Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was, first, to provide a portrait of first-year students' perceptions of the university climate at two Chilean universities located in Santiago Metropolitan area; and, second, to examine the relationship between these perceptions and students' plans to enroll at their institutions for a second year of studies. As little to none research on students' perceptions of the university climate in Chile has been conducted, this study presents an effort to start filling that gap in the Chilean higher education research. This work builds upon Hurtado et al.'s (2012) Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE), which is a multidimensional and multicontextual approach to analyzing college climate. Additionally, this research endeavor includes the adaptation, translation, and administration of the Diverse Learning Environments (DLE) survey assessment instrument based on the MMDLE framework. The survey was administered to first-year students at two Chilean universities, and it provides new data about students' perceptions of college climate in Chile. This study offers new insights into the relationship of first-year students' perceptions of university climate and first-to-second-year persistence in the Chilean context. Further, since the DLE measures were disaggregated by social identity groups, this study also offers a portrait of how students perceive university climate during their first year of studies depending on their sex and LGBTQ, indigenous, and social class identities.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study examined the factors influencing international undergraduate student persistence in a large private university in Pennsylvania. A report from the Association of International Educators (NAFSA, 2019) stated that international students contributed more than $41 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 458,000 jobs in the U.S. during the 2018-2019 academic year. Although research on unique populations has emerged to provide more relevant persistence analysis for each group, research on international students is insufficient and incomplete. The present study addressed this gap by examining how persistence theory applies and can be extended to the international student population. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a statistically significant relationship between the factors measured by the College Persistence Questionnaire Version 3 (CPQ-V3, Davidson, Beck, & Grisaffe, 2015) and actual persistence for international undergraduate students. Tinto's (1993) Integration Theory and Bean and Eaton's (2001) Psychological Model were employed as frameworks to assess and understand the topic. A sample of international undergraduate students from a private university in Pennsylvania was accessed (N = 72). A logistic regression was performed on the data acquired. The results of the analysis detennined that there was not a statistically significant relationship between the predictor variables (measured by CPQ-V3) and the criterion variable, persistence, operationalized as continued enrollment from one academic semester to the next. Some suggestions were made for future research.

Book excerpt: This thesis explored how men of color described their perceptions of the campus climate, their feelings of belonging at California State University, Stanislaus and how these factors influenced their college persistence. This study was part of a larger study in collaboration with California State University, Stanislaus that utilized a mixed method design. There were a total of 886 students who responded to the survey and 92 of them identified as a man of color. The qualitative aspect of this study included four students who identified as men of color. The research found that men of color had a positive view of the campus climate and had a strong sense of belonging to California State University, Stanislaus. The research also found that men of color at California State University, Stanislaus had a strong commitment to earning a degree at California State University, Stanislaus. This research indicated a need for faculty to have close connections with men of color and the importance of men of color being involved on campus. This research also indicated a need to examine policies around faculty and student collaboration. This research showed a need for future research to consider a longitudinal study that could follow the participants through their college careers as well as adding more depth to the qualitative aspect of this study in terms of including more participants from different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Researchers have examined factors that affect persistence for traditional-aged students with research focusing on quantitative studies that fail to acknowledge the individual experiences of persistence. Likewise, there is minimal research on Latino/a adult students and their experiences with persistence at community colleges. This dissertation study examined the Latino/a adult student at the community college to gain a better understanding of their lived experiences of persistence. This study took place at an urban, two-year institution in south Texas that has a high number of Hispanic or Latino/a students and a low number of adult students. For this study, I examined the following overarching research question: Looking through the lens of Latino/a adult students, what explains the phenomenon of their persistence at the community college? This study utilized a phenomenological, qualitative approach to explore the overarching question. The study followed a phenomenological methodology in order to focus on the lived experiences of the participants and to further explore the phenomenon of persistence. Two semi-structured interviews and a critical incident reflection were used to gather data from the participants. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were the following: the past will not define my future, moving into higher education, finding my place in higher education, aiming for a better life, what matters to me, making connections, and looking into a mirror. Sub-themes were identified for each of these themes as well, and study findings were interpreted in light of existing research literature and the study's conceptual framework encompassing Schlossberg's Transition Theory (1981) and Yosso's theory of Community Cultural Wealth (2005). The study adds to the body of literature on Latino/a adult students and their persistence and also provides implications for practice for practitioners in the field of higher education.

Book excerpt: Prior work has shown that there is a significant amount of turnover amongst the African poor as households exit and enter poverty. Some of this mobility can be attributed to regular movement back and forth in response to exogenous variability in climate, prices, health, etc. ('churning'). Other crossings of the poverty line reflect permanent shifts in long-term well-being associated with gains or losses of productive assets or permanent changes in asset productivity due, for example, to adoption of improved technologies or access to new, higher-value markets. Distinguishing true structural mobility from simple churning is important because it clarifies the factors that facilitate such important structural change. Conversely, it also helps identify the constraints that may leave other households caught in a trap of persistent, structural poverty. The papers in this book help to distinguish the types of poverty and to deepen understanding of the structural features and constraints that create poverty traps. Such an understanding allows communities, local governments and donors to take proactive, effective steps to combat persistent poverty in Africa. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Studies.

Book excerpt: Community college students are often excluded from persistence studies due to the unique characteristics of community colleges and its students. Recent studies have heavily relied on retention models that do not adequately account for the role individual and campus culture plays in students’ persistence decisions. Using Museus’ (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) model, this cross-sectional, correlational study examined the impact of campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging on the persistence decisions of students at a rural community college in the southeastern part of the U.S. Correlation analyses were conducted to investigate the relationships between two independent variables, campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging, and one dependent variable, students’ persistence decisions. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if differences in campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging existed between racial and gender identity groups. Lastly, a t-test was conducted to examine differences between residential and commuter students. Utilizing the CECE Survey for Community Colleges (Museus et al., 2017), a total of 234 responses were analyzed. The results revealed that students are more likely to persist when they have a positive perception of the campus environment. It also revealed that students were more likely to persist when they possessed a strong sense of belonging. Upon examining differences of campus environment perceptions, the results showed that gender identity influenced campus environment perceptions and race influenced sense of belonging among students. There was insufficient evidence to establish differences of campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging among residential and commuter students. Limitations regarding this study included its generalizability due to the low number of survey responses and the physical aspect of campus environment and campus culture. Recommendations for policymakers and practitioners include consideration for community memberships, increase campus support for underrepresented groups, and cultural competency for training. Recommendations for future research include the use of different theoretical frameworks to understand student persistence, continued studies involving community colleges, inclusive campus environment perceptions and sense of belonging studies, and qualitative studies on campus environment perceptions and sense of belong of community college students.
