Download or read book The Patella written by Giles R. Scuderi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-02-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of the patellofemoral joint remain a challenge to the orthopaedic surgeon. In spite of many articles in scientific journals, an outstanding monograph, and several excellent textbook chapters, the patella is still an enigma in many respects. The etiology of patellar pain is controversial, and there is no completely satisfying explanation for its cause or its relationship to chondromalacia. Curiously, neither the widespread use of arthroscopy nor the advent of newer diagnostic tests such as CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging have cast much light. Without a better understanding of why patellar disorders occur it is not surprising that there is no consensus on how to fix them. Arthros copy has contributed little except to the patient's psyche. The currently most popular surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation of the patella was first described 50 years ago. One concrete advance, albeit a small one, is a better understanding of the role of anatomical abnormalities and patellofemoral dysplasia in patellar instabilities. It gives me great pleasure that many of the contributors are, like Dr.

Book Reconstruction of the Knee Joint

Download or read book Reconstruction of the Knee Joint written by S. Niwa and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 20 years have passed since the International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement was held in London in 1974. Prosthetic design and operative technique have been greatly improved since then, and there is now an accepted standard concept of total knee arthroplasty. Thirteen years after the London symposium, another international symposium on total knee replacement was held, this time in Nagoya, Japan, in 1987. Its ambitious objective was to push forward the frontiers of continuous investigation and improve ment of total knee replacement. The fruits of the individual efforts presented at the Nagoya symposium were published in a volume of proceedings entitled Total Knee Replacement. In the years since 1987, further investigations have been conducted in various parts of the world regarding prosthetic design, fixation, long-term radiological follow-up, biomechanical evaluation, and biomaterials research. In knee ligament reconstruc tion, rapid progress has been made in the past five years in clinical practice and fundamental research by means of arthroscopic surgery and tissue transplantation, and we have come close to establishing a standard treatment. Under these circumstances, an international symposium on knee joint reconstruc tion was planned for 1994, again to be held in Nagoya, to provide ample opportunity for exchanging information and sharing clinical experience from around the world.

Download or read book Patellofemoral Disorders written by Roland M. Biedert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patellofemoral complaints are a major problem for all those working in sports medicine and orthopaedics. The correct diagnosis at an early stage is essential if subsequent treatment is to be successful and secondary complications are to be avoided. Written by an internationally known team of experts this book looks at the various diagnostic techniques currently available, cites examples of unsuccessful treatments and proposes the most appropriate ones on the proven basis of the latest research. The core of the book is the 20 case studies ranging from simple non-operative treatment to multi-operated patients with salvage procedures. The underlying theme of the book is that treatment of patellofemoral problems must, in the first instance, be somewhat conservative. Surgical interventions should be performed in a response to a clear underlying pathology and only after non-operative treatment has failed. Patellofemoral Disorders is enhanced by the inclusion of some superb specially drawn illustrations and numerous colour photographs in the case studies section.

Book Recent Advances in Arthroplasty

Download or read book Recent Advances in Arthroplasty written by Samo Fokter and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book was to offer an overview of recent insights into the current state of arthroplasty. The tremendous long term success of Sir Charnley's total hip arthroplasty has encouraged many researchers to treat pain, improve function and create solutions for higher quality of life. Indeed and as described in a special chapter of this book, arthroplasty is an emerging field in the joints of upper extremity and spine. However, there are inborn complications in any foreign design brought to the human body. First, in the chapter on infections we endeavor to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date analysis and description of the management of this difficult problem. Second, the immune system is faced with a strange material coming in huge amounts of micro-particles from the tribology code. Therefore, great attention to the problem of aseptic loosening has been addressed in special chapters on loosening and on materials currently available for arthroplasty.
