Book excerpt: Etant donné son importance et sa difficulté, la segmentation d'images est actuellement un des domaines les plus étudiés en analyse d'images. Un grand nombre d'opérateurs de segmentation ont été développés et sont décrits dans la littérature. Malgré la complexité de certains de ces opérateurs, des études comparatives récentes nous montrent qu'il n'y a aucune technique qui se détache pour prétendre le titre de "la meilleure méthode". Il se pose alors un problème de choix de l'opérateur à appliquer en fonction d'une variété d'informations que l'on va regrouper sous le nom de contexte (nature et caractéristiques de l'image, primitives à extraire, contraintes d'exploitation). Dans cette thèse, on propose une méthode générale pour la détection de contours vue comme un problème d'adaptation des opérateurs. L'adaptation est définie comme un problème de sélection d'un enchaînement d'opérateurs (prétraitement, détection de contours, post-traitement) approprié ainsi que le réglage des paramètres de ces opérateurs, en fonction du contexte de la segmentation. L'estimation des caractéristiques de l'image (comme le bruit, la texture, le contraste, le modèle des contours) et l'évaluation de la qualité du résultat jouent un rôle important dans le cadre de cette méthode. Plusieurs approches algorithmiques sont proposées, combinant différents types et techniques d'adaptation : adaptation a priori/a posteriori, adaptation globale/locale, adaptation heuristique/par optimisation. Ces différentes approches sont illustrées et validées d'une façon expérimentale sur des images artificielles et réelles. Une implantation multi-agents de la méthode est également proposée, en utilisant COALA, une plate-forme de développement des systèmes multi-agents. Deux architectures multi-agents sont présentées, pour implanter deux approches différentes de la méthode : une approche heuristique et une approche par optimisation

Ce systeme procede a la segmentation d'images en deux etapes: une etape de pre-segmentation qui consiste a faire une classification FCM suivi d'un etiquetage de l'image. Une autre etape de reajustement et comprenant deux phases: la premiere consiste a eliminer les fausses regions (PEFR) et la deuxieme consiste a reajuster les contours en reaffectant leurs pixels aux regions de l'image (PRPC).

Il est donc nécessaire de faire coopérer plusieurs processus de segmentation. Le travail réalisé dans cette thèse se divise en deux parties: 1) Développement d'une approche coopérative pour la segmentation d'images naturelles. Le principe consiste à utiliser la redondance entre les résultats obtenus par plusieurs segmentations «région» afin de localiser des germes qui ont une grande certitude d'appartenir à des régions homogènes. A partir de ces germes une procédure de croissance de régions basée sur les caractéristiques des germes permet d'agglomérer progressivement les pixels hors germes. Le processus est contrôlé par le gradient de l'image afin d'obtenir une meilleure précision sur les frontières des régions extraites. Les germes sont extraits par un mécanisme de fusion de plusieurs segmentations primaires. Ce mécanisme permet également de proposer une segmentation consensus entre les segmentations de départ. 2) Caractérisation quantitative du résultat de la segmentation: La mesure couramment utilisée est basée sur le pourcentage des pixels mal classés entre le résultat fourni par un algorithme de segmentation et une segmentation de référence. Cette mesure reste insuffisante car elle ignore toute information spatiale sur la localisation des frontières des régions. La nouvelle mesure proposée tient compte à la fois du nombre de pixels mal classés et de leurs localisations. Cette mesure de dissimilarité permet l'évaluation numérique du résultat d'un algorithme de segmentation sur des images où l'on connaît la segmentation de référence. De plus, elle permet d'étendre à l'espace des segmentations certaines techniques de filtrage développées dans le cas de signaux scalaires.

