Book Understanding Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors on Sexual Health Promotion and Sexual Transmitted Infection Prevention Among CSUSM Students

Download or read book Understanding Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors on Sexual Health Promotion and Sexual Transmitted Infection Prevention Among CSUSM Students written by Adam Mora and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health concern among young adults, specifically college-aged students. Young individuals are more likely to engage in risky behaviors. If left untreated, STIs can cause serious adverse health outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge, attitude, and behaviors among college students related to STIs at California State University San Marcos. This study used a mixed methods approach by using qualitative interviews and a cross-sectional survey to determine factors associated with increased STI knowledge and safe sex behaviors. This project looked at three specific aims by using descriptive statistics and bivariate linear regression analysis. Results show an increased positive STI knowledge score among CSUSM student participants who: got tested for STIs, were not diagnosed with an STI, were aware of testing and sexual health services on campus, and had sex under the influence of alcohol and other drugs. Factors associated with high risk behaviors included students who reported: ever having sex, testing for STIs, sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs, sex with someone you met on internet/dating/hookup app, using marijuana, having a high number of sexual partners in the past six months, and binge drank in the last month. Sex and STI education should be comprehensive and offered more frequently to reduce STIs and high-risk sexual behaviors.

Book The Effect of Implementing Monetary Incentive Into a Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention and Education Program

Download or read book The Effect of Implementing Monetary Incentive Into a Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention and Education Program written by Haley Franklin Townsend and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this experimental study was to explore the effects of monetary incentives on the engagement with sexually transmitted infection education and prevention materials in 18- to 24-year-old females enrolled in a large Southeastern university. The Centers for Disease Control (2018) has recently reported a growing number of diagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States despite $16 billion being spent on STI prevention and education yearly. Over half of all newly diagnosed cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are in persons age 15-24 years. Screening and education programs exist, but the increasing number of STIs does not reflect their impact. This experimental study analyzed data from convenience sample of 156 undergraduate females randomly assigned to either a paid or unpaid group. A total of 107 participants completed the study, which consisted of a pretest, six weekly STI education messages delivered via text message, and a posttest six weeks after baseline data was gathered. Paid participants received a total of $50, paid in two increments, during the course of the study. It was conducted during the Fall semester in 2018 and examined four research questions, including, (1) "Is the use of monetary incentives in STI education and prevention a viable method to increase the effectiveness of education provided to adolescents and young adult females college students", (2) "Will there be a change over time in reported healthy sexual behaviors and intent to be tested for STIs among students who participate in the ISHK program", (3) "Will there be a difference in sexual attitudes, STI knowledge, reported STI testing rates among participants in the experimental group versus the control group after completion of the ISHK program", and (4) "What are reported motivators and deterrents to accessing STI education and prevention services". The study was conducted utilizing the Hendrick Sexual Attitude Scale, in conjunction with the National Sexual Health Survey and Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Results revealed significantly more engagement with education in the paid group than the unpaid group. There were mixed results in sexual behavior and attitude changes between and within each of the study groups. Numerous barriers to education were identified by participants and are further explored within the study. Additional research is warranted concerning the full effect of monetary incentive on changing sexual attitudes and behaviors in young adult females

Book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students

Download or read book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students written by Leo Wilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people aged 18 to 25 are at a significant risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Primary developmental processes that place college students particularly at risk include the experience of intimacy, sexual desires and the centrality of the peer group. During these routine developmental processes, college students experiment with unprotected sex, multiple sex partners and alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which are contributing risk factors for HIV/STI infections. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs is germane to promoting the sexual health of college students and reducing high HIV/STI infection rates among young people. This edited volume will provide innovative and cutting-edge approaches to prevention for college students and will have a major impact on advancing the interdisciplinary fields of higher education and public health. It will explore core ideas such as hooking up culture, sexual violence, LGBT and students of color, as well as HIV and STI prevention in community colleges, rural colleges and minority serving institutions.

