Book excerpt: Not all war heroes have had their stories told. Many lived and died in anonymity. Uncommon Warrior, the sequel to Michael’s Messengers, continues to recount the many extraordinary World War II accomplishments of ordinary airmen during the Battle of Britain and the liberation of Europe. Jack Meadows, a Polish born, naturalized American, embodies the countless acts of selfless courage as a fighter pilot. He symbolizes the untold stories of airmen who flew both conventional and unconventional operations. As a 19-year old naturalized American, Jack returned to his native Poland to fly with the Polish Air Force in 1939. He fled to England where he became the RAF’s leading ace and the youngest wing commander. He led the RAF’s Polish Air Force wing in 1943 and the Allied air forces’ elimination of the Luftwaffe threat over Normandy prior to D-Day. Jack’s successes in the skies over England and Europe were not matched by his life on the ground. His attempts to find true love were thwarted when the women in his life abandoned him or met an untimely demise. He fought personal demons by taking risks beyond the norm, even for a combat pilot. The end of the war should have been the beginning of Jack’s new life. He finally found his true love, was engaged to be married, and had an unlimited future as a political figure in his adopted country; Great Britain. But fate stepped in again to thwart Jack’s quest for love and tranquility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncommon Valor from Dwight Jon Zimmerman and John D. Gresham presents a fascinating look at six of our bravest soldiers and the highest military decoration awarded in this country. Since the Vietnam War ended in 1973, the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award for valor, has been presented to only eight men for their actions "above and beyond the call of duty." Six of the eight were young men who had fought in the current war in Iraq, Afghanistan, or both. All of these medals were awarded posthumously, as all had made the choice to give their lives so that their comrades might live. Uncommon Valor answers the searing question of who these six young soldiers were, and dramatically details how they found themselves in life-or-death situations, and why they responded as they did. For the first time, this book also provides a comprehensive history of the Medal of Honor itself—one marred by controversies, scandals, and theft. Using an extraordinary range of sources, including interviews with family members and friends, teammates and superiors in the military, personal letters, blogs posted within hours of events, personal and official videos and newly declassified documents, Uncommon Valor is a compelling and important work that recounts incredible acts of heroism and lays bare the ultimate sacrifice of our bravest soldiers.

Book excerpt: The idea of a warrior who shouts his warfare is unusual, but the idea of warriors shouting for victory has a sound basis in God's Word. Shouting for victory is a powerful weapon in fighting the good fight of faith. This book will probably not resonate with you if you do not know Jesus as your Lord and Savior. But I firmly believe that if you?ll read it anyway and relax your tendency toward unbelief, you will find the Savior that your heart craves; for He is here and ready to receive you.

Providing a rare view of Indian attitudes and strategies in war and peace, Hall deepens our understanding of Native Americans and the complex roles they played in the nation's history.

Book The Anti Warrior

Download or read book The Anti Warrior written by Milt Felsen and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1937 thirty-six nervous young men dressed in ill-fitting blue suits, wearing berets, and carrying identical black valises, were given tickets for an American Export Lines ship. They were told to conduct themselves as ordinary tourists, to be "inconspicuous." They were volunteers for the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, traveling the French underground to join in the fight against Franco. Among them was Milt Felsen, a young New Yorker and radical antiwar activist on the University of Iowa campus who had decided that fascism had to be opposed. Some of these young men never made it to their destination. But Milt Felsen did, beginning a march across the Pyrenees which was only the first of his many battles and adventures. Told with uncommon wit and verve, this memoir of war and resistance is a stirring account of Felsen's involvement in two decades of battle. Surprisingly, this is a spirited and even funny book, infused with Felsen's unbeatable personality. After the Spanish Civil War, Felsen helped form the O.S.S. in World War II. Taken prisoner of war, he escaped in his inimitable style during a 1,200-mile prisoner-of-war march and drove out of Nazi Germany in a Mercedes-Benz. He returned to the United States more convinced than ever of war's insanity and its extreme human cost

Book Materiality and Consumption in the Bronze Age Mediterranean

Download or read book Materiality and Consumption in the Bronze Age Mediterranean written by Louise Steel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of cultural contacts in the East Mediterranean has long been recognized and is the focus of ongoing international research. Fieldwork in the Aegean, Egypt, Cyprus, and the Levant continues to add to our understanding of the nature of this contact and its social and economic significance, particularly to the cultures of the Aegean. Despite sophisticated discussion of the archaeological evidence, in particular on the part of Aegean and Mediterranean archaeologists, there has been little systematic attempt to incorporate anthropological perspectives on materiality and exchange into archaeological narratives of this material. This book addresses that gap and integrates anthropological discourse on contact, examining exchange systems, the gift, notions of geographical distance and power, colonization, and hybridization. Furthermore, it develops a social narrative of culture contact in the Mediterranean context, illustrating the reasons communities chose to engage in international exchange, and how this impacted the construction of identities throughout the region. While traditional archaeologies in the East Mediterranean have tended to be reductive in their approach to material culture and how it was produced, used, and exchanged, this book reviews current research on material culture, focusing on issues such as the biography of objects, inalienable possessions, and hybridization - exploring how these issues can further illuminate the material world of the communities of the Bronze Age Mediterranean.

Book Workplace Warrior

Download or read book Workplace Warrior written by Jordan Goldrich and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a leader who has been called abrasive, aggressive, or even a bully? This book is written for—rather than about—you. You have probably noticed that many, if not most authors and speakers who deal with this subject refer to leaders like you with demeaning names, because they think you need to be more respectful. Jordan Goldrich challenges this irony—or perhaps hypocrisy—by recognizing that, in reality, you possess a warrior spirit that is crucial to the success of organizations in our current VUCA environment (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity). Goldrich acknowledges that (just like himself) these leaders are imperfect human beings whose leadership or communication styles can sometimes create a negative impact. But he also acknowledges an important truth—that they bring unique value to the workplace and to society. His challenge to you, in this book, is to become a better leader by measuring yourself against the greatest warriors on the planet: the Navy SEALs, the Green Berets, and the rest of the special operations community—because you have something in common with them. Like you, these heroes have an uncommon desire to succeed, are committed to taking charge, and are focused on accomplishing the mission. In addition, they commit to humbly serve and to place the welfare and security of others before their own. Goldrich shows you how to do the same. Some of the author’s advice revolves around the clever use of the phrase, “The Least You Can Do.” If you are interested in doing the least you can do to be both authentic and protect yourself in a politically correct, over-protective world, you will find what you need in Workplace Warrior. If, on the other hand, you want to do the least you can do in the sense that it is the right thing to do, you will find resources to authentically take your leadership to a higher level. Human resources executives, executive coaches, and people who work with and for leaders labeled as abrasive or bullies will find a unique perspective on these leaders’ motivations and mindsets—and will then be able to do their part in building collaborative relationships with their colleagues.
