Book The Employment Relationship

Download or read book The Employment Relationship written by Jacqueline A-M. Coyle-Shapiro and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2005 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last fifteen years, researchers have shown increasing interest in the exchange relationship between the employee and employer. Until now, the literatures examining the employment relationships have tended to operate either from the employer or the employee perspectives and have typically approached the topic from a single discipline be it psychology, sociology, human resource management, organizational behavior, industrial relations, law or economics. Failure to consider multiple perspectives has created a fragmented understanding of the employment relationship. This volume incorporates social exchange, economics, industrial relations, legal, and justice theory perspectives. In addition, chapters have been written by authors that reflect the full international body of research on the employment relationship and provide information about legislation, governance, and cultural differences across nations. The conceptual and empirical foundations for understanding theemployment relationship from these different theoretical perspectives facilitates the establishment of the convergent and discriminant validity of the psychological contract and the investments-contributions models of the employment relationship in relation to related exchange constructs such as perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange. The interdisciplinary and international nature of the employment relationship literature reviewed and integrated in this volume provides arichness that is rarely available in studies of the workplace, and many new and provocative ideas are presented in this volume. Bringing these perspectives together provides greater comprehensiveness, clarity, synthesis and understanding of the employment relationship. This volume is designed to promote the thinking of scholars in the employment relationship area. It will also have relevance to practitioners primarily through the implications of this multi-disciplinary perspective. The volume offers implications of a holistic, multi-disciplinary, international, conceptualization of the employment relationship for theory development, empirical research and measurement, and policy.

Book Reducing the Margin of Error

Download or read book Reducing the Margin of Error written by Neysa Hill and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: As state governments grapple with reconciling budgets, administrative changes, political upheaval and technological advancements public employees are confronted with years without raises, wavering objectives, heavy workloads, and the push for an increased cadre of skills. The researcher asks the question, what are the dynamics of psychological contract violations within the public sector? Psychological contracts have the potential to become an employee's assurance when the working environment seems tumultuous. Individuals utilize contracts to promulgate daily work endeavors and career aspirations. It is plausible that employees believe that their psychological contract can be a source of stability when there is organizational uncertainty. Through the use of qualitative methodology this research will interview public education and public law enforcement employees to uncover how public sector employees interpret and react to the occurrence of psychological contract violations.

Book Trust and Contracts

Download or read book Trust and Contracts written by Andrew Coulson and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about trust - in local government, in the health service, in military leaders, in politicians - between regulators and those they regulate. It starts from first principles, and is essential reading for students of the public sector who want to understand why 'best value' and 'relational contracting' are replacing pure private sector models such as compulsory competitive tendering. It also sets out to stimulate creative thought and aims to influence managers, not in the naive sense that they trust regardless, but as an incentive to examine their practice, and that of their organisations, to see how more trust might lead to more efficiency and to a greater involvement of ordinary citizens in the services they use. This ground-breaking collection focuses on key public service issues of continuing significance. Its concerns are highly relevant to the debates around the reshaping of the public sector and the meaning of the public services which have followed from the election of the Blair government. The main examples are drawn from local government, but the relevance of the lessons drawn from them is much broader for public sector management and an understanding of the ways in which the public sector is currently being shaped.

Book Managing the Psychological Contract

It is the deal you make with your employer and colleagues at work; it is about your mutual expectations and their fulfilment. Too often this contract is implicit and left to chance, resulting in misunderstanding, stress, lower commitment and performance. The author demonstrates how to use the psychological contract to raise the business game and increase personal fulfilment. Managing the Psychological Contract is the first book which shows how the psychological contract can be used in practice. In it Michael Wellin advocates going beyond the traditional static view of the psychological contract between the organisation and its employees. He shows how to create unique and dynamic customised Personal Deals between people and teams. He does this by showing how to make personal deals explicit and mutual, and provides practical tips for leaders, employees and HR professionals. Separate chapters are devoted to leadership, culture change and strategic HR management. There is also a chapter of practical ideas for individuals who want to change their personal deal at work. The author's ideas are based on his own research and consultancy experience as well as the latest business school research. The book has a number of case studies showing how different organisations use the psychological contract. This is an important and extremely readable book for all those concerned with the improved performance of people and organisations.

Book Generation and the Psychological Contract

Download or read book Generation and the Psychological Contract written by Melanie Hicks and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Civil Service reform has swept through all levels of government during the last decade. These reforms call for greater managerial flexibility at the expense of civil servant employment security and tenure. This work examines the effects of these reforms on the psychological contract of various generations working in Florida's state government. The psychological contract can be defined as an exchange agreement of promises and contributions between two parties, the employee and employer, and includes an individual's beliefs regarding mutual obligations (Rousseau, 1990, 1995). Psychological contract theory is believed by many to be the most accurate explanation of the varied, albeit primarily negative, reactions of employees to job insecurity (King, 2000). The psychological contract becomes an important and appropriate framework to study employee perceptions of civil service reforms.
