Book Coastal Cultures

Download or read book Coastal Cultures written by Rob van Ginkel and published by Het Spinhuis. This book was released on 2007 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Europe, fishermen have often been portrayed as a ruggedly independent and freedom-loving lot, "a race apart" working relentlessly in perilous pursuit of prey to eke out a parsimonious livelihood. For this reason, fisher folk have often been romanticized in a rather heroic fashion in novels, poetry, pictorial arts, and popular and scholarly writing as a kind of "noble savages" at home. But, both the positive and the negative views were stereotypical and based on exoticism. The imagery of fishermen as folk heroes has changed dramatically over the past few decades. They are currently under increasing scrutiny from environmentalists and public opinion for allegedly being unruly marauders of marine living resources. This volume of essays throws light on cultural dimensions of fishing and whaling in Europe and the United States. Rob van Ginkel is an anthropologist and is affiliated with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

Book Exploring The History of Local Fishermen

Download or read book Exploring The History of Local Fishermen written by Joshua Glen and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishing has been an essential occupation for many coastal communities around the world for centuries, providing a source of sustenance and livelihood. The history of local fishermen is a fascinating subject, as it involves the interplay of geography, culture, and technology over time. In many coastal communities, fishing has been a way of life for generations. The methods and techniques used for catching fish have evolved over time, with new technology and innovations constantly being introduced. In some places, traditional methods such as net fishing and hand-line fishing are still used, while in others, modern techniques such as trawling and longlining have become more common. The history of local fishermen is often closely tied to the geography and natural resources of the area. For example, in areas with abundant fish populations, such as the coast of Japan or Norway, fishing has played a vital role in the local economy and culture for centuries. In other areas, such as the coast of West Africa, fishing has been a means of survival for coastal communities in the face of harsh environmental conditions and political instability. The history of local fishermen also reflects the social and cultural context of the communities they are a part of. In many places, fishing has been a male-dominated profession, with skills and knowledge passed down from father to son. However, there are also many examples of women who have played important roles in the fishing industry, either as fisherwomen or as traders and processors of fish. Over time, the fishing industry has become increasingly commercialized and globalized, with fish and seafood being traded around the world. This has had both positive and negative impacts on local fishermen, as it has opened up new markets and opportunities, but has also led to overfishing and environmental degradation in some areas. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable fishing practices, as well as the need to support local fishing communities. Initiatives such as community-supported fisheries and seafood certification programs have emerged to promote sustainable fishing practices and to ensure that fishermen receive fair prices for their catch. In conclusion, the history of local fishermen is a rich and complex subject that touches on many aspects of human society and culture. From the methods and techniques used for catching fish to the social and cultural context of fishing communities, the history of local fishermen offers insights into the ways in which people have interacted with their natural environment over time. As the fishing industry continues to evolve and face new challenges, understanding this history will be crucial for ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for both fishermen and the marine ecosystem.

Download or read book Socio Economic and Educational Aspects of Fishermen Community written by Appalaraju Majji and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India today is the second largest producer of fish in the world after China. The fisheries sector has been growing at 6 per cent over the past five years. Apart from being a major foreign exchange earner, fisheries is the source of livelihood for over 14 million people. In the era of globalization, quality criteria need to be met through sustainable and eco-friendly ways avoiding use of antibiotics and chemicals. There is an urgent need to raise well trained human resources on sanitary measures, hazard analysis and eco-friendly farming. In Andhra Pradesh, the socio-economic and educational conditions have not improved as expected. This Book explains the livelihood, socio-economic and educational aspects, role of middlemen and moneylenders, acute shortage of effective and remunerative employment and their problems and perspectives.I trust this book useful for students, teachers, researchers, administrators and policy makers to understand the cultures of small scale fishing communities. Authentic references have been quoted wherever necessary. Any suggestions, comments, and constructive criticisms from the readers for improvement of the book, will be gratefully acknowledged.

