Book Under the Boards

Download or read book Under the Boards written by Jeffrey Lane and published by Bison Books. This book was released on 2007-05-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story of basketball lives as much off the court as on the hardwood; it is about politics and race and cultural clashes as heated as a final-four buzzer-beater. This story unfolds in all its gritty and colorful detail in Under the Boards. From the birth of the Larry Bird legend to the ascendancy of a hip-hop-infused NBA to the backlash against bling and the contemporary American game, Jeffrey Lane traces the emergence of a new culture of basketball, complete with competing values, attitudes, aesthetics, and racial and economic tensions. The revolution Lane describes resonates in the way Latrell Sprewell’s assault on his coach forever changed NBA power relations; in legendary coach Bob Knight’s entanglement in high school basketball history; in the dramatic shift in attitude toward European players; in the impact of the deaths of two rappers on rookie Allen Iverson’s career; and in conflicting cultural models rooted in ideals of black masculinity and white nostalgia. In these moments Lane’s book documents a profound change in basketball and in American culture over the last thirty years.

Book Back to the Drawing Board

Download or read book Back to the Drawing Board written by Colin B. Carter and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2003-10-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business scandals from Enron to WorldCom have escalated concerns about corporate governance into a full-blown crisis. Institutional investors and legislators have dominated the debate and enacted important changes in corporate accounting and other areas. But Colin B. Carter and Jay W. Lorsch say that we must now focus on the performance of corporate boards. This timely book argues that boards are being pressed to perform unrealistic duties given their traditional structure, processes, and membership. Carter and Lorsch propose a strategic redesign of boards--making them better attuned to their oversight, decision-making, and advisory roles--to enable directors to meet 21st century challenges successfully. Based on the authors' deep expertise and longtime experience working with boards around the world, and on a probing survey of CEOs, Carter and Lorsch help boards to develop a realistic value proposition customized to the company they serve. The authors explore the core dilemmas and responsibilities boards face and outline a framework for designing the most effective structure, makeup, size, and culture. This book provides a candid account of the current state of boards and points the way in a time of crisis and change.

Download or read book Women on Boards written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ahead of the EU's expected announcement of legislation to tackle gender inequality in the corporate world, the European Union Committee concludes that introducing mandatory quotas for the number of women on EU boards would generate negative perceptions amongst women and business leaders and would not address the root causes of inequality. Whilst the Committee agrees there is a leadership role for the EU in furthering the cause of increased equality in the boardroom, quotas would risk setting back voluntary efforts without achieving broader gains, and the Government should strongly oppose any such measure. The Committee instead calls on the European Commission to bring forward measures to monitor the number of women in senior positions on an EU-wide basis. The Commission should also facilitate self-regulatory efforts in Member States which can highlight good and bad performers, giving voluntary efforts a chance to succeed, before quotas are considered.

Book Boards Governance and Value Creation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of boards in corporate governance? How should they be structured in order to maximize value creation? This 2007 book looks at the role of boards in a variety of different countries and contexts, from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations. It explores the working style of boards and how they can best achieve their task expectations. Board effectiveness and value creation are shown to be the results of interactions between owners, managers, board members and other actors. Board behaviour is thus seen to be a result of strategizing, norms, board leadership, and the decision-making culture within the boardroom. Combining value creation, behavioural and ethical approaches to the study of boards, this work offers a systematic framework which will be of value to graduate students and researchers in the field of corporate social responsibility and business ethics.