Book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Amongst South Asian International Students at the University of Central Oklahoma

Download or read book Sexual Health Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Amongst South Asian International Students at the University of Central Oklahoma written by Kruti S. Chaliawala and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of sexual health knowledge among international students is multi-dimensional and is impacted by culture, society, parental guidance, environment, migration, and belongingness to the new culture. The topics of concern include lack of knowledge regarding reproductive anatomy, safer sex, the concept of consensual sex, pregnancy, abortion, and many others. Engaging in risky sexual behavior is linked with the lack of knowledge and attitudes towards sexual health. The current study aims to explore the sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of South-Asian international students at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Students for this study were recruited from the UCO international student pool. Students from India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal were asked to participate. Participants were asked to fill out the survey online through the Qualtrics system. A Kendall's Tau-b correlation was run to determine the relationship between attitude and knowledge/behavior amongst 34 participants. There was a moderate, positive correlation between sexual health attitude and sexual health knowledge/behavior, which was statistically significant at ([tau-b] = 0.531, p = 0.043). The results coincide with the literature that better sexual health knowledge is correlated with less risky behavior and a positive attitude towards sex and sexual health. The results of this study will give a better understanding of the needs related to the sexual health of international students at UCO.

Book HIV AIDS Related Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviour of FET College Students

Download or read book HIV AIDS Related Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviour of FET College Students written by Colleen Gail Moodley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantitative findings indicated high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, self-concept and self-efficacy. Risky sexual behaviour was measured in terms of condom use and the number of sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study with males reporting significantly more risky sexual behaviour. More males (70% vs. 43 % females) reported no condom use when engaging in sex. More males (62 % vs. 28 % females) reported having had two or more sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study. Results also suggested that an increase in knowledge of HIV/AIDS would predict an increase in the use of condoms particularly for males. Lower self-efficacy seemed to predict an increase in the number of sexual partners for males. The focus group discussions highlighted students' views of HIV/AIDS knowledge in relation to their sexual practices, attitudes and sexual decision-making. Influences such as personal factors (self-concept and self-efficacy), social factors (e.g. peer influences, gender, and status) and environmental factors (e.g. media) were investigated. Participants also commented on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS campaigns and the adequacy in provision of health services at college and community level. From the findings, guidelines were developed which may be used to reflect on current intervention programmes and may be considered when developing future interventions programmes, policies, or campaigns in promoting safer sexual practices amongst youth as a means of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

However, as people's sexual attitude has changed, a lack in sexual health education may lead to increasing rate of sexually transmitted diseases. In general, college is the last stage of students before they enter society. Hence, college is an ideal place for students to receive health education and acquire the knowledge of STD prevention and transmission. Objective: This systematic review aimed to examine whether health education interventions can increase STDs knowledge of college students in Mainland China, by evaluating the implemented interventions in the studies. Methods: Articles published from 2000 to 2015 were systematically searched through EMBASE, PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Inclusion and exclusion criteria were predefined for article selection. Intervention studies were included and assessed by TREND and CONSORT. Results: Sixteen articles were included after being examined carefully. Eleven studies of the 16 articles were pre-post studies, three were non-randomized trial studies, and there were two randomized control trials. All study outcomes were measured by self-administrated questionnaires which involved awareness rate of STDs knowledge, prevention and transmission as well as knowledge of reproduction and contraception. Results of pre-post studies showed that knowledge rate of the students increased. In addition, the differences appeared to be significant between intervention groups and control groups. Conclusion: This systematic review showed that the knowledge rate became higher after the intervention. But the intervention methods were restricted to lecturing and health education materials. The strength of the evidence of effectiveness was not strong. Therefore, diversified health education channels should be developed and evaluated to facilitate more effective interventions concerning STD prevention. Subjects: Sexually transmitted diseases - Study and teaching (Higher) - China

Book An Intervention to Change Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Related to Safe Sexual Practices in Adolescent Females to Reduce the Risk for HIV Infection

