Book Understanding the Windsor Report

Download or read book Understanding the Windsor Report written by and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2003 was a tempestuous year in the Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church USA gave its canonical consent to the election of an openly gay priest, the Rev. V. Gene Robinson. In the Anglican Church of Canada, a Diocese authorized a liturgical rite for the blessing of same-sex unions. Responding to the outcry from many parts of the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury appointed a special commission to analyze the events and make recommendations for preserving unity amid disagreement. The commission's findings, published as The Windsor Report in October 2004 have generated as much controversy as the events that prompted them. But what does the report actually mean to the Episcopal Church? A comprehensive summary by Jan Nunley of the report and its aftermath puts those questions into context, while a conversational commentary organized around important themes by Douglas and Zahl, two very different voices, reflects on its recommendations and implications for the future of the church.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At an international level, Anglicanism has almost no mandating or juridical power. Stresses and threats of division over issues such as human sexuality have resulted in moves to enhance the Communion's central structures and instruments. However, it is becoming clear that there is little likelihood of substantial change in this direction succeeding, at least in the medium term. The challenge for Anglicanism is to make a "polity of persuasion" work more effectively. This volume seeks to identify some trends and shifts of emphasis in Anglican ecclesiology to serve that end. Jeffrey Driver argues that there is more at stake in such an exercise than Anglican unity. In an ever-shrinking, pluralist, and conflicted world, where oneness is often forced by dominance, the People of God are called to model something different. The injunction of Jesus, "it is not so among you," challenged his followers to use power and live in community in a way that contrasted with what occurred "among the Gentiles" (Mark 10:41-45). This is why the sometimes tedious debates about authority and structure in the Anglican Communion could actually matter--because they might have something to say about being human in community, about sharing power and coexisting, about living interdependently on a tiny and increasingly stressed planet. The Anglican experiment in dispersed authority, for all its grief, could be a powerful gift.

Book The Episcopal Church in Crisis

Download or read book The Episcopal Church in Crisis written by Frank G. Kirkpatrick and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current debate in the Episcopal Church in the United States (ECUSA) over its relationship with the worldwide Anglican Communion has been building for some time. Some Episcopalians (including priests, bishops, and dioceses) have broken or are considering breaking their historic affiliation with the current authoritative bodies of ECUSA because they believe they have betrayed the historic teachings and morality of the Anglican tradition. The author places this emerging crisis in context: historical, moral, theological, cultural, and ecclesiological. He explores how the rift between Episcopalians in the United States originated, how it is being played out now in the rift between the official representatives of ECUSA and the Anglican Communion, what the arguments are for and against all sides, and what are the prospects for either reconciliation at some level between the opposing parties or deepening schism in the future. Kirkpatrick explores the variety of contentious issues, rather than focusing just on the one that gets the most media attention: homosexuality. The crisis in the Church goes much deeper than that, however, and involves issues of church, tradition, and biblical authority. The author provides necessary background but focuses primarily on the events that have occurred since 2003 when ECUSA approved the election and consecration of an openly gay bishop. While the situation continues to evolve and change, the book provides readers with an up-to-date account of the history of the crisis, an analysis of the conflicting arguments, and a contextual guide for understanding what might come next in this unfolding story.

Book Anglicanism A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Anglicanism A Very Short Introduction written by Mark Chapman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-06-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Anglicanism? How is it different from other forms of Christianity, and how did it come to have so many different versions throughout the world? Although originally united by location and a common belief, Anglicanism has gradually lost its pre-eminence as the English state church due to increasing pluralisation and secularisation. While there are distinctive themes and emphases which emerge from its early history and theology, there is little sense of unity in Anglicanism today. In Anglicanism: A Very Short Introduction, Mark Chapman highlights the diversity of contemporary Anglicanism by exploring its fascinating history, theology, and structures. Putting the history and development of the religion into context, Chapman reveals what it is that holds Anglicanism together despite the recent crises that threaten to tear it apart. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Book I Have Called You Friends

Download or read book I Have Called You Friends written by Frank T. Griswold and published by Cowley Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his nine-year term as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Frank T. Griswold has taught about reconciliation: conversation, conversion, communion--all grounded in Jesus' meeting us in all our particularities and isolation and calling us into the ever greater friendship of the Holy Spirit. It seemed natural, then, that a book of essays in honor of the Presiding Bishop at the end of his term should take reconciliation as its theme. Each of the contributors-church leaders from all over the globe--focuses in his or her own way on reconciliation and our participation in what God has already accomplished through Christ. I Have Called You Friends is a proper and loving gift to man who has served as the overseer of the Episcopal Church, and as a teacher and a friend. But it is more than that. It is an enterprise in theological reflection on a vital topic for citizens of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: The classical Anglican understanding of a bishop is expressed in the Canons of the Church of England with the phrase ‘father in God’ – wording that remains unchanged by the decision to ordain women as bishops. This volume sets out the understanding of priestly and episcopal ministry from biblical, historical and theological viewpoints of the Catholic wing of the Anglican church. It sets out in a non-polemic way the rationale of those who defend a traditional view of priesthood as male while being fully a part of the Church of England. It incorporates elements of the landmark book Consecrated Women? and brings the discussion fully up to date in light of the General Synod’s decision to ordain women to the episcopate in 2014. Leading Anglo-Catholic figures explore the topic from a range of perspectives, including Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester; on living in love and charity with your neighbour; Jonathan Baker, the Bishop of Fulham, on consecrated women; Emma Forward, a member of General Synod, on feminism in a post-feminist age; Geoffrey Rowell, formerly Bishop of Europe, on mission, scripture, tradition and church unity; and Aidan Nicholls OP, a Dominican priest and academic, offers a Roman Catholic perspective.

Download or read book Beating the Bounds written by Sidney L. Green and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the form of the classical symphony as an analytical and critical tool, Sidney Green examines the concepts of orthodoxy and heresy and their historical development in the Christian church and applies those to the confessional approach of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON). Using examples from history of the early church, the Reformation, and the contemporary emerging church, Green examines how the concept of boundaries and the exercise of ecclesiastical authority have been applied. Contemporary attempts to respond to the postmodern paradigm producing a neo-dynamic view of orthodoxy, including radical ideas in the area of sexuality, are examined. Recognizing a dynamism in Anglican orthodoxy that is still very much alive alongside present attempts of conservative minorities to impose their view on the Communion--sometimes by very devious means--the distinctives of Anglican ecclesiology are discussed in the belief that ecclesiology is the outward expression of what theologically undergirds Anglican orthodoxy. Current attempts to bring harmony and stability in place of fracture and dissonance culminating in the suggestion of an Anglican Covenant are examined. Possible alternate ways forward are suggested centered on the primacy of love.
