It is the main force that drives the technology. With increased speed larger problems can be attempted. To gain speed, advanced processors and pro gramming languages offer, for instance, compound arithmetic operations like matmul and dotproduct. But there is another side to the computational coin - the accuracy and reliability of the computed result. Progress on this side is very important, if not essential. Compound arithmetic operations, for instance, should always deliver a correct result. The user should not be obliged to perform an error analysis every time a compound arithmetic operation, implemented by the hardware manufacturer or in the programming language, is employed. This treatise deals with computer arithmetic in a more general sense than usual. Advanced computer arithmetic extends the accuracy of the elementary floating-point operations, for instance, as defined by the IEEE arithmetic standard, to all operations in the usual product spaces of computation: the complex numbers, the real and complex intervals, and the real and complex vectors and matrices and their interval counterparts. The implementation of advanced computer arithmetic by fast hardware is examined in this book. Arithmetic units for its elementary components are described. It is shown that the requirements for speed and for reliability do not conflict with each other. Advanced computer arithmetic is superior to other arithmetic with respect to accuracy, costs, and speed.

War and combat were significant factors in the lives of all conditions of people during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; thousands of men, women and children prepared for, engaged in and suffered from the consequences of almost endemic armed conflict. However, while war and combat feature prominently in many of the forms of literature written at the time, the theme of warfare in some types of narrative source remains a relatively under-studied area. This book offers an investigation of the depiction of warfare in contemporary writings, in both fictional narratives and factual accounts, aiming to bridge the gap between the disciplines of literature and military history. Using both established sources and the latest research, the author examines how the application of what is now known about the practical and technological aspects of medieval warfare can aid us in our understanding of literature. She also demonstrates, via an investigation of a corpus of Old French chronicles, epics and romances, how the judicious study of sources that are not always considered reliable can, in turn, inform us about contemporary perceptions of, and attitudes towards, war and other forms of armed combat. Book excerpt: In 1910 Ernesto Schiaparelli, along with the Italian Archaeological Mission on behalf of the Regio Museo di Antichità Egizie, excavated the area where, during the Eleventh Dynasty, King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep erected a chapel to the goddess Hathor at the site of Gebelein. Some of the blocks belonging to this chapel had already been moved to the Cairo Museum during the nineteenth century, and finds during Schiaparelli’s campaign were taken to the Egyptian Museum at Turin. In this work, Elisa Fiore Marochetti presents documents from these two museums and gives an architectonic and decorative reconstitution of an unknown monument. The mostly unpublished blocks and fragments, presented here as the General Catalogue of the Turin Museum, follow a general introduction to the geographical, religious, and historical setting of Gebelein and of the chapel before Mentuhotep’s reunification of the land. The dating of the chapel is formulated on the basis of the iconographical style of the reliefs and of the titulary borne by Mentuhotep.
