Framed for murder, Chloe and a handsome Cajun stranger must search for a priceless treasure, one whose roots weave through the very history of Louisiana itself. Book Cajun Moon

Download or read book Cajun Moon written by Kenneth Cowle and published by SoulAsylumPoetryPublishing. This book was released on 2005-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cajun Moon - A Journey Through Time, is an expression of the poet's being. The selections for this premiere edition from Kenneth Cowle are a glimpse at the emotions, scars and life experiences that over time shaped who he is today. Ranging from deep passion to the baring of a tormented heart, many of these poems evoke feelings and imagery that will touch a romantic soul. There are many pieces that affirm Kenneth Cowle's belief in a loving God, the essential goodness of us all; and the responsibility we have to care for each other and for Mother Nature. For the young at heart you will find playful poems about childish things. Several of the poems are complimented by original illustrations drawn by the poet's mother, Jean Cowle. As a keen admirer of various structures of poetry, Kenneth includes short poems in alternative styles such as Senryu and Lantern. For the most part though, the poems have received a minimum of editing and may seem raw to readers looking for a collection of safe and traditional poems. Line breaks and punctuation are sometimes intentionally off kilter to move the reader's eyes through a poem with changes in pace to enhance the mere reading of words. You may find some of yourself in Cajun Moon, or feel off balance for a moment or two as you read of a tempestuous journey that has come to a place of peace and acceptance. The wish of Kenneth Cowle is that however you experience this collection, you feel. A Soul Asylum Poetry Production

Book Good God but You Smart

Download or read book Good God but You Smart written by Nichole E. Stanford and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Cajuns as a case study, Good God but You Smart! explores the subtle ways language bias is used in classrooms, within families, and in pop culture references to enforce systemic economic inequality. It is the first book in composition studies to examine comprehensively, and from an insider’s perspective, the cultural and linguistic assimilation of Cajuns in Louisiana. The study investigates the complicated motivations and cultural concessions of upwardly mobile Cajuns who “choose” to self-censor—to speak Standardized English over the Cajun English that carries their cultural identity. Drawing on surveys of English teachers in four Louisiana colleges, previously unpublished archival data, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the legitimate language, author Nichole Stanford explores how socioeconomic and political pressures rooted in language prejudice make code switching, or self-censoring in public, seem a responsible decision. Yet teaching students to skirt others’ prejudice toward certain dialects only puts off actually dealing with the prejudice. Focusing on what goes on outside classrooms, Stanford critiques code switching and cautions users of code meshing that pedagogical responses within the educational system are limited by the reproductive function of schools. Each theory section includes parallel memoir sections in the Cajun tradition of storytelling to open an experiential window to the study without technical language. Through its explication of language legitimacy and its grounding in lived experience, Good God but You Smart! is an essential addition to the pedagogical canon of language minority studies like those of Villanueva, Gilyard, Smitherman, and Rose.

Book Icarus Syndrome

Download or read book Icarus Syndrome written by John Long and published by Di Angelo Publications. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking risks and exploring the unknown are as vital to human beings as our need for air, for growth, for affirmation that we exist for something. These 19 stories reach deep into humanity’s compulsion for the rush of new experiences. But gently, because it’s not only records we might shatter. When does adventure turn to recklessness? What happens when we toe the edge above the void and face the big silence, where we might see God -- and die without warning? The Icarus Syndrome seeks to capture our push for more and hold it to the light, lofty and free, for as long as we dare tempt the downward slip. Both are possible; only one is assured.

Book Stories from the Dirt

Download or read book Stories from the Dirt written by John Long and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riding tubes in Venezuela. BASE jumping in Europe. Climbing big walls in Yosemite. Riding bulls in Texas. These first-person stories from acclaimed climber and adventurer John Long may be vastly different in content, but they share an identifiable emotional texture, tone and delivery, and fundamentally are of one piece. This is storytelling at its best—nonfiction that reads like fiction. In Stories from the Dirt, the action leaves you breathless, but it’s the characters that really leave a lasting mark. Like all stories worth a damn, this collection is all about the people.

