Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we propose that the impact of assortment size on choice is moderated by goals (regulatory focus). We argue that if the choice is approached with a prevention focus, a consumer who lacks articulated preferences will concentrate on avoiding regret, and in needing to evaluate every option to correctly reject all but the one best alternative, will find it easier to process a small assortment. Conversely, a promotion-focused individual will stop at the choice that meets all of his/her requirements, so we predict a preference for a large assortment, as more options means more 'hits'. Prior research has shown that product category can trigger a consumer's prevention or promotion focus. We further suggest that product category will influence the ideal assortment size. When buying a 'prevention product', comparing many options increases the difficulty of making correct rejections, and we predict a preference for a small assortment. When buying a 'promotion product', the priority is to have as many 'hits' as possible, so we expect a preference for a large assortment. Understanding how goals are activated, given the purchasing decision, and how they moderate the assortment size/consumer response relationship will provide guidance to both manufacturers and retailers in terms of editing the assortment size to increase consumers' purchasing likelihood.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The primary goal of this research is to examine how consumers respond when their freedom to choose is constrained due to product unavailability. Reactance theory would suggest that restricting individuals' freedom of choice is likely to have an adverse effect, including lowered choice consistency caused by negative affect. The degree to which consumers will react adversely to product unavailability is likely to depend on how much freedom they expect prior to choice, and whether a choice constraint is perceived to be important to them. Managing consumers' expectations and perceptions in this regard represents an important challenge facing retailers. When should consumers be notified of a choice constraint, and what actions can be taken to minimize any detrimental effects on consumer choice and satisfaction? Two studies examine the role of psychological reactance in explaining consumer reaction to product unavailability. The first study establishes the importance of the timing of notification regarding product unavailability. Preference for the unavailable product is shown to moderate the relationship between the timing of notification and choice of the most similar alternative. The second study further explores the role of psychological reactance by examining the process by which consumers restore their freedom and reduce negative affect associated with product unavailability through the selection of another product. The theoretical contribution of this dissertation is to show how the timing of notification influences consumer choice and satisfaction. Past research argued that the presence of an unavailable alternative would increase the choice share of its most similar alternative due to consumers' cognitive biases, including loss aversion and similarity substitution. However, such cognitive accounts fail to fully explain why choice reverses when consumers are notified about product unavailability after they have made a choice. In addition, the existing accounts cannot rationalize why consumer preference impacts consumer reaction to product unavailability. Building on reactance theory, we offer a new motivational account that explains the role of both the timing of information and individual preference.

Book excerpt: The topic of product assortment has generated a plethora of research across various domains, including economics, analytical and empirical modeling, individual and group decision making, and social psychology. Despite the voluminous assortment research, however, the key findings have remained scattered across domains. In fact, the very domain of assortment research has not been clearly defined, thus complicating the understanding of the current state of assortment research. The goal of this review, therefore, is to define the field of assortment research and outline its key findings. In this context, this review delineates three key domains of assortment research: (1) how consumers perceive the variety of items in an assortment, (2) how consumers choose an item from a given assortment, and (3) how consumers choose among assortments. The key findings in each of these three areas are synthesized in the form of specific research propositions that build on the existing findings and provide guidance for further empirical investigation. By outlining the key findings in each of these three areas, this review offers an integrative framework for understanding the impact of assortment on consumer choice.

Taking a consumer's perspective to examine how product assortment influences decision making and choice, this monograph defines the consumer aspect of assortment research to answer three key questions. First, how do consumers perceive the variety of items in an assortment? The first part of this review examines factors that influence consumer perceptions of the variety of an assortment. In particular, it investigates how factors such as assortment size, the degree of distinctiveness of assortment options, the dispersion of option frequencies, and the organization of the assortment influence consumer perceptions of assortment variety. Second, how do consumers choose an item from a given assortment? The second part discusses factors that influence consumer choice of an item from a given assortment. It examines the impact of assortment size on the purchase likelihood from a given assortment, the number of options purchased, and the particular options chosen from the assortment. Third, how do consumers choose among assortments? The third part examines factors that influence consumer choice among assortments. In particular, it investigates how assortment size, assortment structure, and purchase quantity influence consumers' choice of an assortment. Conceptual analysis of the existing research in each of these three areas is summarized in a series of research propositions that integrate current findings and offer directions for future research. Product Assortment and Consumer Choice: An Interdisciplinary Review concludes with a discussion of the theoretical contributions and managerial implications of existing product assortment research and identify venues for further investigation.

This improved information endowment results in changes in consumer behavior and corporate strategy. This dissertation proposes new theoretical perspectives - firm informedness, customer informedness, and informedness through learning - to re-conceptualize the decision making process of customer-centric revenue management. It consists of three studies. First, using multiple cases in which firms adopt smart cards and mobile technologies in America, Europe, and Asia, we examine the value creation process of the firm using the explanation of firm informedness and investigate how it advances revenue management. Second, we test the theory of consumer informedness and examine heterogeneity in consumer preferences using stated choice experiments. We find the evidence for trading down and trading out behavior and show that the use of mobile ticketing technologies can help firms to build a hyper-differentiated transport market. Finally, using a computational simulation, we explore the opportunity for devising service offerings to capture profitable consumer responses, considering demand-driven revenue and capacity-management. Overall, this research introduces methods, models, and guidelines for organizations to strategize the informational challenge, make informed decisions, and create transformational values to win in today's competitive network environment.

Service quality is a solution to build customer satisfaction which could lead to customer loyalty hence reducing switching intentions. The current study has investigated the interrelationship between service quality, customer satisfaction, customer loyalty with switching intentions of customers, and the moderating role of price discounts and store ethnicity, in a single framework. Random sampling was used by administering standardized questionnaires personally to 450 hypermarket customers located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The results confirmed that retail service quality has significant positive influence on customer satisfaction, and the positive effect of customer satisfaction on customer loyalty. Besides, the study verified store ethnicity and price discounts acted as moderating mechanism for explaining the switching intentions of satisfied and loyal customers. The results serve as a guideline for top managers of the hypermarkets to design appropriate policies and strategies in terms of retail service quality, price discounts and identifying the needs of ethnic groups in a particular region. This will help to enhance customer satisfaction and customer loyalty hence reducing switching intentions of customers.