Book Researching People and the Sea

Download or read book Researching People and the Sea written by Madeleine Gustavsson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique edited collection, social scientists reflect upon and openly share insights gathered from researching people and the sea. Understanding how people use, relate to and interact with coastal and marine environments has never been more important, with social scientists having an increasingly vital contribution to make. Yet practical experiences in deploying social science approaches in this field are typically hidden away in field notes and unpublished doctoral manuscripts, with the opportunity for shared learning that comes from doing research often missed. There is a need for reflection on how social science knowledge is produced. This collection presents experiences from the field, its necessary reflexivity and innovation in methods, and the challenges and opportunities of translating across disciplines and policy. It brings to light the tacit expertise needed to study people and the sea and offers lessons which readers could employ in their own research. With a focus on the future direction of marine social sciences, the volume is highly relevant to masters and doctoral students and more experienced researchers engaged in studying people and the sea, as well as policy makers, practitioners and scientists wishing to understand the social dimension of marine and coastal environments. Chapters 2 and 3 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Book Ecosystem Based Management for the Oceans

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Management for the Oceans written by Karen McLeod and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional management approaches cannot meet the challenges faced by ocean and coastal ecosystems today. Consequently, national and international bodies have called for a shift toward more comprehensive ecosystem-based marine management. Synthesizing a vast amount of current knowledge, Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans is a comprehensive guide to utilizing this promising new approach. At its core, ecosystem-based management (EBM) is about acknowledging connections. Instead of focusing on the impacts of single activities on the delivery of individual ecosystem services, EBM focuses on the array of services that we receive from marine systems, the interactive and cumulative effects of multiple human activities on these coupled ecological and social systems, and the importance of working towards common goals across sectors. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans provides a conceptual framework for students and professionals who want to understand and utilize this powerful approach. And it employs case studies that draw on the experiences of EBM practitioners to demonstrate how EBM principles can be applied to real-world problems. The book emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that contribute to social and ecological resilience —the extent to which a system can maintain its structure, function, and identity in the face of disturbance. Utilizing the resilience framework, professionals can better predict how systems will respond to a variety of disturbances, as well as to a range of management alternatives. Ecosystem-Based Management for the Oceans presents the latest science of resilience, while it provides tools for the design and implementation of responsive EBM solutions.

Book Fishing Mobility and Settlerhood

Download or read book Fishing Mobility and Settlerhood written by Rapti Siriwardane-de Zoysa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-sited island ethnography illustrates how the embattled politics of (im)mobility, belonging, and patronage among coastal fishing communities in Sri Lanka ́s militarised northeast have intersected in the wake of civil war. It explores an undertheorized puzzle by asking how the conceptual dualisms between co-operation and contestation simplify the complex lifeworlds of small-scale fishing communities that are often imagined by scholars through allegories of rivalry and resource competition. Drawing on ordinary interpretations and lived practices implicated in the vernacular term sambandam (bearing multiple meanings of intimacy and entanglement), the book traces how intergroup co-operation is both affectively routinised and tactically instrumentalised across coastlines, and at sea. Given its distinct focus on translocal and ethno-religiously plural collectives, the study maps recent historic formations of diverse practices and their contentions, from networked ‘piracy’ and dynamite fishing, to collective rescue missions and coalitional lobbying. Moreover this work serves as an open invitation to academics, policymakers and activists for re-imagining multiple modes of ethical being and doing, and of everyday sociality among so-called ‘deeply divided’ societies. A rich ethnography that pays meticulous attention to a complex social fabric made up of locals, settlers and migrants, with multiple linguistic and religious affiliations, sometimes contending fishing practices, and migration and livelihoods patterns as they have been affected by tsunami, war and the aftermaths of both. It draws from and speaks to a range of disciplines – from political science and sociology, to critical geography and cultural studies, and contributes to diverse fields of inquiry, including conflict and its relationship to a “cold” peace; coastal/maritime livelihoods; identity, cooperation, and collective action. - Aparna Sundar, Assistant Professor of Politics, Ryerson University By unveiling the vast heterogeneity of fisher migrants and settlers, the book demonstrates in an excellent way how research should not merely focus on the articulations of identity, but more so the inherent properties and qualities of the diverse interdependencies they come to sustain. - Conrad Schetter, Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Bonn

Book Linking Social and Ecological Systems

Download or read book Linking Social and Ecological Systems written by Fikret Berkes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is usually the case that scientists examine either ecological systems or social systems, yet the need for an interdisciplinary approach to the problems of environmental management and sustainable development is becoming increasingly obvious. Developed under the auspices of the Beijer Institute in Stockholm, this new book analyses social and ecological linkages in selected ecosystems using an international and interdisciplinary case study approach. The chapters provide detailed information on a variety of management practices for dealing with environmental change. Taken as a whole, the book will contribute to the greater understanding of essential social responses to changes in ecosystems, including the generation, accumulation and transmission of ecological knowledge, structure and dynamics of institutions, and the cultural values underlying these responses. A set of new (or rediscovered) principles for sustainable ecosystem management is also presented. Linking Social and Ecological Systems will be of value to natural and social scientists interested in sustainability.
