Book Underground Cities

Download or read book Underground Cities written by Mark Ovenden and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over 60 per cent of the world’s population living in cities, the networks beneath our feet – which keep the cities above moving – are more important than ever before. Yet we never truly see how these amazing feats of engineering work. Just how deep do the tunnels go? Where do the sewers, bunkers and postal trains run? And, how many tunnels are there under our streets? Each featured city presents a ‘skyline of the underground’ through specially commissioned cut-away illustrations and unique cartography. Drawing on geography, cartography and historical oddities, Mark Ovenden explores what our cities look like from the bottom up.

Book Tu sais mon vieux Jean Pierre

Download or read book Tu sais mon vieux Jean Pierre written by John Willis and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tu sais, mon vieux Jean-Pierre is inspired by the work of archaeologist Jean-Pierre Chrestien (1949–2008), who worked hand-in-glove with a generation of researchers in helping to unearth unexpected and always interesting aspects of New France. Contributions focus first upon the door to New France in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland and Acadia. A second set of essays move further up the St. Lawrence and into the heartland of the continent. The final section examines aspects of Canadian culture: popular art, religion and communication. The essays share a curiosity for material culture, a careful regard for detail and nuance that forms the grain of New France studies, and sensitivity to the overall context that is part and parcel of how history proceeds on the local or regional scale. Happily we can now dispense with old-fashioned and facile generalizations about the allegedly absent bourgeoisie, the purportedly deficient commercial ethic of the habitants and the so-called underlying military character of the colony and get down the business of understanding real people and their possessions in context.

Book Creolization and Transatlantic Blackness

Download or read book Creolization and Transatlantic Blackness written by Charmaine A. Nelson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Departing from more conscribed definitions, this book argues for an expansion of the concept of ‘Creolization’ in terms of duration, temporality, population, and importantly, in regional scope, which also impact climate and the practices of slavery that are typically included and excluded from consideration. Eschewing the normative focus on language and music, the authors instead center art and visual, and material cultures, as both outcomes and practices, in their explorations to consider the ways that cultural production in the period of slavery and its aftermath was irrevocably impacted by the collision of races and cultures in the Americas. The chapters probe how creolization unfolded for differently constituted individuals and populations, as well as how it came to be articulated both in the historical moments of its enactment and its retroactive cultural representations and production. In so doing, they seek to both expand the terrain (literally and figuratively) of the definition of creolization and to turn towards an examination of its relevance for art and visual, and material cultures of the Transatlantic world. The chapters in this book were originally published in African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal.

Book The Oak Island Mystery

Download or read book The Oak Island Mystery written by Patricia Fanthorpe and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oak Island mystery has been the world’s greatest and strangest treasure hunt, and after years of research the authors have finally solved the sinister with an answer that is challenging, controversial, and disturbing. In 1795 three boys discovered the top of an ancient shaft on uninhabited Oak Island in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. The boys began to dig, and what they uncovered started the world’s greatest and strangest treasure hunt but nobody knows what the treasure is. Two hundred years of courage, back-breaking effort, ingenuity, and engineering skills have failed to retrieve what is concealed there. Theories of what the treasure could be include Captain Kidd’s bloodstained pirate gold, an army payroll left by the French or British military engineers, priceless ancient manuscripts, the body of an Arif or other religious refugee leader, or the lost treasure of the Templars. The Oak Island curse prophesies that the treasure will not be found until seven men are dead and the last oak has fallen. That last oak has already gone, and six treasure hunters have been killed. After years of research, the authors have finally solved the sinister riddle of Oak Island, but their answer is challenging, controversial, and disturbing. Something beyond price still lies waiting in the labyrinth.