Download or read book An Intervention to Change Knowledge Attitudes and Behavior Related to Safe Sexual Practices in Adolescent Females to Reduce the Risk for HIV Infection written by Stephanie Ann Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent females in the United States and around the world are at an increase risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Understanding the factors that increase adolescent females vulnerability to HIV infection is necessary for the development of an effective HIV prevention program. The objective of this proposed research grant is to implement a community based HIV prevention program for adolescent females intended to change knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to safe sexual practices. A quantitative experimental pre-test/post-test control group design will be utilized for the proposed research study. Two hundred and sixteen adolescent females aged 13 to 18 years of age who live in San Diego County will be recruited to participate in the study. The Health Belief Model (HBM) will be used as the framework for the intervention. Both the intervention group and the control group will receive six 60-minute sessions provided by four trained female healthcare facilitators. The intervention group will receive education on HIV infection and skill building activities necessary to practice safe sex. The control group will receive education on sexual health, healthy relationships, and keeping a healthy body. The intended outcome of the proposed study is to see if there is a change in knowledge, attitudes, and behavior related to safe sexual practices in adolescent females after completing a HIV prevention program. Outcomes of the intervention will be evaluated using four instruments: (1) HIV-Knowledge Questionnaire for adolescent girls (HIV-KQ AG), (2) Adolescents’ Attitudes: AIDS Precautions Scale (3) UCLA Multi-dimensional Condom Attitudes Scale (MCAS), and (4) An Adolescent and Young Adult Condom Self- Efficacy Scale. The proposed study is significant to nursing because the advanced practice nurse (APN) is a major provider in caring for the adolescent population. This gives the APN a valuable opportunity to provide HIV prevention education that is crucial for the adoption of lifelong attitudes, skills, and behavior that support the overall health and well being of adolescent females

Book A Correlational Study of Self esteem and Attitudes Toward Contraceptive Efficacy to the Levels of Sexually Risky Behavior Among Undergraduate College Students

Download or read book A Correlational Study of Self esteem and Attitudes Toward Contraceptive Efficacy to the Levels of Sexually Risky Behavior Among Undergraduate College Students written by Nora Zappas and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior in undergraduate college students, with special reference to self-esteem and attitudes toward contraceptive efficacy. Because unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are prevalent among young adults, the purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship among factors that contribute to risky sexual behavior. This quantitative, correlational, and descriptive study used a questionnaire and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale to measure levels of the respondent's demographics, sexual health beliefs, knowledge, behaviors, self-esteem and contraceptive efficacy with a nonprobability sample of 76 undergraduate students at California State University, Sacramento. Overall findings showed that higher contraceptive efficacy contributes to safer sexual behaviors, but did not find correlations between self-esteem and sexual behavior. While some aspects of contraceptive efficacy were not strongly related to self-esteem, there is significance to evidence the fact that higher levels of self-esteem can assist in empowering people to stop sex, even at the risk of upsetting their partner, in favor of protecting their own health. The level of fulfillment in respondent's social life was found to correlate to contraceptive efficacy scores in this study. Additionally, higher levels of perceived sexual health knowledge of the respondents is correlated to higher levels of contraceptive efficacy. Recommendations include the need for targeted interventions to increase awareness, knowledge, and efficacy of sexual behavior among young college students; particularly to assist at-risk populations in preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Book Condoms Sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Download or read book Condoms Sex and Sexually Transmitted Diseases written by Anumeha Singh and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) continue to pose a serious risk to college students in the US. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the highest rates of STDs are among college students and adolescents. Specifically regarding Asian-Indian students, more research is needed to thoroughly understand the knowledge, attitudes and sexual behaviors of this population. Unfortunately, a comprehensive review of the literature found only a paucity of studies involving Asian-Indian involvement in sexual activity. Therefore, the present study was undertaken. The present examined Asian-Indian college students involvement in sexual intercourse and oral sex, experience in sex education, and overall STD knowledge, condom use rate, perceived benefits and barriers to condom use, and perceived confidence in communicating with a sexual partner about condoms, STDs and STD testing. This study also explored the most commonly reported sources Asian-Indian students used to obtain information on STDs. A 15-section survey was completed by 122 Asian-Indian students who were current students at a Midwestern university. Results indicated that overall STD knowledge was low. Females, students who had fewer perceived barriers and students who had lived in the US for at least three years knew significantly more than their counterparts about STDs. Such findings could be used by community and university-based health educators to more effectively serve the needs of Asian-Indian students.

