Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003 my partner Kathleen, proposed a bungalow with a great view of the night sky. December 2005 and one year into telescopes, the optics of the length halved again 8” Cape-Newise got me tasting my own medicine unwittingly and gladly. The confident advertising style mirrored mine for Bailey designed hi-fi speakers, making 100 in the 70’s, exporting 30 to Germany. My approach has been that of being Isaac Newton through the ages, and after each advancement writing down the achievements at the eyepiece. The 3rd edition of March 2014 was still only 16 pages, 6 of which were the instructions and still are. 50 pages of interest were enabled by 2 months in a recliner chair waiting for surgery. Edition numbers change only with improvements to method. They settled down in October 2014 and the 4th edition printings began in March 2015 and have been selling an average of 6 a day at events since 2012. Intuitive adjustments, too easily fallen into, are prevented by following the instructions chapter in this book. The first 2 sentences of stage [1] and all of stage [4] work equally well for Cassegrain type in-line optics. Mirror cleaning, vetted by a mirror manufacturer, has always been included.

Tonkin, Author Binocular Astronomy "Bill Cook is a seasoned optical professional who has perfected 'everything binocular' with his no nonsense approach to straightening the curves of understanding concerning them. With an unmatched writing style, his vignette on Collimation vs. Conditional Alignment is spot on!" - Gail Fisher, Repair Manager, Swarovski Optik "I have gone through your book and I am amazed - it should be printed asap! It was not only fun to read, but also highly educational and absolutely worth studying, even for the experienced binocular user." - Holger Merlitz, Professor of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian, PR China. "This is an important book and one that should be read by engineers, binocular users, collectors, dealers, and manufacturers." - Paul R. Yoder, Fellow Member of SPIE and OSA, Co-Author Field Guide to Binoculars and Scopes Written for any serious user, "Binoculars: Fallacy & Fact" provides a fascinating look at the world of binoculars by someone who knows binoculars inside and out. And when I say inside, I mean truly inside as Bill Cook has spent his career adjusting and repairing binoculars. Bill knows his stuff and he is not afraid to clarify the facts and to share his honest opinions with us. The book comes across as a casual conversation making it an easy read but chock-full of information illuminated by personal anecdotes. - John E. Greivenkamp, Professor, College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona "Going through the US Navy Opticalman "A" School with Bill, serving with him aboard USS Grand Canyon, and later working with him at Captain's Nautical Supplies in Seattle, I can attest that you'll not find a man more passionate or knowledgeable about optics and binoculars. Any odd-ball questions asked by the novice or self-proclaimed expert are quickly answered in a straight-forward and accurate manner. This book goes well beyond the ever-regurgitated numbers and gets into the facts of how it all works." - Cory A. Suddarth, President, Suddarth Optical Repair "When it comes to optics, think Bill Cook. I have known him for several decades and his credentials are as strong as they come. When a question arises that I am unsure of, he is one of the first to be called on among the dozen or so experts I trust. Bill is not out to protect brands and factories when they continually mislead consumers about their products. Instead, he tells it like it is - straight and honest - even when manufacturers get upset when they hear the truth. This book will not only be helpful for those thinking about purchasing a binocular, but also those who want to learn more about the instrument they have now." - Alan Hale has served as C.E.O. and President of Celestron and is currently Chairman Emeritus of the company. Alan is the author of "Sport Optics - Binoculars, Spotting Scopes, and Riflescopes"

Book Building and Using Binoscopes

Download or read book Building and Using Binoscopes written by Norman Butler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-25 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides easy to understand information and guidelines about the design and construction of binoscopes Focusing on both homemade and commercial products, this book provides the reader with simple and straightforward information about the modelling and building of binoscopes. Binoscopes can be thought of as binoculars enlarged to the size of telescopes: essentially, a combination of the two. Constructing a binoscope is easier than most people think, but it still demands attention to detail and proper background knowledge. The author goes on to provide additional information about how to understand the products currently on the market, should the reader choose to purchase a binoscope instead of building one. Lastly, the book also compares binoscopes with telescopes in great detail, outlining the differences the reader can expect to see in the night sky from using both. The celestial views obtained with a binoscope, compared to a single telescope of the same aperture, are a very different experience and well worth the effort.

