Download or read book Bruno Schulz and Galician Jewish Modernity written by Karen Underhill and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, through the prose of Bruno Schulz (1892–1942), the Polish language became the linguistic raw material for a profound exploration of the modern Jewish experience. Rather than turning away from the language like many of his Galician Jewish colleagues who would choose to write in Yiddish, Schulz used the Polish language to explore his own and his generation's relationship to East European Jewish exegetical tradition, and to deepen his reflection on golus or exile as a condition not only of the individual and of the Jewish community, but of language itself, and of matter. Drawing on new archival discoveries, this study explores Schulz's diasporic Jewish modernism as an example of the creative and also transient poetic forms that emerged on formerly Habsburg territory, at the historical juncture between empire and nation-state.

Download or read book The Woodwright s Guide written by Roy Underhill and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thirty years, Roy Underhill's PBS program, The Woodwright's Shop, has brought classic hand-tool craftsmanship to viewers across America. Now, in his seventh book, Roy shows how to engage the mysteries of the splitting wedge and the cutting edge to shape wood from forest to furniture. Beginning with the standing tree, each chapter of The Woodwright's Guide explores one of nine trades of woodcraft: faller, countryman and cleaver, hewer, log-builder, sawyer, carpenter, joiner, turner, and cabinetmaker. Each trade brings new tools and techniques; each trade uses a different character of material; but all are united by the grain in the wood and the enduring mastery of muscle and steel. Hundreds of detailed drawings by Eleanor Underhill (Roy's daughter) illustrate the hand tools and processes for shaping and joining wood. A special concluding section contains detailed plans for making your own foot-powered lathes, workbenches, shaving horses, and taps and dies for wooden screws. The Woodwright's Guide is informed by a lifetime of experience and study. A former master craftsman at Colonial Williamsburg, Roy has inspired millions to "just say no to power tools" through his continuing work as a historian, craftsman, activist, and teacher. In The Woodwright's Guide, he takes readers on a personal journey through a legacy of off-the-grid, self-reliant craftsmanship. It's a toolbox filled with insight and technique as well as wisdom and confidence for the artisan in all of us.

Download or read book Frank Underhill and the Politics of Ideas written by Kenneth C. Dewar and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Underhill (1889-1971) practically invented the role of public intellectual in English Canada through his journalism, essays, teaching, and political activity. He became one of the country's most controversial figures in the middle of the twentieth century by confronting the central political issues of his time and by actively working to reform the Canadian political landscape. His propagation of socialist ideas during the Great Depression and his criticism of the British Empire and British foreign policy almost cost him his job at the University of Toronto. In Frank Underhill and the Politics of Ideas, Kenneth Dewar demonstrates how Underhill's thought evolved from his days as a student at Toronto and Oxford, to his drafting of the Regina Manifesto - the founding platform of the leftist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation - to his support of his long-time friend Lester Pearson’s Liberals in the 1960s. Not willing to be bound by partisan loyalties, his later shift toward the political centre dismayed many of his former allies. The various issues Underhill confronted, Dewar argues, were connected by the pioneering role he played as an intellectual and by his social democratic vision of politics. Dewar also reassesses Underhill’s historical work, focusing on how it differed from the new professional history practised by his younger colleagues. Intelligently written and thoroughly researched, Frank Underhill and the Politics of Ideas delivers important insights into twentieth-century political life and innumerable lessons for twenty-first century Canada.

Download or read book Calvin Cobb written by Roy Underhill and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Underhill of PBS's 'The Woodwright's Shop' has written what could be the world's first-ever woodworking novel: 'Calvin Cobb: Radio Woodworker!' It's a screwball comedy set in 1937 about a woodworker who heads the U.S. government's agricultural 'Broadcast Research' division. Along with his staff of four women (all severely injured WWI volunteers), Calvin studies 'broadcast seed, nutrient and amendment distribution technology and practice' -- that is, what happens when the poop actually hits the fan. But the four women are more interested in developing the world's first supercomputer (using abandoned punch-card machines), and Calvin is more interested in woodworking ... and in one particular woman: Kathryn Dale Harper, host of the radio program 'Homemaker Chats.' How best to woo her? Why, a radio show: 'Grandpa Sam's Woodshop of the Air!' It's an almost-overnight sensation (for measured drawings, write to 'Grandpa Sam's' and be sure to include a 3 cent stamp to cover the cost of duplication). But -- as Calvin discovers -- success breeds jealousy ... a dangerous thing when one's enemy has friends in high places. Can Calvin and his friends save the world through woodworking, one listener at a time? Perhaps -- but first, they'll have to save themselves from Nazis, the clutches of the FBI, bureaucracy and wooden legs that break at inopportune times

Book excerpt: An “eye-opening” (Kirkus Reviews) and timely exploration of how our food—from where it’s grown to how we buy it—is in the midst of a transformation, showing how this is our chance to do better, for us, for our children, and for our planet, from a global expert on consumer behavior and bestselling author of Why We Buy. Our food system is undergoing a total transformation that impacts how we produce, get, and consume our food. Market researcher and bestselling author Paco Underhill—hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a Sherlock Holmes for retailers”—reveals where our eating and drinking lives are heading in his “delectable” (Michael Gross, New York Times bestselling author of 740 Park) book, How We Eat. In this upbeat, hopeful, and witty approach, How We Eat reveals the future of food in surprising ways. Go to the heart of New York City where a popular farmer’s market signifies how the city is getting country-fied, or to cool Brooklyn neighborhoods with rooftop farms. Explore the dreaded supermarket parking lot as the hub of innovation for grocery stores’ futures, where they can grow their own food and host community events. Learn how marijuana farmers, who have been using artificial light to grow a crop for years, have developed a playbook so mainstream merchants like Walmart and farmers across the world can grow food in an uncertain future. Paco Underhill is the expert behind the most prominent brands, consumer habits, and market trends and the author of multiple highly acclaimed books, including Why We Buy. In How We Eat, he shows how food intersects with every major battle we face today, from political and environmental to economic and racial, and invites you to the market to discover more.

Underhill examines how a woman's role as homemaker has evolved into homeowner; how the home gym and home office are linked to the women's health movement and home-based businesses; why the refrigerator has trumped the stove as the crucial appliance; why some malls are succeeding while others fail. "The point is," writes Underhill, "while men were busy doing other things, women were becoming a major social, cultural, and economic force."
