Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Remus: Or Mr. Fox, Mr. Rabbit, and Mr. Terrapin MY dear frost: I am expected to supply a preface for this new edition of my first book - to advance from behind the curtain, as it were, and make a fresh bow to the public that has dealt with Uncle Remus in so gentle and generous a fashion. For this event the lights are to be rekindled, and I am expected to respond in some formal way to an encore that marks the fifteenth anniversary of the book. There have been other editions - how many I do not remember but this is to be an entirely new one, except as to the matter: new type, new pictures, and new binding. Book Uncle Remus and His Friends

Download or read book Uncle Remus and His Friends written by Joel Chandler Harris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Remus and His Friends: Old Plantation Stories, Songs, and Ballads With Sketches of Negro Character A genial literary critic, of Boston, looking over the field of letters in this republic not many months ago, felt compelled to give utterance to a note of depression. What he saw was pleasing, perhaps, but not inspiring. The landscape appeared to be full of the impotent commotion that is seen in the neighborhood of ant-hills just before a shower. Small men were trying to play instruments much too large for them, while others were fiddling away with futile earnestness on one string. To crown all, Provinciality, with an amplitude at once motherly and American, spread her homespun frock over the scene. There was nothing new, nothing hopeful, and even those who had given signs of promise were returning to barren imitations of their early successes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tar-Baby: And Other Rhymes of Uncle Remus With the exception of the tar-baby story and one 0th: all the folk-lore stories herein embodied are new, having come into my hands from various sources during the past ten years. The tar-baby story has been thrown into a rhymed form for the purpose of presenting and preserving what seems to be the genuine version. Those who care for the narratives themselves will no doubt overlook the somewhat monotonous character of the verse. When Uncle Remus sets himself to produce new stories in a form that would seem to be alien to his methods, it is inevitable that his efforts should move along the line of least resistance, which in English is the iambic four-beat movement, the simplest form of narrative verse. Under the circumstances, and in view of his environment, it is natural that he should pay small attention to the misleading rules of the professors of prosody, who seem to have not the slightest notion of the science of English verse. His instinctive love of melody, and his appreciation of the simplest rhythmical move ment, would lead him to ignore syllables and accents and to depend wholly on the time-movement that is inseparable from English verse. Book excerpt: I am advised by my publishers that this book is to be included in their catalogue of humorous publications, and this friendly warning gives me an opportunity to say that however humorous it may be in effect, its intention is perfectly serious; and, even if it were otherwise, it seems to me that a volume written wholly in dialect must have its solemn, not to say melancholy, features. With respect to the Folk-Lore series, my purpose has been to preserve the legends themselves in their original simplicity, and to wed them permanently to the quaint dialect-if, indeed, it can be called a dialect-through the medium of which they have become a part of the domestic history of every Southern family; and I have endeavored to give to the whole a genuine flavor of the old plantation...