Book Tactical Display for Soldiers

Download or read book Tactical Display for Soldiers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-01-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are basic and valuable tools in various scientific and engineering disciplines. They allow us to see the invisible: the optical inhomogeneities in transparent media like air, water, and glass that otherwise cause only ghostly distortions of our normal vision. These techniques are discussed briefly in many books and papers, but there is no up-to-date complete treatment of the subject before now. The book is intended as a practical guide for those who want to use these methods, as well as a resource for a broad range of disciplines where scientific visualization is important. The colorful 400-year history of these methods is covered in an extensive introductory chapter accessible to all readers.

Book Classic Telescopes

  • Author : Neil English
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-08-30
  • ISBN : 1461444241
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Classic Telescopes written by Neil English and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic telescopes are of interest to amateur astronomers for a variety of reasons. There are the dedicated collectors, but there are also many amateurs who love the nostalgia they inspire. These telescopes "feel" different from any contemporary telescope and perhaps have a unique ability to reconnect the owner to a bygone age of craftmanship. This book takes a look at traditional telescopes built by the great instrument makers of the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly the dynastic telescope makers, including Dollond, Alvan Clark, Thomas Cooke & Sons, and Carl Zeiss. Also included are lesser luminaries such as John Brashear, John Calver, William Wray, Henry Fitz, and William Henry Mogey. 'Classic Telescopes' covers the key features of the telescopes designed by these manufacturers, and shows how a heady combination of market trends, instrument condition, and pedigree will dictate their prices at auction. 'Classic Telescopes' also shows the reader how to find real bargains! Interviews with top classic telescope collectors (and users) provide the best tips of prospecting for a genuine acquisition.

Book Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope

Download or read book Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope written by Neil English and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope has been written for the many amateur astronomers who already own, or are intending to purchase, a refracting telescope – perhaps to complement their existing arsenal of larger reflecting telescopes – or for the specialist who requires a particular refractor for serious astronomical applications or nature studies. Four hundred year ago, during the winter of 1609, a relatively unknown Italian scientist, Galileo Galilei designed a spyglass with two crude lenses and turned it skyward. Since then, refractors have retained their dominance over all types of reflector in studies of the Moon, planets and double stars because of the precision of their optics and lack of a central obstruction in the optical path, which causes diffraction effects in all commercially-made reflectors. Most mature amateur astronomers got started with a 60mm refractor, or something similar. Thirty years ago, there was little choice available to the hobbyist, but in the last decade long focus crown-flint achromats have moved aside for some exquisitely crafted apochromatic designs offered by leading commercial manufacturers. There has been a huge increase in the popularity of these telescopes in the last few years, led by a significant increase in the number of companies (particularly, William Optics, Orion USA, StellarVue, SkyWatcher and AstroTech) who are now heavily marketing refractors in the amateur astronomical magazines. In Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope, well-known observer and astronomy writer Neil English celebrates the remarkable history and evolution of the refracting telescope and looks in detail at the instruments, their development and their use. A major feature of this book is the way it compares not only different classes of refractor, but also telescopes of each class that are sold by various commercial manufacturers. The author is perhaps uniquely placed to do this, having used and tested literally hundreds of different refracting telescopes over three decades. Because it includes many diverse subjects such as imaging with consumer-level digital cameras, imaging with webcams, and imaging with astronomical CCD cameras – that are not covered together in equal depth in any other single volume – Choosing and Using a Refracting Telescope could become the ‘refractor bible’ for amateur astronomers at all levels, especially those who are interested in imaging astronomical objects of every class.
