblical studies, history, missiology and Black theological reflection, exploring the strengths and limitations of faith as the framework for abolitionist rhetoric and action. This Black theological approach to the phenomenon of the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the institution of slavery draws on contributions from Africa, the Caribbean, North America and Europe.

Book excerpt: Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like a treasure buried in a desolate field that one would sell all of his possessions to attain. Yet the shocking reality is that this treasure remains buried as the average Christian and Church are sadly unaware of what the Kingdom of God is or why it even matters. In his revealing first work, Brandon Andress writes that while the Christian and the Church continue to chase their tails in pursuit of an identity and purpose in the world, it is ultimately the unearthing of the Kingdom of God that will transform the Church and change the world. While walking simplistically through the parables of Jesus to get a better understanding of Kingdom of God, this book will also convince and inspire you and your Church to be the means through which the Kingdom of God breaks into the world in power.

Book Creative Bible Teaching

  • Author : Lawrence O. Richards
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers

  • ISBN : 1575675358

Download or read book Creative Bible Teaching written by Lawrence O. Richards and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a bridge builder? Communicating the Scriptures is much like building a bridge. However, instead of ravines or rivers, the teacher must span both cultural boundaries and great gulfs of time between the present and the past of Moses, David, Jesus, and Paul. This bridge must reach even further. The student must be able to cross both into the past and into his own future. God's Word is "living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12). It is contemporary, relevant. But it is the teacher who has the task of helping the student to see its vast treasures. This is no easy task, but it can be done through creative Bible teaching. Together, Richards and Bredfeldt have written a book on bridge-building that reveals the following five-step process by which Christian educators can construct a bridge across time, geography, and culture. Step I: "Studying the Bible" Develop an understanding of the nature, role, study, and interpretation of the Bible. Get the help you need in preparing biblically accurate lesson plans. Step II: "Focusing the Message" Learn how to teach for student learning. Be guided in the process of translating learning theory into lesson preparation. Step III: "Structuring the Lesson" Develop a lesson plan using the HOOK, BOOK, LOOK, TOOK structure. Step IV: "Teaching the Class" Learn about the five key principles of teacher effectiveness. Discover how these principles can lead to a more dynamic and satisfying teaching experience within various age groups. Step V: "Evaluating the Results" Evaluate your own effectiveness by assessing the outcome of your teaching.

Book Aquinas on Israel and the Church

Download or read book Aquinas on Israel and the Church written by Matthew A Tapie and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theologians have long debated the significance of the Jewish religion for the Christian Church. Some scholars see Thomas Aquinas as the leading advocate of the belief that Israel has been superceded by the Church, while others hold that Aquinas avoids supersessionism altogether. The discussion has, however, not always analysed the terminology, nor has it taken into account some of Aquinas's commentaries on Paul's letters, his writings most relevant to the subject. Drawing upon the Pauline commentaries, Matthew Tapie shows that while Aquinas's most commonly articulated view is that the passion of Christ made Jewish worship and the Mosaic law obsolete, Aquinas also advanced views that set this into question, in ways that support Christianteachings affirming the value of post-biblical Judaism. In doing so, he provides both a rich and timely reminder of the ambiguities in Aquinas's thought and makes an important contribution to the literature of supersessionism.

Book Walking Together Student Workbook

Download or read book Walking Together Student Workbook written by Wyman Lewis Richardson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Walking Together: A Congregational Reflection' on Biblical Church Discipline is a study of the biblical concept of church discipline. It seeks to show that church discipline, rightly understood, is a ministry of mercy and grace that will bless churches that return to it. Walking Together reveals that church discipline was a ministry that was very important to earlier believers, and that the modern church has abandoned it to her own detriment. It is a clarion call for individuals and churches to come back to this vital but long-neglected aspect of congregational and personal life. By doing so, churches can be healed and interpersonal relationships can be restored.

Book Many Colors

  • ISBN : 9781575674971
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Many Colors written by Soong-Chan Rah and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is currently undergoing the most rapid demographic shift in its history. By 2050, white Americans will no longer comprise a majority of the population. Instead, they'll be the largest minority group in a country made up entirely of minorities, followed by Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans. Past shifts in America's demographics always reshaped the county's religious landscape. This shift will be no different. Soong-Chan Rah's book is intended to equip evangelicals for ministry and outreach in our changing nation. Borrowing from the business concept of "cultural intelligence," he explores how God's people can become more multiculturally adept. From discussions about cultural and racial histories, to reviews of case-study churches and Christian groups that are succeeding in bridging ethnic divides, Rah provides a practical and hopeful guidebook for Christians wanting to minister more effectively in diverse settings. Without guilt trips or browbeating, the book will spur individuals, churches, and parachurch ministries toward more effectively bearing witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Good News for people of every racial and cultural background. Its message is positive; its potential impact, transformative.

Book Gift to the Church and World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books in theology have faced the twentieth century with all its horrors and yet revoiced the redemptive Christian antidote as convincingly as Joseph Ratzinger's 1968 masterpiece, Introduction to Christianity. In Gift to Church and World, John Cavadini and Donald Wallenfang present papers from the conference held at the University of Notre Dame to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of this classic book's publication and, through it, Ratzinger's lasting influence on the world of Christian theology. Bishops, priests, and lay men and women set their hands to 'the trowel of tribute,' honoring the legacy of Joseph Ratzinger and the pivotal role he has played in the recent history of the Catholic Church. Covering Ratzinger's work on fundamental theology, philosophical theology, dogmatic theology, spiritual theology, and pedagogy, the essays gathered here shed new light on Ratzinger's theological genius. Throughout, the authors return to his compelling expression of the divine call to reawaken to our true identity as beloved children of God. Altogether, readers will deepen their appreciation and understanding of the theological contributions of Joseph Ratzinger, and his continued relevance to mission and evangelisation today.
