Book Understanding Aggressive Driving Behavior

Download or read book Understanding Aggressive Driving Behavior written by Enilda Maite Velazquez and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results indicated that personality factors and individual differences were significant predictors of aggressive driving outcomes. A series of stepwise regression analyses revealed a significant linear relationship between trait anger and aggressive driving; trait anger and cognitive failures with aggressive driving; trait anger, cognitive failures, and trait cooperation with aggressive driving. However, the stepwise regression did not show a significant relationship between personality factors of Neuroticism and Agreeableness in relation to aggressive driving. Interestingly, the models supported the use of trait anger and trait cooperation as predictors of aggressive driving behavior. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and directions for future research are also presented.

Book When What Happens at Work Impacts Behavior During the Commute Understanding the Mechanisms that Link Workplace Attitudes and Experiences to Aggressive Driving Behaviors

Download or read book When What Happens at Work Impacts Behavior During the Commute Understanding the Mechanisms that Link Workplace Attitudes and Experiences to Aggressive Driving Behaviors written by Katrina A. Burch and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggressive driving behaviors have been gaining in notoriety in recent years, with U.S. drivers identifying aggressive driving as a serious problem. Researchers have called for understanding the contextual factors that contribute to drivers engaging in such behaviors. If individuals engage in aggressive- and potentially aggressive- driving behaviors during their work-to-home commutes, it is possible that some aspects of work may be influencing these behaviors. The present study examined the influence of employee's work attitudes and experiences on aggressive- and potentially aggressive- driving behaviors, and the mechanisms that might explain the nature of any spillover effects. Data were collected via a baseline survey and daily diaries administered over the course of one working week, from employees (N = 109) who worked full-time and commuted by private vehicle alone on a daily basis. Objective indicators of potentially aggressive driving behaviors were also collected using a mobile application from a subset of the sample (N = 31) during one working week. Daily diary surveys indicated that on days when employees experience job stress and incivility at work, they engage in aggressive driving behaviors during their work-to-home commutes, through the explanatory mechanisms of negative emotions while driving and perceived psychological contract violation during the commute. In addition, some convergent support was found for the hypothesized relationships using potentially aggressive driving behaviors as the outcome of interest in both the survey- and app-based samples. Overall, the present findings suggest that spillover effects due to employees experiencing job stress and workplace incivility have the potential to impact behaviors elicited during the commute, raising the risk of detrimental consequences for both the employee and employer. Practical implications and future lines of research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What accounts for the remarkable ability to get inside another person's head—to know what they're thinking and feeling? "Mind reading" is the very heart of what it means to be human, creating a bridge between self and others that is fundamental to the development of culture and society. But until recently, scientists didn't understand what in the brain makes it possible. This has all changed in the last decade. Marco Iacoboni, a leading neuroscientist whose work has been covered in The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and The Wall Street Journal, explains the groundbreaking research into mirror neurons, the "smart cells" in our brain that allow us to understand others. From imitation to morality, from learning to addiction, from political affiliations to consumer choices, mirror neurons seem to have properties that are relevant to all these aspects of social cognition. As The New York Times reports: "The discovery is shaking up numerous scientific disciplines, shifting the understanding of culture, empathy, philosophy, language, imitation, autism and psychotherapy." Mirroring People is the first book for the general reader on this revolutionary new science.

Book Analysis of Aggressive Driving Behavior

Download or read book Analysis of Aggressive Driving Behavior written by Nima Golshani and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggressive driving behavior is the cause of a large percentage of accidents and fatalities, and it is growing every year. In several cases some drivers perceive their driving as non-aggressive when in fact they drive aggressively. To investigate factors affecting perceived (self-reported) and observed (based on the data from a driving simulation experiment) aggressive driving behavior, four fixed effect bivariate ordered probit models for three categories of aggressive driving behavior (i.e., observed and perceived non-aggressive, somewhat aggressive and very aggressive driving) are estimated. The models simultaneously account for panel data effects and cross equation error correlation. To further address unobserved heterogeneity, six grouped random parameter bivariate probit models for two outcomes (observed and perceived non-aggressive and aggressive driving) are estimated. Each model type is estimated using different barriers as driving behavior separators (either physical barriers in the distribution, or basic statistical measures). The results show that different socio-demographic characteristics, driving experience and exposure, and behavioral information of the participants affect the observed and the perceived aggressive driving behavior. The proposed approach, as a whole, provides an incremental step towards better understanding the different factors that affect the observed and the perceived aggressive driving behavior.

Book The Psychology of the Car

Download or read book The Psychology of the Car written by Stefan Gossling and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychology of the Car explores automotive cultures through the lens of psychology with the goal of achieving a low-carbon transport future. Worldwide there are now more than one billion cars, and their number grows continuously. Yet there is growing evidence that humanity needs to reach ‘peak cars’ as increased air pollution, noise, accidents, and climate change support a decline in car usage. While many governments agree, the car remains attractive, and endeavors to change transport systems have faced fierce resistance. Based on insights from a wide range of transport behaviors, The Psychology of the Car shows the “why of automotive cultures, providing new perspectives essential for understanding its attractiveness and for defining a more desirable transport future. The Psychology of the Car illustrates the growth of global car use over time and its effect on urban transport systems and the global environment. It looks at the adoption of the car into lifestyles, the “mobilities turn, and how the car impacts collective and personal identities. The book examines car drivers themselves; their personalities, preferences, and personality disorders relevant to driving. The book looks at the role power, control, dominance, speed, and gender play, as well as the interrelationship between personal freedom and law enforcement. The book explores risk-taking behaviors as accidental death is a central element of car driving. The book addresses how interventions can be successful as well as which interventions are unlikely to work, and concludes with how a more sustainable transport future can be created based on emerging transport trends. Features deep analyses of individual and collective psychologies of car affection, moving beyond sociology-based interpretations of automobile culture Illustrates concepts using popular culture examples that expose ideas about automobility Shows how fewer, smaller and more environmentally friendly cars, as well as low-carbon transport modes, are more socially attractive

Book Understanding Driving

Download or read book Understanding Driving written by John A. Groeger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book closely examines what is involved in driving. It identifies the aspects of perception, attention, learning, memory, decision making and action control which are drawn upon in order to enable us to drive, and the brain systems involved. It attempts to show how studying tasks such as driving can help to understand how these fundamental aspects of cognition combine to facilitate performance in complex everyday tasks. In doing so it shows how a very broad range of laboratory based findings can be applied, and that through our attempts to apply this knowledge to complex everyday tasks, we gain, in return, a greater understanding of fundamental aspects of human cognition.
