Download or read book God Rock Inc written by Andrew Mall and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular music in the twenty-first century is increasingly divided into niche markets. How do fans, musicians, and music industry executives define their markets’ boundaries? What happens when musicians cross those boundaries? What can Christian music teach us about commercial popular music? In God Rock, Inc., Andrew Mall considers the aesthetic, commercial, ethical, and social boundaries of Christian popular music, from the late 1960s, when it emerged, through the 2010s. Drawing on ethnographic research, historical archives, interviews with music industry executives, and critical analyses of recordings, concerts, and music festival performances, Mall explores the tensions that have shaped this evolving market and frames broader questions about commerce, ethics, resistance, and crossover in music that defines itself as outside the mainstream.

Download or read book One Nation Under Gods written by Peter Manseau and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking new look at the story of America At the heart of the nation's spiritual history are audacious and often violent scenes. But the Puritans and the shining city on the hill give us just one way to understand the United States. Rather than recite American history from a Christian vantage point, Peter Manseau proves that what really happened is worth a close, fresh look. Thomas Jefferson himself collected books on all religions and required that the brand new Library of Congress take his books, since Americans needed to consider the "twenty gods or no god" he famously noted were revered by his neighbors. Looking at the Americans who believed in these gods, Manseau fills in America's story of itself, from the persecuted "witches" at Salem and who they really were, to the persecuted Buddhists in WWII California, from spirituality and cults in the '60s to the recent presidential election where both candidates were for the first time non-traditional Christians. One Nation, Under Gods shows how much more there is to the history we tell ourselves, right back to the country's earliest days. Dazzling in its scope and sweep, it is an American history unlike any you've read.

For more than a thousand years, Eastern Christians have used their hands and hearts to create icons, proclaiming God’s reality in a visible–and breathtakingly beautiful–way. This ancient art is enjoying a renewed interest in the West, as people of faith create icons and use them to meditate on mysteries for which there are no words. A Brush with God is a guide to painting icons and using them in prayer. Written with warmth and energy, it describes the history of icons and examines why they’ve been a spiritual tool for so many centuries. Written from a uniquely Western perspective, the book guides artists–from novices to professionals–through the process of icon painting, using traditional techniques but employing contemporary materials. Included are eight full-color plates of the artist’s icons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly interdisciplinary work, linguist Anna Wierzbicka casts new light on the words of Jesus by taking her well-known semantic theory of "universal human concepts"- concepts which are intuitively understandable and self-explanatory across languages-and bringing it to bear on Jesus' parables and the Sermon on the Mount. Her approach results in strikingly novel interpretations of the Gospels. Written in dialogue with other biblical commentators, What Did Jesus Mean? is both scholarly rigorous yet accessible.

This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever felt stuck? Have you been praying but feel like you're not getting any traction? Do you ever feel like you just need to start all over, hit the reset button? This book can walk you through the process of uncovering and discovering what is blocking you from living a life filled with the fruits of the Spirit. With a simple chart of nineteen instincts and emotions that can get out of balance, it's possible to identify key areas to recalibrate, in order to claim the joy that Christ gifted us with. The middle column of the chart illustrates a balanced, joyful, and fruitful life, while the rest of the chart looks at the signs along the way that indicate we're out of balance. There are key elements of our faith that can help us to move toward this balance: Getting to know our Savior better. Donning the full armor that God provides us with to battle our very real enemy. Looking with eyes wide-open at the temptation we face today. Centering our lives on Christ. Demystifying and using prayer. A closer look at these elements can help us reset, leading us to a life free of the bondage of emotions and instincts that are out of control.

Download or read book The Living under God s Governmental Administration in His Salvation and the Provisions of the Divine Life written by Witness Lee and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Epistles, Peter emphasizes God’s government. Whereas Paul’s ministry speaks mainly of the Body of Christ and John’s ministry speaks mainly of the house of God, Peter’s ministry speaks mainly of the kingdom of God, that is, of all matters related to God’s governmental administration. His Epistles substantially and comprehensively speak of how God’s hand in His governmental administration accomplishes His desire in us, and they speak deeply and with much application to our actual condition. If we want to know God in our practical living and walk and know God’s hand and His work upon us, we must know the content of the Epistles of Peter.

Download or read book Resilience in a VUCA world written by Annette Potgieter and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on how humans deal with adversity, especially in uncertain and turbulent times, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Resilience theory has become popular in scholarly discourse, and the term is difficult to define as so many opinions exist. This book aims to engage critically with resilience theory as a scholarly debate from the unique vantage point of the world of social work as well as theology. This specific aspect of originality contributes to the generation of new knowledge in the broad field of social sciences and humanities. The inception of the book stems from an interdisciplinary conference held at Hugenote Kollege, Wellington, where scholars from social work as well as theology engaged in a discourse on resilience. Professor Adrian van Breda, a specialist in resilience theory and from the social work department of the University of Johannesburg, was one of the keynote speakers, inspiring scholars to understand what is meant by resilience. Professor Yolanda Dreyer from the University of Pretoria and a seasoned theologian and prolific writer on trauma and resilience, was also a keynote speaker, providing insights from a theological perspective. The collaboration between these two fields of thought is unique and rendered new insights into engaging with resilience. Different methodologies and perspectives from researchers are prevalent as contributors are from different scholarly fields. The book ranges from linguistical, liturgical, philosophical, practical, autoethnographical, anthropological, sociological, and online methodological approaches contributing to ways to deal with traumatic, turbulent and trying times. The book is divided into four main themes that stood out from the results obtained at the conference, namely, (1) religious imagination and resilience, (2) communities and resilience, (3) online teaching and resilience, and (4) the resilience of philosophical questions.

Download or read book Wide Awake in God s World written by Graham D. Stanton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an expressivist culture, effective engagement must acknowledge teenagers’ freedom to choose their own spiritual path. Yet, in an evangelical theology, faithful formation must hold on to biblical authority. As we seek to engage young people with the Bible, key questions need to be explored. Such questions include: how can pedagogical freedom be affirmed without undermining theological authority; and how can authority be asserted without diminishing personal freedom? This study explores a freedom–authority dialectic in theological dialogue with the educational philosophy of Maxine Greene. Greene’s reflection on the arts and the imagination are brought into conversation with insights from Charles Taylor, Garret Green, and Nicholas Wolterstorff. As a work of practical theology, the book concludes with a framework to shape the purpose, content, and values for Bible engagement in contemporary youth ministry.