L'évolution des capteurs d'acquisition induit de nouvelles images de résolution élevée, contenant des objets hétérogènes. Il est aussi devenu courant d'obtenir des images d'une même scène à partir de plusieurs sources. Ceci rend difficile l'utilisation des méthodes de segmentation classiques. Les approches de segmentation hiérarchiques fournissent des solutions potentielles à ce problème. Ainsi, l'Arbre Binaire de Partitions (BPT) est une structure de données représentant le contenu d'une image à différentes échelles. Sa construction est généralement mono-critère (i.e. une image, une métrique) et fusionne progressivement des régions connexes similaires. Cependant, la métrique doit être définie a priori par l'utilisateur, et la gestion de plusieurs images se fait en regroupant de multiples informations issues de plusieurs bandes spectrales dans une seule métrique. Notre première contribution est une approche pour la construction multicritère d'un BPT. Elle établit un consensus entre plusieurs métriques, permettant d'obtenir un espace de segmentation hiérarchique unifiée. Par ailleurs, peu de travaux se sont intéressés à l'évaluation de ces structures hiérarchiques. Notre seconde contribution est une approche évaluant la qualité des BPTs en se basant sur l'analyse intrinsèque et extrinsèque, suivant des exemples issus de vérités-terrains. Nous discutons de l'utilité de cette approche pour l'évaluation d'un BPT donné mais aussi de la détermination de la combinaison de paramètres adéquats pour une application précise. Des expérimentations sur des images satellitaires mettent en évidence la pertinence de ces approches en segmentation d'images.

Cependant, ces approches restent tributaires de la première étape qui permet le passage du pixel vers l'objet, à savoir l'étape de construction. L'architecture séquentielle de ces approches fait que les erreurs de l'étape de construction se répercutent sur l'étape d'identification. Il devient donc primordial de passer de cette architecture séquentielle vers une architecture itérative permettant la collaboration entre les étapes de construction et d'identification. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous nous sommes concentrés sur l'étude de l'étape de construction(i.e., la segmentation) comme base de départ pour les approches proposées. Nous avons proposé deux approches objets basées sur les techniques de segmentation les plus propices à la collaboration, à savoir les techniques régions et les techniques collaboratives région/contour. La première approche proposée se base sur une croissance sémantique hiérarchique. Elle permet de combiner les algorithmes de croissance de régions et les approches d'analyse d'images orientées objets. La croissance étant spécifique à la classe du germe de départ, nous avons proposé deux adaptations de l'approche sur les objets les plus rencontrés dans le contexte urbain, à savoir, les routes et les bâtiments. La deuxième approche utilise un algorithme évolutionnaire local permettant un paramétrage local des différents agents régions et contours évoluant au sein d'un système multi-agents.

Après un état de l'art sur les différentes approches d'évaluation (supervisées ou non supervisées), différents critères sont comparés à partir de bases d'images synthétiques et réelles. De nouveaux critères d'évaluation non supervisée sont proposés en adoptant trois approches: la première consiste à définir un critère adaptatif sur le type des images, le second réalise une fusion de plusieurs critères par combinaison linéaire et le dernier un apprentissage de la comparaison. Ce dernier critère permet d'avoir un jugement similaire à une référence dans 85% des cas, améliorant ainsi le meilleur critère de la littérature de presque 20%.

Because of decreasing prices, superior hardware is now being used and image quality is better than ever. Many people now require image-synthesis techniques and software for their applicaions. Moreover, the techniques of computer ani mation have become very popular. In this book, we present a wide range of applications of computer graphics. This book is a collection of 44 papers in various areas of computer graphics selected from papers presented at Graphics Interface '85. Graphics Interface '85, held from May 27 to 31 in Montreal, was the first truly international computer graphics conference in Canada. This year, for the first time, the conference was presented jointly by the Com puter Graphics Society and the Canadian Man-Computer Communications Society. This new arrangement gave the conference international scope. The conference was spon sored by the Department of Communications in Ottawa, the Department of Science and Technology in Quebec, Supply and Services Canada, the Natural Sciences and Engineer ing Research Council of Canada, Hydro-Quebec, the "Association Canadienne Fran«aise pour I' Avancement des Sciences", and the Canadian Broadcasting Corpora tion. Graphics Interface '85 was organized by "1'Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales" of the University of Montreal. Over 100 papers were submitted to the conference , but 64 were selected by the inter national program committee for presentation. This book contains new expanded versions of the papers.
