This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a scathing indictment of the Mormon Church and its leaders. Cannon, a former senator from Utah and a onetime member of the church, reveals the inner workings of the theocracy that rules the state, showing how its leaders use political power to enforce their will and suppress dissent. Drawing on extensive research and firsthand knowledge, he documents how the church controls education, the press, and the legal system, and how it exploits its members for financial gain. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the American West or the relationship between church and state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Harvey J. O'Higgins was in Denver, in the spring of 1910, working with Judge Ben B. Lindsey on the manuscript of "The Beast and the Jungle," for Everybody's Magazine, he met the Hon. Frank J. Cannon, formerly United States Senator from Utah, and heard from him the story of the betrayal of Utah by the present leaders of the Mormon Church. This story the editor of Everybody's Magazine commissioned Messrs. Cannon and O'Higgins to write. They worked on it for a year, verifying every detail of it from government reports, controversial pamphlets, Mormon books of propaganda, and the newspaper files of current record. It ran through nine numbers of the magazine, and not so much as a successful contradiction was ever made of one of the innumerable incidents or accusations that it contains. It is here published in book form at somewhat greater length than the magazine could print it. It is a joint work, but the autobiographic "I" has been used throughout, because it is Mr. Cannon's personal narrative of his personal experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from By Order of the Prophet a Tale of Utah In the fertile valley of Utah, lying in the heart of the Rockies, there is material for a score of books. Some day its full history shall have been written, and with its writing must come a revelation of con ditions that have been well concealed during the three quarters of a century, in which Mormonism has been developing. This book deals with but one phase of that life - it is true in every essential feature, and is in strict accord with established facts. Book excerpt: This is a memoir of Frank J. Cannon (1859-1933). Although born into a prominent Mormon family, Cannon was a freethinker and a progressive. He recounts an insiders' view of the painful process by which the Mormon church and the state of Utah became integrated into the United States. He played an active role in this history, lobbying for statehood both in the halls of Washington D.C. and in the inner councils of the Mormon church. This work is highly critical of the Mormon hierarchy, the conformist and inward-looking aspects of Mormon society, and of polygamy. However, he also praises the social programs of the Church. This is an important source document for the history of the Mormon people and the state of Utah.

Download or read book The Mormon Prophet Classic Reprint written by Lily Dougall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mormon Prophet In studying the rise of this curious sect I have discovered that certain misconceptions concerning it are deeply rooted in the minds of many of the more earnest of the well-wishers to society. Some otherwise well-informed people hold Mormonism to be synonymous with polygamy, believe that Brigham Young was its chief prophet, and are convinced that the miseries of oppressed women and tyrannies exercised over helpless subjects of both sexes are the only themes that the religion of more than two hundred thousand people can afford. When I have ventured in conversation to deny these somewhat fabulous notions, it has been earnestly suggested to me that to write on so false a religion in other than a polemic spirit would tend to the undermining of civilised life. Book The Youngest Bishop in England

Download or read book The Youngest Bishop in England written by Robert Bridgstock and published by See Sharp Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part analytical work, this treatise details Robert Bridgstock’s life as an active Mormon, his struggles with his faith, his submerging of such doubts for the sake of keeping peace with his devout family, and his eventual departure from the Church due to the abuse he suffered. After joining the Mormon Church at the age of 18, Bridgstock went on to become the youngest Mormon bishop in England and remained active in the Church for more than four decades, serving it in many capacities and deeply studying Mormon scripture and history. But after having and voicing doubts about Mormonism, and because Church authorities and scripture never delivered satisfactory answers to his questions, he left the Church and renounced the religion. An enthralling read from a leading figure within the Church, this account provides a unique, day-to-day look into Mormon life.
