Book MCing a Message

  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book MCing a Message written by S Scott Jr and published by S Scott Jr. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hip hop saved my life. Those three words aren't an exaggeration. This music gave me purpose when I was struggling to find direction. These beats and rhymes kept me grounded when chaos reigned. And carving out my own lane as an MC defined my personal legend. This is the story of how I found healing through poetic prose, peace in the pulses of production, and power by opening up veins to spit pure passion. From early childhood days rocking hand-me-down boomboxes to underground open mics toiling in obscurity. On to the university of hard knocks honing a live wire sound and style unrelenting. Charting an independent path paralleled only by my outsized dreams. The pages herein are a glimpse behind the curtain of construction. Documenting the artistic arcs and intimate angles of an emerging iconoclast. I script these lyrical memoirs from the epicenter of insight. To bring understanding from the inside out. This is the backstory behind beats that still bang in cars coast to coast. And words that echo universal truths across generations. My aim is to inspire and reveal the grind behind the glory. How love for language and uncanny cadences combined with destiny. The journey of a thousand miles started with one word. A rupture delivered on some unassuming night. When my soul spoke unfiltered and honest. And that voice found an audience eager to listen. This is more than just an autobiography. These verses vow to speak to the seekers and the skeptics alike. I etched these lines to uplift the heads and offer Concrete roses for the readers to reflect. Each chapter, a masterclass. Every page, a thesis to inspire exceptionalism. So join me at the intersection of past, present and future histories. As we celebrate how hip hop provides catharsis and charts caminos for its willing students. Now turn the page and let's rebuild this crucial culture one righteous rhyme at a time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What many readers have wished for is now reality: a richly descriptive ethnography of street rappers. Blowing up refers to rappers dream of becoming rich and famous, or, at the least, successful as recording artists. Jooyoung Lee adds a shape to his story of Flawliis, VerBS, E. Crimsin, Psychosiz, and Tick-a-Lott: how do young black men from the inner city navigate their twenties? Blowin Up is a vibrant look at the young-adult stage of people who grow up in the shadow of gangs, dead-end jobs, and a glittering entertainment industry (the setting is Los Angeles). No other account of ghetto youth affords us this particular angle of vision. Lee discovers that in South Central L.A., rap can create bridges that bring young men together with peers from different neighborhoods (underscoring the importance of a healthy alternative to gangs). A rapper s underground artistic career is rooted in battle skills and crowd appeal, and, to boot, is meritocratic (whereas mainstream career success is based on branding, timing, funding, networks, and gimmicks). Rapping is an embodied artit takes much practice to learn, and requires body skills in dance, stance, and voice. Lee homes in on the skills and personalities of individual rappers, but he also illuminates the complex hip-hop scene around which these young men orbit, giving us detailed understandings of how young men navigate the intricate, tightly-wound world of tragedy and opportunity in the city. Lee balances the prospect of risk and existential uncertainty for youth entering a young adult life-stage with the hope for a big break in forging an entertainment career. In the end, Lee shows us how the arts can shape the lives of at-risk youth."

Book I Got Something to Say

Download or read book I Got Something to Say written by Matthew Oware and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-11 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do millennial rappers in the United States say in their music? This timely and compelling book answers this question by decoding the lyrics of over 700 songs from contemporary rap artists. Using innovative research techniques, Matthew Oware reveals how emcees perpetuate and challenge gendered and racialized constructions of masculinity, femininity, and sexuality. Male and female artists litter their rhymes with misogynistic and violent imagery. However, men also express a full range of emotions, from arrogance to vulnerability, conveying a more complex manhood than previously acknowledged. Women emphatically state their desires while embracing a more feminist approach. Even LGBTQ artists stake their claim and express their sexuality without fear. Finally, in the age of Black Lives Matter and the presidency of Donald J. Trump, emcees forcefully politicize their music. Although complicated and contradictory in many ways, rap remains a powerful medium for social commentary.

Book Rap on Trial

    Book Details:
  • Author : Erik Nielson
  • Publisher : The New Press
  • Release : 2019-11-12
  • ISBN : 1620973413
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book Rap on Trial written by Erik Nielson and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking exposé about the alarming use of rap lyrics as criminal evidence to convict and incarcerate young men of color Should Johnny Cash have been charged with murder after he sang, "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die"? Few would seriously subscribe to this notion of justice. Yet in 2001, a rapper named Mac whose music had gained national recognition was convicted of manslaughter after the prosecutor quoted liberally from his album Shell Shocked. Mac was sentenced to thirty years in prison, where he remains. And his case is just one of many nationwide. Over the last three decades, as rap became increasingly popular, prosecutors saw an opportunity: they could present the sometimes violent, crime-laden lyrics of amateur rappers as confessions to crimes, threats of violence, evidence of gang affiliation, or revelations of criminal motive—and judges and juries would go along with it. Detectives have reopened cold cases on account of rap lyrics and videos alone, and prosecutors have secured convictions by presenting such lyrics and videos of rappers as autobiography. Now, an alarming number of aspiring rappers are imprisoned. No other form of creative expression is treated this way in the courts. Rap on Trial places this disturbing practice in the context of hip hop history and exposes what's at stake. It's a gripping, timely exploration at the crossroads of contemporary hip hop and mass incarceration.
