Book excerpt: Is there One God or Three? How does one reconcile the "One God" of the Sh'ma with the "Three Persons" of the Trinity? The doctrine of the trinity has been at the heart of much theological controversy. The routine objection is that the doctrine sacrifices monotheism to "tritheism." But this objection thrives on a misconception of divine personality in the image of disparate, individual, human selves. This type of rationalistic apologetics, promotive of trinitarianism on speculative rather than revelational grounds, regrettably encourages this misunderstanding. One of the reasons we suffer such misunderstanding is due to our relying on "models." Chuck explores the ostensible tensions between the Old and New Testament revelations of the ultimate mystery of the Godhead. This is a foundational study for every Christian.

Book The Mystery of the Godhead

Download or read book The Mystery of the Godhead written by Leslie Dutcher and published by Leslie Dutcher. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This narrative is about the mystery of the Godhead, understanding the Godhead, what is God’s name, and who is God. Many people believe that all gods are the same, but this is not true. Different religions have different names for the gods they worship. Some religions call their god Allah, or Buddha, or Jehovah, etcetera. However, there is only one true God! As Christians the first thing we should understand is that the Godhead is a mystery designed by God. 1 Timothy 3:16, “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.” (KJV) The Apostle wrote, “great is the mystery of Godliness.” This verse is saying the Godhead is a mystery designed by God. Let us try and figure out why God made the Godhead a mystery.

Download or read book The Mystery of God written by Steven D. Boyer and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can I know God if he is incomprehensible? Is it possible to know God in a way that takes seriously the fact that he is beyond knowledge? Steven Boyer and Christopher Hall argue that the "mystery of God" has a rightful place in theological discourse. They contend that considering divine incomprehensibility invites reverence and humility in our thinking and living as Christians and clarifies a variety of theological topics. The authors begin by investigating the biblical, historical, and practical foundations for understanding the mystery of God. They then spell out its implications for theological issues and practices such as the incarnation, salvation, and prayer, rooting knowledge of God in a concrete life of faith. Evangelical yet ecumenical, this book will appeal to theology students, pastors, church leaders, and all who want intellectual and practical guidance for knowing the unknowable God.

Now one class of such men endeavor to transfer to things incorporeal and spiritual the ideas they have formed, whether through experience of the bodily senses, or by natural human wit and diligent quickness, or by the aid of art, from things corporeal; so as to seek to measure and conceive of the former by the latter. Book excerpt: Mankind exhibits a habit of devising objects to worship, ranging from real and imagined beings, which became commonly accepted over time in their human societies. No efforts were spared as they created elaborate rituals and places of worship replete with idols in various forms and splendor. Generations of followers of charismatic leaders cause the masses to often accept new and radical teachings resulting in the surfacing of yet another religious sect. Using the element of fear regarding the assurance of their salvation has caused entire generations of followers to submit to man-made religious forms. This book both exposes false religious concepts and focuses on the proven existence of the only true royalty that has brought all spiritual and material objects into existence. The author asks the reader to have an open mind uncluttered by the influences of current religious beliefs.

Book Why The Mystery

  • Author : Carl Keller

Download or read book Why The Mystery written by Carl Keller and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As author, my intent is to provide a proper format in approaching and understanding what is one of the greatest mysteries of all time, as stated in 1 Timothy 3:16: "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory" (1 Tim. 3:16). If the reader can understand why there is a mystery or hidden truth, the mystery itself begins to be revealed. Who is the one true God? Multitudes today are still locked in darkness without this understanding. Are their divisions in the Godhead? Why can't the doctrine of the Trinity be brought into focus and clearly understood and taught by even the most knowledgeable of biblical scholars? The clarification concerning the doctrine of the Trinity is one of the greatest of modern religious dilemmas. This appears simply because, in Scripture, there is seemingly evidence of more than one person in the Godhead. Does not this confusion of the obvious appearance of three divine entities mentioned in New Testament Scripture need some kind of explanation, especially since it contradicts Old Testament theology clearly stating that there is but one supreme deity? Through the years of teaching this subject, my experience has been that honest people who are hungering for truth have accepted this teaching as absolute truth. Very few with an open heart to truth have not been absolutely astonished at these principles as they unfolded before them. But just as astonishing is the fact that, for most of them, nowhere have they been presented with these scriptural truths before. The desired purpose of this book is to bring into focus a clear view of the deity of Christ and to give the student a launching pad for his or her own research into this most intriguing portion of scripture summarized in 1 Timothy 3:16.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Book excerpt: When did Satan fall? We know that the angels were created prior to the Earth. We find Satan had already fallen in Genesis 3. The mystery is, when did he fall? It appears that there are substantial Scriptural references to his rebellion, his agenda, and the subsequent catastrophic judgment that ensued. This raises the whole issue of the origin of evil. And why hasn't God simply wiped him, and sin, out completely? It is also disturbing to recognize that Satan tempted Jesus by offering him the kingdom, power and the glory in the temptations recorded in Luke 5. How could Satan lay a legitimate claim to these?
