Book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding

Download or read book Divine Scripture in Human Understanding written by Joseph K. Gordon and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In six closely-reasoned chapters, Joseph Gordon presents a detailed account of a Christian doctrine of Scripture in the fullest context of systematic theology. Divine Scripture in Human Understanding addresses the confusing plurality of contemporary approaches to Christian Scripture—both within and outside the academy—by articulating a traditionally grounded, constructive systematic theology of Christian Scripture. Utilizing primarily the methodological resources of Bernard Lonergan and traditional Christian doctrines of Scripture recovered by Henri de Lubac, it draws upon achievements in historical-critical study of Scripture, studies of the material history of Christian Scripture, reflection on philosophical hermeneutics and philosophical and theological anthropology, and other resources to articulate a unified but open horizon for understanding Christian Scripture today. Following an overview of the contemporary situation of Christian Scripture, Joseph Gordon identifies intellectual precedents for the work in the writings of Irenaeus, Origen, and Augustine, who all locate Scripture in the economic work of the God to whom it bears witness by interpreting it through the Rule of Faith. Subsequent chapters draw on Scripture itself; classical sources such as Irenaeus, Origen, Augustine, and Aquinas; the fruit of recent studies on the history of Scripture; and the work of recent scholars and theologians to provide a contemporary Christian articulation of the divine and human locations of Christian Scripture and the material history and intelligibility and purpose of Scripture in those locations. The resulting constructive position can serve as a heuristic for affirming the achievements of traditional, historical-critical, and contextual readings of Scripture and provides a basis for addressing issues relatively underemphasized by those respective approaches.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 A bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country's most prominent anthropologists. Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.

Book God s Breaking Through Process

Download or read book God s Breaking Through Process written by Rev. Jay Werman and published by Academia Ministerial . This book was released on 2021-12-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers everything related to the process God uses to renew us. A process unknown to many, but very necessary for all who would serve God. A comprehensive analysis of the transformation that results from the renewal of our minds as explained by Paul in Romans 12:2; Ephesians 4:23-24; Colossians 3:8-10. A solid understanding of the process God uses to produce visible results in our lives. I believe that when you finish studying this biblical material, you will have a clearer picture of how God transforms people. God's renewal process will prepare you to do God's will in your life! No believer will be able to reach the level of spiritual maturity unless that person is transformed by God, regardless of the title or position they hold in a church. It is a personal decision that each believer must make if he truly wants God to manifest Himself as the Scriptures say. God will not force anyone to surrender completely to Him or His will; that is something that each individual must choose. If we want people's approval, let's continue with the routine and religious life we have today, but if we really want to see the glory of God, then we must be processed or transformed by God. We have also added more material in this edition of this book where we have explained all the details that have to do with the mind, reason, intellect, will, and the emotions that reside in the soul, all in the biblical context. Expanding the definition of how God originally created the soul and what happens when something changes it. All of this biblical knowledge will allow you to overcome past problems and help others who may be struggling. There are additional biblical insights that clarify all of these issues, and they are found in the written Word of God.

Download or read book The Beauty of the Lord written by Jonathan King and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is God's beauty often absent from our theology? Rarely do theologians take up the theme of God's beauty—even more rarely do they consider how God's beauty should shape the task of theology itself. But the psalmist says that the heart of the believer's desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord. In The Beauty of the Lord, Jonathan King restores aesthetics as not merely a valid lens for theological reflection, but an essential one. Jesus, our incarnate Redeemer, displays the Triune God's beauty in his actions and person, from creation to final consummation. How can and should theology better reflect this unveiled beauty? The Beauty of the Lord is a renewal of a truly aesthetic theology and a properly theological aesthetics.

Book From Contemplation to Action

Download or read book From Contemplation to Action written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemplation is a spiritual process involving long, thoughtful, steady, serious, and attentive consideration or observation in order to achieve closer unity with God and to discover and understand God’s will for the contemplative. Contemplation gives rise to activity, and activity, in turn, gives rise to more contemplation. The result of contemplation is often called discernment, seeing clearly what is at first not very clear or obvious, understanding what is not immediately obvious, resulting in accuracy of spiritual perception. Divine discernment is contemplation in action; it results in insight, inspiration, and an awareness of inner truth upon which one must act. While there are countless models of contemplation leading to action, the ninth-century BCE prophets Elijah and Elisha are the examples used in this book. Both are seers, messengers, and heralds of the LORD. They appear in activity when they are needed, and they disappear into solitude and silence when they are not.
