Book Lateral Response of Piles in Saturated Cohesionless Soils

Download or read book Lateral Response of Piles in Saturated Cohesionless Soils written by Peter James Algie and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the lateral response of single piles embedded in saturated cohesionless soils on flat ground, with no crust layer. OpenSeesPL, a numerical modelling software programme, was used as the principal means of this investigation. Several 'rules of thumb' that could be used in pseudo-static methods were developed. Soil-pile interaction in saturated cohesionless soils is a changing and multi-variable problem, and therefore is not well understood. This is because the soil is prone to liquefaction when subject to dynamic loads. These variables include changing soil stiffness and damping, changing soil-pile-structure resonant frequency and changing loads. The response of piles subject to lateral static pushover loads was considered. OpenSeesPL and an elastic continuum pile analysis method proposed by Budhu and Davies (1987) can predict lateral pile response reasonably accurately. Initial soil stiffness equal to approximately 1/3 to 1/4 of the small strain moduli should be used. The friction angle in both analysis methods has to account for strain softening beyond peak resistance in dense sands. Pile response subject to lateral dynamic loads at the pile head was analysed. It was found that piles dynamically loaded at the pile head can lead to the adjacent soil liquefying, which reduces the soil stiffness and increases the strain dependent material damping. Nonlinear OpenSeesPL models and an inertial pseudo-static method along with the Budhu and Davies method for elastic soils with appropriate reductions in soil stiffness can be used to reasonably predict the response of piles dynamically excited at the pile head. The lateral response of piles subject to dynamic excitation of the underlying bedrock was investigated. Maximum ground surface accelerations and pile response in liquefiable soils was found to occur during an initial transient phase before the onset of full liquefaction. During this phase, the soil has a linear stiffness distribution with depth and the soil stiffness near the ground surface (i.e. at one pile diameter) is equal to approximately 20% of the initial stiffness at that depth. An elastic equivalent pseudo- static method for determining lateral pile response subject to kinematic and inertial interaction was developed.

Book Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading

Download or read book Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading written by Lymon C. Reese and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guiding the professional through the complexities of lateral-load design, this book and CD-ROM combination introduces the procedures involved in piles and pile group design. This is a problem that can only be solved by accounting for the soil resistance as related to the lateral deflection of the pile. Intricate equations are derived and fully explained, enabling the designer to find the critical loads, that will either cause a pile to be overloaded or cause too much lateral deflection. The CD-ROM contains simplified versions of two required programs that allow the reader to check the solutions of some of the examples given in the book and to find answers to related problems.

Book Next Generation of Bridge Columns for Accelerated Bridge Construction in High Seismic Zones

Download or read book Next Generation of Bridge Columns for Accelerated Bridge Construction in High Seismic Zones written by Mostafa Tazarv and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longitudinal bar debonding allowed spread of yielding and prevented premature failure of reinforcements in UHPC-filled duct connections and grouted coupler column pedestal. The SMA-reinforced ECC column showed superior seismic performance compared to a conventional column in which the plastic hinge damage was limited to only ECC cover spalling even under 12% drift ratio cycles. The column residual displacements were 79% lower than CIP residual displacements on average due to the superelastic NiTi SMA longitudinal reinforcement, and higher base shear capacity and higher displacement capacity were observed. The analytical modeling methods were simple and sufficiently accurate for general design and analyses of precast components proposed in the present study. The proposed symmetrical material model for reinforcing NiTi superelastic SMA was found to be a viable alternative to the more complex asymmetrical model.

Book Pile group Interaction Factors for Free headed Pile Groups

Download or read book Pile group Interaction Factors for Free headed Pile Groups written by Mauricio Ochoa and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to analyze foundations supported by groups of vertical, pin-headed, laterally loaded piles, it is necessary to include in some rational way the effect of pile-soil-pile interaction, or the increase in pile-head flexibility that occurs in each pile in a group in comparison with an isolated pile. A study was undertaken to measure experimentally pile-head flexibility reduction (interaction) factors in a full-scale pile group in sand. The measurements were accomplished by testing individual piles within a pile group of nine piles cyclically at varying magnitudes of applied ground line shear, two-pile subgroups and three-pile subgroups. The response of certain unloaded piles was also monitored during these individual-pile and small-group tests. Analysis of the results indicated a significant effect of position on flexibility reduction in a two-pile group (leading or trailing) for piles spaced 3 diameters on center and loaded in line and a lesser effect for piles loaded side-by-side. A consistent set of interaction factors was developed from the experiments and applied to the analysis of deflection and shear load distribution in the full nine-pile group, which had been tested earlier on the same test site, through the use of simple matrix techniques. Book Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits

Download or read book Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits written by Dipanjan Basu and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.
