Book excerpt: This thesis seeks to better understand why Turkish educational policy towards Syrian refugee children has changed. Turkey has faced the challenge to address the educational needs of over a million Syrian school-aged children. Turkish government officials are concerned that an entire generation of uneducated Syrian children may increase possible future societal issues, such as crime, illiteracy, and unemployment. Turkish authorities have not always adopted the same approach when addressing educational needs of its children and curriculum. After eight years of the conflict within Syria with no end in sight, Turkey is initiating massive changes to further integrate Syrian refugees into its society, including through the provision of educational access. This thesis primarily focuses on the explanations behind the transition of childrens attendance from temporary education centers (TECs) to Turkish public schools. To understand this transition, the author reviewed the academic literature, conducted semi-structured interviews in Turkey with a diverse representation of the main stakeholders, and applied a thick description methodology. The research found that policy changed due to misperceptions on how long the Syrian conflict would last. This research is important because it highlights the various factors and lessons learned that may apply to educational policy within other states hosting large refugee movements.

Book excerpt: Schooling for Refugee Children is a collaboration between five authors who explore their interactions with refugee children displaced from Syria to the Lebanese borders and London. Through a programme of carefully tailored research activities, they analyse the children’s representations of their personal journeys and current circumstances, especially with regard to ongoing schooling. The children’s experiences are expressed through their own words and drawings, disrupting the stereotype of children as ‘receivers’ rather than empowered actors, and challenging traditional solutions for improving schooling. Throughout, the children are eloquent about their schooling in the context of displacement. Their views and illustrations depict a keen awareness of social justice issues, including on the distribution of wealth, recognition of status and representation of voice. These are framed by the authors within Nancy Fraser’s concept of social justice as parity-of-participation. In this way, the book brings to light important representations of some empowering experiences lived through by refugee children from Syria, as well as their thoughts on what has helped their learning and what can be done better. The children’s need for care and a sense of belonging in their schools and new communities is given particular emphasis throughout the book, represented by one child, who simply requested, ‘Add some more love!’

The two previous editions (17-19 October 2011, 24-26 November 2014), with approximately 200 European and international participants each, covering more than 50 countries each, were organized prior to the Ministerial Conferences, thus encouraging a consistent dialogue between researchers and policy makers. The main conclusions of the FOHE Conferences were presented at the EHEA Ministerial Conferences (2012 and 2015), in order to make the voice of researchers better heard by European policy and decision makers. This volume is dedicated to continuing the collection of evidence and research-based policymaking and further narrowing the gap between policy and research within the EHEA and broader global contexts. It aims to identify the research areas that require more attention prior to the anniversary 2020 EHEA Ministerial Conference, with an emphasis on the new issues on rise in the academic and educational community.