Book Sex Drugs and Young People

Download or read book Sex Drugs and Young People written by Megan S. C. Lim and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young people are at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI), and engage in sex and drug related risk behaviour. This thesis investigates novel methods to reach youth for research and health promotion.Mobile phone text messages (SMS) are convenient, low cost, fast, and popular among youth. SMS has been utilised in sexual health for clinical management, service delivery and health promotion, but few of these projects have been evaluated. Recognising this lack of research led to the design of a randomised controlled trial investigating the use of SMS and email in sexual health promotion.Recruitment of young people for this trial was piloted at Melbourne's Big Day Out. 939 young people were recruited in several hours; 30% were classified as being at high risk of STI, and 46% had used illicit drugs in the month prior to the survey. Knowledge of STI was poor. Drug use was associated with both sexual risk behaviour and music preference. The study demonstrated that this festival is a valuable site for sex and drugs research and health promotion. The following year, young people were recruited at the music festival and randomised to an intervention group who received regular sexual health SMS and email, or a control group who received no messages. After 12 months, the intervention group had higher STI knowledge than the control group (OR 2.72, 95%CI 1.68, 4.41) and intervention group females were more likely to have had an STI test (OR 2.51, 95%CI 1.11, 5.69). Respondents' opinions of the messages were favourable. This simple, low-cost, and novel method was shown to be effective in improving young people's sexual health.At-risk young people are not well represented in sex and drug behavioural surveillance in Australia. As the pilot study identified that a music festival was a suitable site for sex and drug research, the survey was repeated each year. Between 2005 and 2008, the proportion of young people at risk of STI decreased from 34% to 29%, and recent illicit drug use decreased from 46% to 43%.A limitation of the studies described herein is reliance on self-report, which is subject to recall bias; this can be reduced using diaries to collect behavioural data. Participants completed weekly diaries of sexual behaviour and a retrospective questionnaire. Correlation between the diaries and questionnaire was substantial, adding confidence to the validity of results of other studies in this thesis.Diaries can be collected in different ways; SMS has not previously been used for this purpose. Participants were randomised to complete diaries through SMS, online or paper. Online diaries were superior to SMS in completeness and participant preference, but SMS diaries were more likely to be submitted on time. This thesis has tested several novel options for researching and promoting health to young people. Through music festivals, SMS, and email, young people can be reached through settings and media they are familiar with. Use of these novel methods has increased understanding of risk behaviour among youth and been effective in sexual health promotion.

Book The Sex Lives of College Students

Download or read book The Sex Lives of College Students written by Sandra L Caron and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third edition of The Sex Lives of College Students results are presented of more than a 100-question human sexuality survey administered over the past three decades (from 1990 to 2020) to thousands of college students ages 18-22. The goal is to better understand their sexual attitudes and behaviors, as well as trends. The findings raise awareness and provide perspective about students' understanding of sex matters and related difficult issues, and tell us we still have a long way to go before people own their sexuality. The survey reinforces the fact that young adults are generally comfortable pursuing sexual relationships, but often fail to openly discuss sexual issues. Some of the results suggest that the double standard is alive and well, as when more college women than men say that love is important in sex. The Sex Lives of College Students provides a springboard for honest dialogue about the role of sexuality in people's lives and a forum for more public discussion of private parts.
