Book excerpt: A budgeting handbook for academic administrators and faculty is presented. Economic and political influences on budgeting are considered, along with sources of funds for public and private colleges, and the chronology of the budget process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in Richmond in 1968, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) began with a mission to build a university to serve a city emerging from the era of urban crisis—desegregation, white flight, political conflict, and economic decline. With the merger of the Medical College of Virginia and the Richmond Professional Institute into the single state-mandated institution of VCU, the two entities were able to embrace their mission and work together productively. In Fulfilling the Promise, John Kneebone and Eugene Trani tell the intriguing story of VCU and the context in which the university was forged and eventually thrived. Although VCU’s history is necessarily unique, Kneebone and Trani show how the issues shaping it are common to many urban institutions, from engaging with two-party politics in Virginia and African American political leadership in Richmond, to fraught neighborhood relations, the complexities of providing public health care at an academic health center, and an increasingly diverse student body. As a result, Fulfilling the Promise offers far more than a stale institutional saga. Rather, this definitive history of one urban-setting state university illuminates the past and future of American public higher education in the post-1960s era.

Book Budgets and Budgeting for College and University Department Chairs

Download or read book Budgets and Budgeting for College and University Department Chairs written by Nathan Dickmeyer and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will assist a new department chair in understanding the terminology of budgeting and financial statements. This book explains practices and cycles that remain constant regardless of a university's particular budgeting methodology. This book will also, most importantly, explain much of the "why" of budgeting. It will certainly cover the "how" of budgeting, but not at the perfectly detailed level which is unique to each institution. This book begins with an overview of the university budget process, shifts to understanding and creating departmental budgets and moves to grant budgets. Then the book gives context to departmental budgets by situating them within university budgets and university financial statements. The book explains not only how to build departmental and grant budgets, but how to be successful with your budget requests and how to make an impact as you serve on a university budget or finance committee. Through the budget process a department chair brings resources to his or her department. A chair's ability to gather and control these resources depends on the chair's ability to maneuver within the budgeting system. While having popular majors, over-subscribed courses and brilliant faculty certainly contribute to departmental success, not all university systems are without perversity. Unless a chair knows his or her way through systems like budgeting, strong departmental attributes do not necessarily lead to financial reward. This book provides a roadmap through the budgeting system maze. A new department chair needs an insider's guide and, after a career of managing budgets and designing budgeting systems, I will open up and display these systems in order that you may successfully find your way to departmental prosperity.

Download or read book The Athletic Trap written by Howard L. Nixon II and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercial model of college sports entangles presidents, boards, and their institutions in a complex web of dysfunctional commitments. The unrivaled amount of cash poured into the college athletic system has made sports programs breeding grounds for corruption while diverting crucial resources from the academic mission of universities. Like money in Washington politics, the influence bought by a complex set of self-interested actors seriously undermines movement toward reform while trapping universities in a cycle of escalating competition. Longtime sport sociologist Howard L. Nixon II approaches the issue from the perspective of college presidents—how they are seduced by prestige or pressured by economics into building programs that move schools toward a commercial model of athletics. Nixon situates his analysis in the context of what he calls “the intercollegiate golden triangle,” a powerful social network of athletic, media, and private corporate commercial interests. This network lures presidents and other university leaders into an athletic arms race with promises of institutional enhancements, increased enrollments, better student morale, improved alumni loyalty, more financial contributions, and higher prestige. These promises can cloud the judgment of college presidents and governing boards, entangling them in an athletic trap that restricts their influence. Unable to control spending, inequalities, and deviance within commercialized athletic programs, universities are ensnared in financial, political, and social obligations that are difficult to sustain—or escape. Nixon clarifies the structure of this trap, describes how higher education institutions fall into it, and explores what it means for institutions and presidents caught in it. This timely analysis also has relevance to the debates about the role of the NCAA and ongoing reform efforts in college sports. The Athletic Trap will be of interest to university presidents, board members, and administrators, sport sociologists concerned with the balance of power between academics and athletics, and anyone else with a serious interest in college sports and its future.
