Book Analyzing Problems in Schools and School Systems

Download or read book Analyzing Problems in Schools and School Systems written by Alan K. Gaynor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many textbooks in the field of educational administration describing various organizational theories, this text is unique in tying organizational theory explicitly and systematically to a well-formulated problem- analysis methodology. It provides particular examples of bureaucratic, political, and leadership theories as well as descriptions of two broader theoretical frameworks: Burrell and Morgan's conceptual matrix and systems thinking. Special features include: * a fully developed methodology for describing and documenting problems in schools; * a systematic method for using different theoretical perspectives to analyze the causes of problems in schools; * carefully formulated questions illustrating how different theoretical frameworks lead policy analysts to look at problems differently and to focus on different types and sources of information concerning their possible causes; * substantial sample papers illustrating the methodology; and * a range of illustrative organizational theories, amply described and succinctly grounded intellectually. This book is directed toward students in organizational theory and problem analysis classes and their professors, as well as to school administrators seeking to examine their problems and policies from perspectives that go beyond personal experience.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to extend work undertaken in a previous study (Understanding School System Administration) by broadening its focus to examine the organizational and larger environmental context in which chief education officers (CEOs) work. Specifically, the research had 4 objectives which were pursued through answers to 15 related questions. These objectives were: to deepen the understanding of the nature and causes of what CEOs do; to describe the nature of selected influences outside the local school system, and probable future changes in such influences; to examine the relationship between CEO practices and selected components of the school system; and to identify implications for future systems administration. The project was undertaken as a series of 8 sub-studies by individuals and small teams of principal investigators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we systemically improve the quality of classroom instruction and the learning and achievement of students? In an era when isolated examples of excellence are not good enough, we need systems that support improvement and excellence for all. This book describes how systems can effectively engage in this complex, challenging, and crucial work. The authors explore three core competencies of high-performing school systems: (1) understanding what the work is—a deep understanding of the core business of facilitating learning, a vision of what that looks like, and an awareness of where the system is in relation to that vision; (2) knowing how to do the work—a theory of action for improving instruction, a focus on key strategies, and effective alignment of resources; and (3) building the individual and organizational “habits of mind” that foster continuous improvement. Each chapter includes examples that illustrate key concepts in action, questions to spur self-assessment in key areas of competence, and tools and resources for building capacity at different levels and stages of development.
