Book excerpt: A bestselling literary sensation in Brazil, a powerful debut short-story collection about favela life in Rio de Janeiro In The Sun on My Head, Geovani Martins recounts the experiences of boys growing up in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the early years of the twenty-first century. Drawing on his childhood and adolescence, Martins uses the rhythms and slang of his neighborhood dialect to capture the texture of life in the slums, where every day is shadowed by a ubiquitous drug culture, the constant threat of the police, and the confines of poverty, violence, and racial oppression. And yet these are also stories of friendship, romance, and momentary relief, as in “Rolézim,” where a group of teenagers head to the beach. Other stories, all uncompromising in their realism and yet diverse in narrative form, explore the changes that occur when militarized police occupy the favelas in the lead-up to the World Cup, the cycles of violence in the narcotics trade, and the feelings of invisibility that define the realities of so many in Rio’s underclass. The Sun on My Head is a work of great talent and sensitivity, a daring evocation of life in the favelas by a rising star rooted in the community he portrays.

Book excerpt: The Quiet War is over. The city states of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, founded by descendants of refugees from Earth’s repressive regimes, the Outers, have fallen to the Three Powers Alliance of Greater Brazil, the European Union, and the Pacific Community. A century of enlightenment, rational utopianism and exploration of new ways of being human has fallen dark. Outers are herded into prison camps and forced to collaborate in the systematic plundering of their great archives of scientific and technical knowledge, while Earth’s forces loot their cities and settlements and ships, and plan a final solution to the ‘Outer problem.’ But Earth’s victory is fragile, and riven by vicious internal politics. While seeking out and trying to anatomise the strange gardens abandoned in place by the Outers’ greatest genius, Avernus, the gene wizard Sri Hong-Owen is embroiled in the plots and counterplots of the family that employs her. The diplomat Loc Ifrahim soon discovers that profiting from victory isn’t as easy as he thought. And on Earth, in Greater Brazil, the democratic traditions preserved and elaborated by the Outers have infected a population eager to escape the tyranny of the great families who rule them. Meanwhile, in the outer reaches of the Solar System, a rag-taggle group of refugees struggle to preserve the last of the old ideals. And on Triton, fanatical members of a cabal prepare for a final battle that threatens to shatter the future of the human species. After a conflict fought to contain the expansionist, posthuman ambitions of the Outers, the future is as uncertain as ever. Only one thing is clear. No one can escape the consequences of war -- especially the victors.

  • Pages : 121 pages

Download or read book The Book written by Fran Kusters and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book is a fictional novel presented as ‘a story within a story’, because the main character is indeed a book that, guiding us through the tale, refines the author’s words to convey them in a more direct and explicit way. The novel represents in fact the author’s conscience, who uses the book as a means to tell not one, but several stories with a single thread, linked together by the theme of the journey and the journey of self-discovery. The book shows us several places visited by the author, which are very different from each other. The theme of the journey is dealt with in the various chapters that go from ‘beginning’ to ‘end’. The reader abandons himself in this journey of words and letters written on paper and he is soon transported into another life and another reality. Fran Kusters was born in 1954. She is a Belgian writer and visual artist, but she also gives Chakra classes. Twelve years ago she moved from Belgium to the South West of Turkey. This decision meant a huge change in her personal and professional life and influenced her writing. The inspiration for her work came from her discoveries during travels, from nature and from meeting new people, but above all, life is her never-ending inspiration. Even though she is a French and Dutch native speaker, she took the challenge of writing her novel in English.
