Book The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism

Download or read book The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism written by Liam Chambers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism examines the period from the defeat of the Jacobite army at the battle of Culloden in 1746 to the enactment of Catholic emancipation in 1829. The first part of the volume offers a chronological overview tracing the decline of Jacobitism, the easing of penal legislation which targeted Catholics, the complex impact of the French Revolution, the debates about the place of Catholics in the post-Union state, and - following the mass mobilisation of Irish Catholics - the passage of emancipation. The second part of the volume shows that this political history can only be properly understood with reference to the broader transformations that occurred in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The period witnessed the expansion of Catholic infrastructure (pastoral structures, chapel building, elementary education and finances) and changes in Catholic practice, for example in liturgy and devotion. The growing infrastructure and more public profession of Catholicism occurred in a society where anti-Catholicism remained a force, but the volume also addresses the accommodations and interactions with non-Catholics that attended daily life. Crucially, the transformations of this period were international, as well as national. The volume examines the British and Irish convents, colleges, friaries and monasteries on the continent, especially during the events of the 1790s when many institutions closed and successor or new ones emerged at home. The international dimensions of British and Irish Catholicism extended beyond Europe too as the British Empire expanded globally, and attention is given to the involvement of British and Irish Catholics in imperial expansion. This volume addresses the literary, intellectual and cultural expressions of Catholicism in Britain and Ireland. Catholics produced a rich literature in English, Irish, Scots Gaelic and Welsh, although the volume shows the disparities in provision. They also engaged with and participated in the Catholic Enlightenment, particularly as they grappled with the challenges of accommodation to a Protestant constitution. This also had consequences for the public expression of Catholicism and the volume concludes by exploring the shifting expression of belief through music and material culture.

Book excerpt: This encyclopedia covers the entirety of the Celtic world, both through time and across geography. Although emphasizing the areas where Celtic languages and traditions survive into the present, the work does not slight the reaches of the Celtic empire, which was the largest language and cultural group on earth prior to the rise of Rome. In some 1,500 articles, many representing original research by the finest Celtic scholars, the work covers the Celts from prehistory to the present, giving comprehensive treatment to all topics from myth to music, religion to rulers, literature to language, government to games, and all topics in between.

Book People and Places in the Story of the Scottish Church

Download or read book People and Places in the Story of the Scottish Church written by Edwin Sprott Towill and published by Saint Andrew Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In handy alphabetical order, notes are presented on over 180 selected people and places of interest and importance in the long and fascinating story of the Church in all its forms in Scotland. In addition, over 460 cross-references are provided to assist in tracing connected names and sites. This is neither a biographical dictionary nor a religious gazetteer. The author has made his own wide choice of subjects, on which he then gives his impressions and comments, the result of careful research on the people and of personal visits to most of the places mentioned. The choice concentrates not on the best-known figures or most-visited places but rather on those which, though significant, tend to be passed over in popular histories and guidebooks, covering not only the Catholic and Protestant streams of the Church but also some strange and lesser-known sects. The book is intended for readers wanting to learn about the ecclesiastical institutions in their locality, for visitors eager to uncover some of the romance of Scottish church history, and not least for teachers and students whose projects in environmental studies will be incomplete unless they include the church buildings and religious monuments of the country. All who use these notes should find in them a little about the highways and quite a lot about the byways of Scottish life as it related to the things of the spirit. Mr Towill's easy-to-use compilation is the first of its kind on this subject, with an approach wide enough to be of interes't and value to a great variety of readers, regard less of denomination or religious faith. A chronological index of people and a geographical index of places are provided, plus a section on bibliography and sources, and the whole work is further enhanced by Colin Gibson's fine drawings.

Book A History of Catholic Education and Schooling in Scotland

Download or read book A History of Catholic Education and Schooling in Scotland written by Stephen J. McKinney and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the development of Catholic schooling in Scotland over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Scholarship of this period tends to be dominated by discussions of the 1872 and 1918 Education (Scotland) Acts: while these crucial acts are certainly not neglected in this volume, the editors and contributors also examine the key figures and events that shaped Catholic education and Catholic schools in Scotland. Focusing on such diverse themes as lay female teachers and non-formal learning, this volume illuminates many under-researched and neglected aspects of Catholic schooling in Scotland. This wide-ranging edited collection will illuminate fresh historical insights that do not focus exclusively on Catholic schooling, but are also relevant to the wider Scottish educational community. It will appeal to students and scholars of Catholic schooling, schooling in Scotland, as well as Christian schooling more generally.

Book Prince Pen and Sword Eurasian Perspectives

Download or read book Prince Pen and Sword Eurasian Perspectives written by Maaike van Berkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince, Pen, and Sword offers a synoptic interpretation of rulers and elites in Eurasia from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. Four core chapters zoom in on the tensions and connections at court, on the nexus between rulers and religious authority, on the status, function, and self-perceptions of military and administrative elites respectively. Two additional concise chapters provide a focused analysis of the construction of specific dynasties (the Golden Horde and the Habsburgs) and narratives of kingship found in fiction throughout Eurasia. The contributors and editors, authorities in their fields, systematically bring together specialised literature on numerous Eurasian kingdoms and empires. This book is a careful and thought-provoking experiment in the global, comparative and connected history of rulers and elites.
