Book The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov

Download or read book The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov written by Robert Edward Duncan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the complete correspondence between two of the most important and influential American poets of the postwar period. The almost 500 letters range widely over the poetry scene and the issues that made the period so lively and productive. But what gives the exchange its special personal and literary resonance is the sense of spiritual affinity and shared conviction about the power of the visionary imagination. Duncan and Levertov explore these matters in rich detail until, under the stress of dealing with the Vietnam War in poetry, they discover deep-seated differences in the religious and ethical convictions underlying their politics and poetic stance. The issues that drew them together and those that drove them apart create a powerful personal drama with far-reaching historical and cultural significance. The editors have provided a critical Introduction, full notes, a chronology, and a glossary of names.

Book Autopsy in Athens

  • Author : Margaret M. Miles
  • Publisher : Oxbow Books

Download or read book Autopsy in Athens written by Margaret M. Miles and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue” excavations of recent years, conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympics Games, combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material, using new techniques and applications, brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life, politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive, firsthand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by reexamining material from older excavations, and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection. They offer a variety of perspectives on a range of issues: the ambiance of the ancient city for passersby, filled with roadside shrines; techniques of architectural construction and sculpting; religious expression in Athens including cults of Asklepios and Serapis; the precise procedures for Greek sacrifice; how the borders of Attica were defined over time, and details of its road-system. In presenting this volume the contributors are continuing in a long tradition of autopsy – in the sense of 'personal observation' – in Athens, that began even in the Hellenistic period and has continued through the writings of centuries of travelers and academics to the present day.

Book Philemon in Perspective

  • Author : D. Francois Tolmie
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 311022173X
  • Pages : 407 pages

Download or read book Philemon in Perspective written by D. Francois Tolmie and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated entirely to the interpretation of Paul's Letter to Philemon. The letter is approached from a wide variety of perspectives, thus yielding several new insights into its interpretation. In a first essay the tendencies in the research on the letter since 1980 are outlined. This is followed by essays devoted to the epistolary analysis and to a rhetorical-psychological interpretation of the letter; as well as an essay devoted to the rhetorical function of stylistic form in the letter. After this there are two essays devoted to situating the letter in its ancient context: one views the letter against the background of ancient legal and documentary sources and another one against the background of slavery in early Christianity. The next two essays focus on theological aspects, namely on the letter as ethical counterpart of Paul's doctrine of justification and on the role that love plays in the letter. Three essays focus on ideological issues: the contextual interpretation of the letter in the US, a post-colonial reading of the letter and the letter's legacy of hierarchy and obedience. The volume concludes with four essays on the way in which the letter was interpreted by the some of the Church Fathers: Origen, Jerome, Chrystostom, Augustine and Theodore of Mopsuestia.

Book The Kobayashi Hitchin Correspondence

Download or read book The Kobayashi Hitchin Correspondence written by Martin Lbke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence, the authors of this book mean the isomorphy of the moduli spaces Mst of stable holomorphic resp. MHE of irreducible Hermitian-Einstein structures in a differentiable complex vector bundle on a compact complex manifold. They give a complete proof of this result in the most general setting, and treat several applications and some new examples. After discussing the stability concept on arbitrary compact complex manifolds in Chapter 1, the authors consider, in Chapter 2, Hermitian-Einstein structures and prove the stability of irreducible Hermitian-Einstein bundles. This implies the existence of a natural map I from MHE to Mst which is bijective by the result of (the rather technical) Chapter 3. In Chapter 4 the moduli spaces involved are studied in detail, in particular it is shown that their natural analytic structures are isomorphic via I. Also a comparison theorem for moduli spaces of instantons resp. stable bundles is proved; this is the form in which the Kobayashi-Hitchin has been used in Donaldson theory to study differentiable structures of complex surfaces. The fact that I is an isomorphism of real analytic spaces is applied in Chapter 5 to show the openness of the stability condition and the existence of a natural Hermitian metric in the moduli space, and to study, at least in some cases, the dependence of Mst on the base metric used to define stability. Another application is a rather simple proof of Bogomolov's theorem on surfaces of type VI0. In Chapter 6, some moduli spaces of stable bundles are calculated to illustrate what can happen in the general (i.e. not necessarily Kahler) case compared to the algebraic or Kahler one. Finally, appendices containing results, especially from Hermitian geometry and analysis, in the form they are used in the main part of the book are included."
