Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Oaks: Commemorating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Founding of the Republican Party, at Jackson, Michigan, July 6, 1854; Comprising a History of the Party in Michigan; The Proceedings of the Anniversary Celebration, and Portraits of Leading Michigan Republican Nothing could have been more appropriate than that Michigan should observe, in an elaborate manner, the fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the Republican party. For it was in this state, under the oaks of Jackson, that the first Republican state convention was held, and here that form was first given to the rising sentiment in the north against the further extension of slavery. From that day to this, Michigan Republicans have been leaders in those movements which have made the record of the party a glorious one. Although the first Republican state convention was not held until July 6, 1854, the movement which made it possible commenced some months earlier. There were many Free Soilers and Whigs who disliked to break their old party attachments, and it required great tact and the exercise of the highest patriot ism to bring them together. The convention when it did meet, was a most notable gathering. A single one of the committees 'had among its seven members two who were afterwards governors of the state, and two who were United States senators. Altogether in its recorded membership, there were six who were afterwards governor of the state, four United States senators, two supreme court justices, about twenty congressmen and many others who were prominent in other walks of public life. In the fifty years that have passed since then, the party thus formed has had every United States senator from Michigan, has elected its candidates for governor with two exceptions, and has controlled every legislature save one. Its history is the history of the state. It has encouraged by wise legislation the development of the immense material resources of Michigan. It has promoted education. It has been liberal and advanced in its penal laws and institutions, and it has created and fostered eleemosynary institutions that are famous throughout the country. Book excerpt: The first biographical account of the life of James Gillespie Birney in more than fifty years, this fabulously insightful history illuminates and elevates an all-but-forgotten figure whose political career contributed mightily to the American political fabric. Birney was a southern-born politician at the heart of the antislavery movement, with two southern-born sons who were major generals involved in key Union Army activities, including the leadership of the black troops. The interaction of the Birneys with historical figures (Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Henry Clay) highlights the significance of the family’s activities in politics and war. D. Laurence Rogers offers a unique historiography of the abolition movement, the Civil War, and Reconstruction through the experiences of one family navigating momentous developments from the founding of the Republic until the late 19th century.

Download or read book Michigan s War written by John W. Quist and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it came to the Civil War, Michiganians never spoke with one voice. At the beginning of the conflict, family farms defined the southern Lower Peninsula, while a sparsely settled frontier characterized the state’s north. Although differing strategies for economic development initially divided Michigan’s settlers, by the 1850s Michiganians’ attention increasingly focused on slavery, race, and the future of the national union. They exchanged charges of treason and political opportunism while wrestling with the meanings of secession, the national union, emancipation, citizenship, race, and their changing economy. Their actions launched transformations in their communities, their state, and their nation in ways that Americans still struggle to understand. Building upon the current scholarship of the Civil War, the Midwest, and Michigan’s role in the national experience, Michigan’s War is a documentary history of the Civil War era as told by the state’s residents and observers in private letters, reminiscences, newspapers, and other contemporary sources. Clear annotations and thoughtful editing allow teachers and students to delve into the political, social, and military context of the war, making it ideal for classroom use.
