Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WHAT'S MARFAN SYNDROME? Marfan syndrome (also referred to as Marfan's syndrome or Marfan's syndrome) is a situation that affects your connective tissue. Connective tissue holds your body collectively and gives support to many structures all through your frame. In Marfan syndrome, the connective tissue isn't ordinary. As a result, several frame structures are affected, including your coronary heart and blood vessels, bones, tendons, cartilage, eyes, pores and skin, and lungs. WHO DOES MARFAN SYNDROME HAVE AN EFFECT ON? Marfan syndrome is, within reason, not unusual, affecting 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 people. It's been found among people of all races and ethnic backgrounds. WHAT CAUSES MARFAN SYNDROME? When you have Marfan syndrome, there's an illness inside the gene that encodes the shape of fibrillin and the elastic fibers, a primary issue in connective tissue. This gene is called fibrillin-1, or FBN1. In most cases, Marfan syndrome is inherited. The pattern is referred to as "autosomal dominant," which means it occurs equally in women and men and can be inherited from just one person with Marfan syndrome. People who have Marfan syndrome have a 50% chance of passing the sickness on to their kids. In 25% of cases, a new genetic illness occurs due to an unknown motive. Marfan syndrome is also called a "variable expression" genetic sickness because not all and sundry with Marfan syndrome have the same signs and symptoms, and the signs and symptoms can be worse in a few humans than others. Marfan syndrome is present at the beginning. But you could not be diagnosed until you were a teen or younger adult. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF MARFAN SYNDROME? Once in a while, Marfan syndrome is so moderate that few, if any, signs are substantial right away. In most instances, signs end up being obtrusive as changes in connective tissue take place as you age. Because Marfan syndrome impacts your connective tissue, it is able to have an effect on your entire body, such as your skeletal device, coronary heart and blood vessels, eyes, pores, skin, and organs.

Book Ehlers Danlos Syndrome A Multidisciplinary Approach

Download or read book Ehlers Danlos Syndrome A Multidisciplinary Approach written by J.W.G. Jacobs and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generalized hypermobility has been known since ancient times, and a clinical description of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is said to have first been recorded by Hippocrates in 400 BC. Hypermobility syndromes occur frequently, but the wide spectrum of possible symptoms, coupled with a relative lack of awareness and recognition, are the reason that they are frequently not recognized, or remain undiagnosed. This book is an international, multidisciplinary guide to hypermobility syndromes, and EDS in particular. It aims to create better awareness of hypermobility syndromes among health professionals, including medical specialists, and to be a guide to the management of such syndromes for patients and practitioners. It is intended for use in daily clinical practice rather than as a reference book for research or the latest developments, and has been written to be understandable for any healthcare worker or educated patient without compromise to the scientific content. The book is organized as follows: chapters on classifications and genetics are followed by chapters on individual types, organ (system) manifestations and complications, and finally ethics and therapeutic strategies, with an appendix on surgery and the precautions which should attend it. A special effort has been made to take account of the perspective of the patient; two of the editors have EDS. The book will be of interest to patients with hypermobility syndromes and their families, as well as to all those healthcare practitioners who may encounter such syndromes in the course of their work.
