Book Framing the Interpreter

Download or read book Framing the Interpreter written by Anxo Fernandez-Ocampo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situations of conflict offer special insights into the history of the interpreter figure, and specifically the part played in that history by photographic representations of interpreters. This book analyses photo postcards, snapshots and press photos from several historical periods of conflict, associated with different photographic technologies and habits of image consumption: the colonial period, the First and Second World War, and the Cold War. The book’s methodological approach to the "framing" of the interpreter uses tools taken primarily from visual anthropology, sociology and visual syntax to analyse the imagery of the modern era of interpreting. By means of these interpretative frames, the contributions suggest that each culture, subculture or social group constructed its own representation of the interpreter figure through photography. The volume breaks new ground for image-based research in translation studies by examining photographic representations that reveal the interpreter as a socially constructed category. It locates the interpreter’s mediating efforts at the core of the human sciences. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in translation and interpreting studies, as well as to those working in visual studies, photography, anthropology and military/conflict studies.

Book excerpt: Many people, from the beginning at today, have talked about Photography. Everyone telling a different story in a very personal way. So Baudelaire talked against Photography because he thought it wasn't and would never be an Art. Someone thought otherwise. Avedon said that if he didn't do every day something related to photography, it was just like if he had forgotten to wake up. I started collecting quotes about Photography almost 10 years ago. I'm sure I can learn so much, about people and photography, if I can understand the mood and feelings of people when they discover and approach to Photography. There is something very deep and emotional about photography and one can choose to love or hate it but not ignore it. In this book I've selected over 400 quotes from famous people somehow related to photography. Famous people that had something to say... About Photography.

Book Lives of the Great Photographers

Download or read book Lives of the Great Photographers written by Juliet Hacking and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important contribution to the history of photography that approaches the biographies and creations of thirty-eight great photographers from a new angle In the history of photography, the lives of the major personalities behind the lens are often as captivating as the images they have left behind. Yet, while certain photographs have become world famous, indelibly printed on the cultural consciousness, the stories of the photographers have been all too often distorted, obfuscated, or overlooked, and their social and political environments misunderstood or forgotten. Lives of the Great Photographers brings together the engaging and entertaining biographies of thirty-eight pioneers in the field, selected, carefully researched, and narrated by respected photography expert Juliet Hacking. The entries evoke the lives and backgrounds of these landmark figures, bringing new light to their work and forging a better understanding of how they pioneered new techniques and approaches. The text is accompanied by a beautifully curated sampling of images, including many rarely seen portraits and self-portraits. With entries on Margaret Bourke-White, Brassai, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Eadweard Muybridge, Edward Steichen, and many others, Lives of the Great Photographers captures from a new angle the contributions of some of the most masterful image-makers in history.
