Download or read book Underdown s Practical Fire Precautions written by Ronald Hirst and published by Gower Publishing Company, Limited. This book was released on 1989 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a third edition of a reference work originally written by George Underdown. The book has been revised by Ron Hirst, who has also added new material, including chapters on combustion technology, automatic systems, the protection of special hazards, and the evaluation of risk. Although essentially a practical work, the theoretical material should widen the application of the book by making the fire engineer aware of the wide range of fire and explosion hazards. At the same time it should provide a basic understanding of the techniques and equipment by which these risks can be mitigated.

Book Industrial Hazard and Safety Handbook

Download or read book Industrial Hazard and Safety Handbook written by Ralph W King and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Hazard and Safety Handbook (Revised Impression) describes and exposes the main hazards found in industry, with emphasis on how these hazards arise, are ignored, are identified, are eliminated, or are controlled. These hazard conditions can be due to human stresses (for example, insomnia), unsatisfactory working environments, as well as secret industrial processes. The book reviews the cost of accidents, human factors, inspections, insurance, legal aspects, planning for major emergencies, organization, and safety measures. The text discusses regulations, codes of practice, site layout, causes of building failure, condition monitoring, non-destructive testing, hazard analysis, and equipment design. The working environment of employees covers air and breathing, lighting and vision, noise and hearing, heat and comfort, fatigue and rest breaks, industrial hygiene and toxicology, or personal protective clothing and devices. The text also points out that some common industrial hazards are due to poor housekeeping (greasy floors, scattered tools), slipped disc (due to wrong handling of heavy loads), falls, falling objects, static electricity, lifting tackles, and wheeled transport inside factories. The book is intended for safety specialists, managers, and engineers responsible for design, production, inspection and maintenance in industry. The book will also be helpful for insurers or lawyers whose work is concerned with industrial accidents and their consequences.

Book Energy and Environmental Challenges to Security

Download or read book Energy and Environmental Challenges to Security written by Stephen Stec and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-01-25 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 21 November 2007 the grand and elegant Delegates Hall of the Hungarian Parliament was the scene of the opening of a conference to discuss some of the most pressing issues of the day, those related to our unending thirst for energy, its environmental consequences, and the challenges that these bear on security. Over the next 3 days scientists, parliamentarians and their guests confronted, challenged, teased and cajoled each other in a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) entitled “Energy and Environmental Challenges to Security,” affirming that knowledge and public service hold the keys to solving our greatest challenges. The magnitude of the security challenge was confirmed while this volume was being prepared. In mid-2008, the International Energy Agency issued a report concluding that US$45 trillion would be needed over the next half century to prevent energy shortages and greenhouse gas emissions from undermining global economic growth. But lest such large numbers cause us all to shrug, this volume brings attention to some of the more manageable aspects of the environment and energy security challenge – from addressing conflict resources such as illegal timber that contribute to corruption and regional instability, to means and mechanisms to enable the diversification of energy supplies, to environmental risk reduction strategies for particular installations. The participants in the Hungarian Parliament building were atypical for a NATO Advanced Research Workshop.

Book Fire from Heaven

Download or read book Fire from Heaven written by David Underdown and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2003 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two hundred years before Hardy disguised it as Casterbridge, Dorchester was a typical English county town, of middling size and unremarkable achievements. But on 6 August 1613 much of it was destroyed in a great conflagration, which its inhabitants regarded as a 'fire from heaven', the catalyst for the events described in this book. Over the next twenty years, a time of increasing political and religious turmoil all over Europe, Dorchester became the most religiously radical town in the kingdom. The tolerant, paternalist Elizabethan town oligarchy was quickly replaced by a group of men who had a vision of a godly community in which power was to be exercised according to religious commitment rather than wealth or rank. One of this book's most remarkable achievements is the re-creation, with an intimacy unique for an English community so distant from our own, of the lives of those who do not make it into history books. We glimpse the ordinary men and women of the town drinking and swearing, fornicating and repenting, triumphing over their neighbours or languishing in prison, striving to live up to the new ideals of their community or rejecting them with bitter anger and mocking laughter. In it subtle exploration of human motives and aspirations, in its brilliant and detailed reconstruction, this book shows how much of the past we can recover when in the hands of a master historian.
