Download or read book State Policy Choices written by Sheldon Danziger and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With one foot in the rustbelt and the other in the depressed farm economy, Wisconsin, like other states, has plenty of problems. Balancing state expenditures and revenues, expanding economic development, containing medical costs, distributing resources to the needy, reducing financial stress on farmers, and responsibly exploiting natural resources, all are issues discussed in this volume by a variety of experts in a broad range of disciplines. Reductions in federal expenditures have forced important decisions on state and local governments. With its progressive heritage, Wisconsin has often served as a model of wise policymaking. This book is divided into three major sections: Budgets, Finances, and Conditions for Economic Development; Human Need and Human Services; and Agricultural and Natural Resources Policy. An introduction by the editors delineates the unifying themes. Although the issues are all set in the Wisconsin context, many of the problems, proposed solutions, and the innovative programs described in the volume will be of interest to those involved in or studying state and local policymaking in other states.
Download or read book A Shared Destiny written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Shared Destiny is the fourth in a series of six reports on the problems of uninsurance in the United States. This report examines how the quality, quantity, and scope of community health services can be adversely affected by having a large or growing uninsured population. It explores the overlapping financial and organizational basis of health services delivery to uninsured and insured populations, the effects of community uninsurance on access to health care locally, and the potential spillover effects on a community's economy and the health of its citizens. The committee believes it is both mistaken and dangerous to assume that the persistence of a sizable uninsured population in the United States harms only those who are uninsured.

Download or read book The Fragile Middle Class written by Teresa A. Sullivan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have so many middle-class Americans encountered so much financial trouble? In this classic analysis of hard-pressed families, the authors discover that financial stability for many middle-class Americans is all too fragile. The authors consider the changing cultural and economic factors that threaten financial security and what they imply for the future vitality of the middle class. A new preface examines the persistent and new threats that have emerged since the original publication. “[A] fascinating, alarming study. . . . [This] chilling diagnosis of middle-class affliction demonstrates that we all may be only a job loss, medical problem or credit card indulgence away from the downward spiral leading to bankruptcy.”—Publishers Weekly "A well-designed and carefully executed study."—Andrew Greeley, University of Chicago "The Fragile Middle Class, a well-written work of social science that is about as gripping as the genre gets, forces us to reevaluate notions about consumerism."—American Prospect
