An understanding of variability not only facilitates behavior modeling efforts but also provides insights into the complex factors underpinning people's travel behaviors. Previous studies of behavioral variability have mostly concentrated on non-spatial aspects. This dissertation contributes to the existing literature by examining the spatial variability of activity location choices. Activity locations are a set of spatially dispersed places where individuals perform activities. They play a critical role in structuring human travels, as individuals' demand for travelling in space is derived from the demand for activity participation. Specifically, two research questions are of interest: 1) how is location variability affected by time-of-day? 2) how can the knowledge of location variability be used to inform the development of location prediction models? Analyses are performed with a mobile phone data set consisting of the traces of 120,435 individuals over two months. Significant time-of-day dependence of location variability is identified. Time-of-day effect is found to take account for 36% of the total variations in location variability. The results emphasize the importance of time-of-day in shaping one's location choice behavior and provide a basis for future modeling efforts on location variability. Location variability is found to be an instrumental indicator of the amount of input information required for location prediction. Specifically, given 100 historical (not necessarily unique) locations, an accuracy level marginally over 80% can be achieved for people with low location variability. In contrast, for those individuals with a high level of location variability, prediction accuracy can hardly reach 50% with 100 historical locations. This finding has significant implications on making more efficient location predictions. It will allow us to customize the amount of information input in location prediction for subpopulations differing in location variability by removing redundant information. Being able to discard some data without compromising model prediction accuracy is one way to deal with an overwhelming amount of data.

Book excerpt: Traffic planners are facing a big challenge with an increasing demand for mobility and a need to drastically reduce the environmental impacts of the transportation system at the same time. The transportation system therefore needs to become more efficient, which requires a good understanding about the actual travel patterns. Data from travel surveys and traffic counts is expensive to collect and gives only limited insights on travel patterns. Cellular network data collected in the mobile operators infrastructure is a promising data source which can provide new ways of obtaining information relevant for traffic analysis. It can provide large-scale observations of travel patterns independent of the travel mode used and can be updated easier than other data sources. In order to use cellular network data for traffic analysis it needs to be filtered and processed in a way that preserves privacy of individuals and takes the low resolution of the data in space and time into account. The research of finding appropriate algorithms is ongoing and while substantial progress has been achieved, there is a still a large potential for better algorithms and ways to evaluate them. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the potential and limitations of using cellular network data for traffic analysis. In the three papers included in the thesis, contributions are made to the trip extraction, travel demand and route inference steps part of a data-driven traffic analysis processing chain. To analyse the performance of the proposed algorithms, a number of datasets from different cellular network operators are used. The results obtained using different algorithms are compared to each other as well as to other available data sources. A main finding presented in this thesis is that large-scale cellular network data can be used in particular to infer travel demand. In a study of data for the municipality of Norrköping, the results from cellular network data resemble the travel demand model currently used by the municipality, while adding more details such as time profiles which are currently not available to traffic planners. However, it is found that all later traffic analysis results from cellular network data can differ to a large extend based on the choice of algorithm used for the first steps of data filtering and trip extraction. Particular difficulties occur with the detection of short trips (less than 2km) with a possible under-representation of these trips affecting the subsequent traffic analysis.

Recent advancements of location-aware technologies have produced large collections of individual tracking datasets. Mobile phone location data, as one of the many emerging data sources, provide new opportunities to understand how people move around at a relatively low cost and unprecedented scale. However, the increasing data volume, issue of data sparsity, and lack of supplementary information introduce additional challenges when such data are used for human behavioral research. Effective analytical methods are needed to meet the challenges to gain an improved understanding of individual mobility and collective behavioral patterns. This dissertation proposes several approaches for analyzing two types of mobile phone location data (Call Detail Records and Actively Tracked Mobile Phone Location Data) to uncover important characteristics of human mobility patterns and activity spaces. First, it introduces a home-based approach to understanding the spatial extent of individual activity space and the geographic patterns of aggregate activity space characteristics. Second, this study proposes an analytical framework which is capable of examining multiple determinants of individual activity space simultaneously. Third, the study introduces an anchor-point based trajectory segmentation method to uncover potential demand of bicycle trips in a city. The major contributions of this dissertation include: (1) introducing an activity space measure that can be used to evaluate how individuals use urban space around where they live; (2) proposing an analytical framework with three individual mobility indicators that can be used to summarize and compare human activity spaces systematically across different population groups or geographic regions; (3) developing analytical methods for uncovering the spatiotemporal dynamics of travel demand that can be potentially served by bicycles in a city, and providing suggestions for the locations and daily operation of bike sharing stations.
