Book excerpt: See How They Grow: Infants and Toddlers is a book that offers an overview of the growth and development of infants and toddlers from the neonate stage through the age of three. There is special emphasis on the phenomenological approach. This approach requires that the caregiver adopts a perspective that leads to a more human and responsive understanding of each child. This approach is combined with the scientific methodology allowing the caregiver to achieve a level of improved competence, becoming reflective practitioners. There is careful consideration of cultural differences in the book due to the ever present and increasing diversity of the US population. This allows the caregiver to be fully aware of how culture, beliefs, and traditions can influence the ultimate development of a child. The early chapters describe the philosophy of the book and explain various methods of observation. They also provide a baseline of information on growth and development. Further chapters focus on development in 3 month spans, leading to the full examination of how children grow and change rapidly in all domains: physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and language. Developmental variations and alerts are considered at each level, including health and safety issues as well as potential signs of abuse and neglect. The book includes multiple learning tools including key terms and words of wisdom, as well as an online companion. The reader will benefit fully from this thoughtful reference based in the acknowledgment that all children are competent and powerful learners.

Book Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale ITERS 3

Download or read book Infant Toddler Environment Rating Scale ITERS 3 written by Thelma Harms and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on extensive feedback from the field as well as vigorous new research on how best to support infant and toddler development and learning, the authors have revised and updated the widely used Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale. ITERS-3 is the next-generation assessment tool for use in center-based child care programs for infants and toddlers up to 36 months of age. ITERS-3 focuses on the full range of needs of infants and toddlers and provides a framework for improving program quality. Further, the scale assesses both environmental provisions and teacher-child interactions that affect the broad developmental milestones of infants and toddlers, including: language, cognitive, social-emotional and physical development, as well as concern for health and safety. ITERS-3 is appropriate for state- and district-wide QRIS and continuous quality improvement, program evaluation by directors and supervisors, teacher self-evaluation, monitoring by agency staff, and teacher training programs. The established reliability and validity of the scale make it particularly useful for research and program evaluation. While the approach to assessing quality and the scoring process remain the same for the new ITERS-3, users will find the following improvements informed by extensive use of the ITERS in the field and by the most recent research: Enhanced focus on interactions and the role of the teacher. Six new language and literacy Items. A new Item on beginning math experiences. Expanded age range to include children from birth to 36 months. A new approach to scoring based solely on observation of ongoing classroom activity (3-hour time sample). The elimination of the parents/staff subscale and teacher interviews, freeing up time for observing more actual classroom practice. Improved indicator scaling, providing more precise and useful scores for use in professional development and self-improvement. Reduced emphasis on the number of materials, along with greater emphasis on how materials are used to encourage learning. Suitable for use in inclusive and culturally diverse programs, ITERS-3 subscales evaluate: Space and Furnishings Personal Care Routines Language and Books Activities Interaction Program Structure

This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the view that positive changes in infant and toddler caregivers' relationships can help to achieve the shared goal of promoting young children's healthy development, this book provides stories or vignettes about relationships with children and their parents designed to stimulate individual reflection, encourage group discussion, and honor the complexity of caring for infants and toddlers. An introductory section describes the types of stories in the guide: (1) contrasting vignettes showing adults interacting with infants and toddlers in very different ways in similar circumstances; (2) scenarios showing young children, parents, and infant/family professionals at critical times in their relationships; and (3) "stumpers," presenting challenges inherent in working with infants, toddlers, and families. A 5-step process for using the stories as part of a structured learning experience is included. The next section presents guiding principles of "being" and "doing" with infants, toddlers, and families. The remainder of the book presents four contrasting vignettes, seven scenarios, and three "stumpers." Following some of the stories are lists of questions for trainers to consider in applying the 5-step process. (KB)
