This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a small record of how things were done in a particular time period in the Marine Corps training history. In order to win, you have to put the best team together for that period or era. In the '60s, the techniques and tactics worked for the events that were going on at that time. What didn't work were the procedures we had to follow that were given to us by the politicians who knew nothing about the work we had to do. I'm sure they've changed in the last sixty years and will continue to evolve until they are no longer needed. I mean no disrespect to my beloved corps then, now, or in the future. If I were to criticize their procedures then and now, I would say that back then they took the so-called bad boys and now they want you with no flaws so that they don't have to waste time taking the errant behavior out of the individual in order to put their wants and needs and desires into him. They don't want to do the heavy lifting anymore. We haven't won a war since the middle forties, so I wouldn't know, but I've been told by people who were there that, in the end, it is the individual marine with a rifle and fixed bayonet who closes with and kills his enemy. That takes a bad boy who is used to doing the heavy lifting and the dirty work, but we have special units in almost every branch of the service that are trained specifically to do the heavy lifting and the dirty work. Semper Fi.

Book excerpt: Richard Marcinko's revelations in his explosive #1 bestselling autobiography, Rogue Warrior, reverberated through the highest levels of the US government. But, bound by government restrictions, he was forbidden to tell the whole story. The answer was fiction. First came Rogue Warrior: Red Cell, the take-no-prisoners bestseller with Marcinko as hero. Now the Rogue Warrior's back and he's hotter than ever, in a knockout novel of courage and nonstop action. In Portsmouth, England, an aircraft carrier has been sabotaged, killing the American Chief of Naval Operations, one of the few friends the Rogue Warrior had left in the Navy. Marcinko discovers a holy war is brewing—a violent religious movement, encircling the globe and zeroing in on the West. Defeating that menace will be the supreme test of Marcinko's GREEN TEAM, a top-secret unit operating outside the U.S. military's chain of command. But in Washington, the political wolves select Dick Marcinko as their sacrificial lamb. For the Rogue Warrior it's time to declare a holy war of his own. The enemy may have the ultimate weapon, but GREEN TEAM has Marcinko's Tenth Commandment of SpecWar: There Are No Rules —Thou Shalt Win at All Cost!

Download or read book Journalism and Truth in an Age of Social Media written by James E. Katz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Truth qualities of journalism are under intense scrutiny in today's world. Journalistic scandals have eroded public confidence in mainstream media while pioneering news media compete to satisfy the public's appetite for news. Still worse is the specter of "fake news" that looms over media and political systems that underpin everything from social stability to global governance. This volume aims to illuminate the contentious media landscape to help journalism students, scholars, and professionals understand contemporary conditions and arm them to deal with a spectrum of new developments ranging from technology and politics to best practices. Fake news is among the greatest of these concerns, and can encompass everything from sarcastic or ironic humor to bot-generated, made-up stories. It can also include the pernicious transmission of selected, biased facts, the use of incomplete or misleadingly selective framing of stories, and photographs that editorially convey certain characteristics. This edited volume contextualizes the current "fake news problem." Yet it also offers a larger perspective on what seems to be uniquely modern, computer-driven problems. We must remember that we have lived with the problem of people having to identify, characterize, and communicate the truth about the world around them for millennia. Rather than identify a single culprit for disseminating misinformation, this volume examines how news is perceived and identified, how news is presented to the public, and how the public responds to news. It considers social media's effect on the craft of journalism, as well as the growing role of algorithms, big data, and automatic content-production regimes. As an edited collection, this volume gathers leading scholars in the fields of journalism and communication studies, philosophy, and the social sciences to address critical questions of how we should understand journalism's changing landscape as it relates to fundamental questions about the role of truth and information in society.

Book excerpt: "ROUTE STEP - Semper Facetious" is a rollicking recollection of service related memories and the fellow Marines, friends and family that helped make them famous. ROUTE STEP marches across decades, from the recruiting office that began my Marine Corps journey, to fun-filled shipboard and shorebased adventures alike. ROUTE STEP intoduces a wonderful cast of characters that left an indelible smile in my mind and heart. It is a tongue-and-cheek tribute to my comrades, a lavishly embellished record of days gone by. ROUTE STEP introduces the likes of John Robichaux, Al Garcia, Todd Baker, Elden Zirkle, Claudia Novick, and Crystal Myslinski to name but a few. They are not famous people, not in the Hollywood sense of the term, but they are wonderful people, fun people, people that you ought to meet. Finally, ROUTE STEP marches into retirement where it pays tribute to my wife's inability to hold her liquor. It examines professional wrestling and relationships with associates. It looks at foul fowl hairdos, considers man's bestfriends, and bemoans the onslaught of my golden years. ROUTE STEP, March!
Download or read book A Time to Fight written by Jim Webb and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-05-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’m the only person in the history of Virginia elected to statewide office with a Union card, two Purple Hearts, and three tattoos." Jim Webb—the bestselling author and now the celebrated, outspoken U.S. Senator from Virginia—presents a clear-eyed, hard-hitting plan of attack for putting government to work for the people, rather than special interests, and for restoring the country's standing around the world. Infused with the intelligence, force, and firebrand style that has earned Senator Jim Webb enormous national attention from his earlest days in office, A Time to Fight offers a thorough and provocative assessment of the thorniest issues Americans face today, along with cogent solutions drawn from Webb's lifetime of experience as a much-decorated Marine, a widely traveled, award-winning journalist and novelist, a highly placed member of the Reagan administration, a Senator with a son who fought as a Marine in Iraq and, perhaps most important, a proud scion of America's vast but frequently ignored working class. Webb exposes how America has entered a dangerous, unprecedented cycle of seemingly unsolvable unknowns. Our economic policies, particularly in this age of globalization, have produced widely divergent results leading to a country calcifying along class lines. Our demographic makeup has been altered dramatically and is set to keep on changing, through both legal and illegal immigration. Our editorialists and politicians talk about the American dream, and some urge us to bring democracy to the rest of the world. But more than two million Americans are now in prison, by far the highest incarceration rate in the so-called advanced world. Our foreign policy is confused, without clear direction; increasingly vulnerable to such largely unexamined long-term threats as China's emerging power while it has become bogged down in the never-ending struggles of the Middle East. As this drift toward societal regression has taken place, America's leadership has largely been paralyzed, unable or unwilling to stop the slide. "Where are the leaders?" Webb asks. "Has our political process become so compromised by powerful interest groups and the threat of character assassination that even the best among us will not dare to speak honestly about the solutions that might bring us back to common sense and fundamental fairness?" Through vivid personal narratives of the struggles members of his family faced, and citing the courageous actions of presidents ranging from Andrew Jackson to Teddy Roosevelt to Dwight Eisenhower, A Time to Fight provides specific, viable ideas for restoring fairness to our economic system, correcting the direction of national security efforts, ending America's military occupation of Iraq, and developing greater government accountability. Webb brings a fresh perspective to political dynamics that have shaped our country. His stirring, populist manifesto calls upon voters to make the choices that will change America for the better in this election season.
