Book Understanding the Experience of Being a Peer Advisor in the Freshman Interest Groups Program at the University of Missouri

Download or read book Understanding the Experience of Being a Peer Advisor in the Freshman Interest Groups Program at the University of Missouri written by Jeffrey A. Wiese and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freshman Interest Groups (FIGs) program at the University of Missouri is a first-year experience program where groups of approximately 20 students live together in a residence hall and are co-enrolled in four courses. By combining residential and academic initiatives the program helps approximately 2,000 first-year students transition from high school to the university each year. The FIGs program employs more than 100 undergraduate Peer Advisors (PAs) to assist students in this transition. The PA position is unique in higher education because it combines responsibilities similar to traditional resident assistants along with the responsibility of teaching a university course for college credit. Adding to the complexity of this position is that the students with whom the PAs live are also their students in the classroom. While previous studies have looked at the impact similar transition programs have had on participants, few look at the impact these programs have on the student staff who work in them. Additionally, no study has been found that explores the combined experience of working as both a resident assistant and an undergraduate teaching assistant with the same group of students. In this phenomenological study, I interviewed 15 PAs and asked them to share their experience of working in the position. Through analysis of interview transcripts four themes about the PA experience emerged: managing multiple relationships, setting priorities and making sacrifices, challenges engaging residents, and the PAs’ reflection of the outcomes of their experience. This study concludes that the overall essence of being a PA is about balance: balancing relationships, roles, and responsibilities. The way the PAs handle the balance of these areas provides insight into their experience that may be useful in understanding other student leadership positions which involve overlapping roles and responsibilities.

Book Reframing Retention Strategy for Institutional Improvement

Download or read book Reframing Retention Strategy for Institutional Improvement written by David H. Kalsbeek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take an in-depth look at the difficulty in gaining traction at the institutional level in improving student retention and degree completion rates—especially at larger four year institutions where size, complexity, and multiplicity of structures and processes present particular challenges. This volume offers a way for institutional leaders to better focus their time, energy, and resources in their retention effort by framing the way they think about it using the 4 Ps of retention strategy: profile, progress, process, and promise. This simple framework challenges long-standing, traditional assumptions about student retention that can distract and dilute institutional efforts, and helps keep those efforts sharply and singularly focused on improving retention and degree completion outcomes. This is the 161st volume of this Jossey-Bass series. Addressed to higher education decision makers on all kinds of campuses, New Directions for Higher Education provides timely information and authoritative advice about major issues and administrative problems confronting every institution.

Book On Becoming a Productive University

Download or read book On Becoming a Productive University written by James E. Groccia and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2005-03-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1987, the U.S. Congress established the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program to raise awareness about the importance of quality and performance excellence as a competitive edge. Since 1999, the program has outlined criteria for educational institutions to align their mission, values, goals, processes, and resources into a comprehensive, long-term, systematic improvement effort. The book profiles six unique institutions that have successfully implemented these criteria: the Montfort College of Business at the University of Northern Colorado, National University, New Mexico State University-Carlsbad, Northwest Missouri State University, University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Western Wisconsin Technical College. The University of Wisconsin-Stout was the first higher education institution to win the Baldrige Award in 2001, and has since worked with educational institutions in 39 states and 25 countries that are interested in implementing quality improvement through the application of the Baldrige criteria. This book will appeal to academic administrators at all levels and at all types of institutions who are interested in applying a systematic approach to leadership, quality improvement, and change management within their institutions"--Unedited summary from book cover.
