These questions are not simple and straightforward to answer; at the same time, simplistic answers are quite prevalent and are taken for granted. This book aims to explain the origin of the gene concept, its various meanings both within and outside science, as well as to debunk the intuitive view of the existence of 'genes for' characteristics and disease. Drawing on contemporary research in genetics and genomics, as well as on ideas from history of science, philosophy of science, psychology and science education, it explains what genes are and what they can and cannot do. By presenting complex concepts and research in a comprehensible and rigorous manner, it examines the potential impact of research in genetics and genomics and how important genes actually are for our lives. Understanding Genes is an accessible and engaging introduction to genes for any interested reader.

Book Understanding Life in the Borderlands

Download or read book Understanding Life in the Borderlands written by I. William Zartman and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have seen an intense, interdisciplinary interest in the border areas between states—inhabited territories located on the margins of a power center or between power centers. This timely and highly original collection of essays edited by noted scholar I. William Zartman is an attempt “to begin to understand both these areas and the interactions that occur within and across them”—that is, to understand how borders affect the groups living along them and the nature of the land and people abutting on and divided by boundaries. These essays highlight three defining features of border areas: borderlanders constitute an experiential and culturally identifiable unit; borderlands are characterized by constant movement (in time, space, and activity); and in their mobility, borderlands always prepare for the next move at the same time that they respond to the last one. The ten case studies presented range over four millennia and provide windows for observing the dynamics of life in borderlands. They also have policy relevance, especially in creating an awareness of borderlands as dynamic social spheres and of the need to anticipate the changes that given policies will engender—changes that will in turn require their own solutions. Contrary to what one would expect in this age of globalization, says Zartman, borderlands maintain their own dynamics and identities and indeed spread beyond the fringes of the border and reach deep into the hinterland itself.

From genetic codes, programs, and blueprints, to cell factories, survival of the fittest, the tree of life, selfish genes, and ecological niches, to genome editing with CRISPR's molecular scissors, metaphors are ubiquitous and vital components of the modern life sciences. But how exactly do metaphors help scientists to understand the objects they study? How can they mislead both scientists and laypeople alike? And what should we all understand about the implications of science's reliance on metaphorical speech and thought for objective knowledge and adequate public policy informed by science? This book will literally help you to better understand the metaphorical dimensions of science.

Book Understanding Life in the Universe

Download or read book Understanding Life in the Universe written by Wallace Arthur and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two most fascinating questions about extraterrestrial life are where it is found and what it is like. In particular, from our Earth-based vantage point, we are keen to know where the closest life to us is, and how similar it might be to life on our home planet. This book deals with both of these key issues. It considers possible homes for life, with a focus on Earth-like exoplanets. And it examines the possibility that life elsewhere might be similar to life here, due to the existence of parallel environments, which may result in Darwinian selection producing parallel trees of life between one planet and another. Understanding Life in the Universe provides an engaging and myth-busting overview for any reader interested in the existence and nature of extraterrestrial life, and the realistic possibility of discovering credible evidence for it in the near future.

Book Understanding Life and Its Challenges

Download or read book Understanding Life and Its Challenges written by Sondra Busby and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-07 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside, you will find countless numbers of stories, encounters, and interactions to demonstrate the true essence of Understanding Life and Its Challenges. This book will help readers to understand that they are not alone in this world and that they are not the only people to struggle. Most importantly, it shows readers that their particular situation was not invented overnight or just for them. It proves that everybody in someway or another has experienced the exact same horror. For some, this story will enable readers to realize that no matter how horrible your problems are, someone, somewhere is going through worse. Understanding Life and Its Challenges will enlighten readers to believe in themselves. It teaches readers to focus on the things in life that are important. This book teaches or reminds readers to remember the person that they were before the fall. Most importantly, remember that we were created for a purpose. I tried to embrace and bring back the surety and esteem in every individual. My antics are not proven, but just like medication (because people are different), every person will have a different solution and a different reaction. I just want people to remember that they are worth the battle and to put every ounce of their being into being whom God has called them to be. I want my readers to learn how to grab life by its tail and take it for the ride of a lifetime!

Book The Life of Understanding

Download or read book The Life of Understanding written by James Risser and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gadamer's hermeneutics, interpretation is inseparable from the broader concern of making one's way in life. In this book, James Risser builds on this insight about the juxtaposition of human living and the act of understanding by tracing hermeneutics back to the basic experience of philosophy as defined by Plato. For Risser, Plato provides resources for new directions in hermeneutics and new possibilities for "the life of understanding" and "the understanding of life." Risser places Gadamer in dialogue with Plato, with the issue of memory as a conceptual focus. He develops themes pertaining to hermeneutics such as retrieval as a matter of convalescence, exile as a venture into the foreign, formation with respect to oneself and to life with others, the experience of language in hermeneutics, and the relationship between speaking and writing.