Book Superstar in a Masquerade

Download or read book Superstar in a Masquerade written by William Sargent and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 1312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superstar in a Masquerade tells the story about Leon Russell, an award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, who was born with cerebral palsy, and learned to master the piano. He became an in-demand session man in Hollywood, contributing to thousands of songs by hundreds of artists, during his seven-decade career. He was called the "Rainbow Minister & Ringleader" for the Hippie Generation, and although most people can say they never heard of him, few can say they've never heard him. After reading this book, you can play "Three Degrees of Leon," just like the game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon," linking him to anyone, from B.B. King to ZZ Top. As an emigre from Oklahoma to California, he invited David Gates and J. J. Cale to join him in the music mecca known as Tinseltown, where the Tulsa Trio made untold contributions to America's popular music. Read about over five hundred artists, and their songs that Leon, David, and J. J. helped create, as well as... When seventeen-year-old Leon replaced Jerry Lee Lewis on stage in 1959. How Frank Sinatra caused Leon to let his hair grow. How J. J. Cale played a role in the formation of the band Bread. How Leon saved Joe Cocker's career and created Willie Nelson's famous image. When Elton John was Leon's opening act on tour. Why DC Comics sued Leon's record label for $2 million. When David Gates's band backed Chuck Berry on stage in 1961. When Leon brazenly threw the "F-bomb" at Phil Spector. When Leon called organized Christianity the single most harmful force in history. What Broadway song Leon borrowed from for "This Masquerade."

Book The Careers of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as Referenced in Literature

Download or read book The Careers of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as Referenced in Literature written by Henryk Hoffmann and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Careers of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as Referenced in Literature" is a study of the perception of these two Hollywood megastars and their work, as presented in the text and context of references and allusions found in world literature. This book also aims to establish the impact factor of the two actors and their major films, as well as to provide extensive data for further studies of the complex and bilateral relationships between film and literature. The pertinent quotations have been extracted from over 150 works—novels, short stories, plays, poems and some nonfiction biographies and memoirs (excluding those focused on film celebrities)—by more than 120 authors. The main body of the book consists of two parts, each devoted to one actor and each having five identical sections. In the first section, references to the actor’s films are discussed while the second section presents references to the actor himself. The third section shows the complete list of references found to the actor and his films, including references not mentioned in the first two sections—either because of their relative insignificance, the lack of an English translation in case of foreign-language works or repetitiveness and/or abundance in a given work. The fourth section offers the credits of the films referenced, and the fifth section presents the actor’s complete monographic bibliography. The third part of the book, ‘Epilogue: Final Remarks and Conclusions,’ provides an analysis and classification of all the references and allusions presented in the main body, and it elaborates on the friendship of the two actors. College professors and students interested in film studies, particularly film analysis and criticism, film perception and film genres, will find this book of great interest. It will also appeal to people interested in biographical books on movie personalities and movie fans, especially those interested in westerns, film noir and the careers of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.

Book Dictionary of Louisiana French

Download or read book Dictionary of Louisiana French written by Albert Valdman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Louisiana French (DLF) provides the richest inventory of French vocabulary in Louisiana and reflects precisely the speech of the period from 1930 to the present. This dictionary describes the current usage of French-speaking peoples in the five broad regions of South Louisiana: the coastal marshes, the banks of the Mississippi River, the central area, the north, and the western prairie. Data were collected during interviews from at least five persons in each of twenty-four areas in these regions. In addition to the data collected from fieldwork, the dictionary contains material compiled from existing lexical inventories, from texts published after 1930, and from archival recordings. The new authoritative resource, the DLF not only contains the largest number of words and expressions but also provides the most complete information available for each entry. Entries include the word in the conventional French spelling, the pronunciation (including attested variants), the part of speech classification, the English equivalent, and the word's use in common phrases. The DLF features a wealth of illustrative examples derived from fieldwork and textual sources and identification of the parish where the entry was collected or the source from which it was compiled. An English-to-Louisiana French index enables readers to find out how particular notions would be expressed in la Louisiane .
