Book Understanding the English Prepositions and Conjunctions

Download or read book Understanding the English Prepositions and Conjunctions written by Umilla Persad Lall and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2011-08-29 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absence of an efficient guide to the prepositions and conjunctions in English, certainly a drawback in the learning process, has led me to dedicate hundreds of hours to this project. This work is above all, a reference book, meant for both foreign and native students and teachers who must understand how the English prepositions and conjunctions work so they can adopt an efficient learning and teaching method from the start. It must be remembered that students will never learn to construct a sentence correctly unless they know what to do with the prepositions or the conjunctions. This book is not a novel to be read and put away. Only through repetition and constant reading and even memorization of idiomatic expressions, formulas and verbs followed by their prepositions, would you succeed in understanding both these parts of speech. A native speaker of any language considers this topic irrelevant. However, you as a foreign student must understand how the English prepositions or conjunctions work and thus, avoid translating word for word. If you choose this easy and effortless way out, the result will almost always be frustration and disappointment. Aware of your difficulties after twenty-five years of teaching English to Spanish speaking students in Spain, I have made a unique effort to explain to you, my way of getting across to my students that there is no secret or difficulty in the understanding of these two parts of speech in English. This tool will serve as your teacher who will always be there to assist you when you need help.

Book Connectives of English Speech

Download or read book Connectives of English Speech written by James Champlin Fernald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Connectives of English Speech: The Correct Usage of Prepositions, Conjunctions, Relative Pronouns and Adverbs Explained and Illustrated Such an example shows the great importance Of prepositions and other connectives as the means of binding words into sentences. Without such helps all speech would be made up of brief, isolated, and frag mentary statements. The movement Of thought would be constantly and abruptly broken. Much would need to be guessed at; much would, after all, be doubtful or obscure; while the mental difficulty involved in following such statements would render them practically valueless. For easy, effective, and pleasant reading or hearing, the mind needs to have the connections Of thought clearly indicated from point to point. The path of discourse may be steep, winding, or even intricate, but should always clearly show enough of forward reach to leave the traveler in no doubt where to set his foot. Prepositions, con junctions, relative pronouns and adverbs are the ever-recurring finger-boards that point the thought onward, or enable it on occasion to retrace its way. Book Participial Prepositions and Conjunctions in the History of English

Download or read book Participial Prepositions and Conjunctions in the History of English written by Michael Skiba and published by utzverlag GmbH. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participial prepositions and conjunctions such as considering, during, considered and except are a comparatively recent phenomenon in the history of the English language. They originated in the intense language contact situation between Anglo-French and Middle English in late medieval England. In this book, it is shown that the development is part of a long process of typological change both in the Romance languages and in the English language. Through language contact a productive pattern has been established in English, which still produces new participial prepositions today (e.g. following, based on and looking at). Participial prepositions and conjunctions therefore clearly illustrate the mechanisms and consequences of language change through intense language contact.
