Book excerpt: I am advised by my publishers that this book is to be included in their catalogue of humorous publications, and this friendly warning gives me an opportunity to say that however humorous it may be in effect, its intention is perfectly serious; and, even if it were otherwise, it seems to me that a volume written wholly in dialect must have its solemn, not to say melancholy, features. With respect to the Folk-Lore series, my purpose has been to preserve the legends themselves in their original simplicity, and to wed them permanently to the quaint dialect-if, indeed, it can be called a dialect-through the medium of which they have become a part of the domestic history of every Southern family; and I have endeavored to give to the whole a genuine flavor of the old plantation...

Book Uncle Remus Stories Annotated

Download or read book Uncle Remus Stories Annotated written by Joel Chandler Harris and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncle Remus Stories (1906) by Joel Chandler Harris (1845-1908), with illustratrions. Uncle Remus is a collection of animal stories, songs, and oral folklore, collected from Southern United States African-Americans. Many of the stories are didactic, much like those of Aesop's Fables and the stories of Jean de La Fontaine. Uncle Remus is a kindly old former slave who serves as a storytelling device, passing on the folktales to children gathered around him. Br'er Rabbit ("Brother Rabbit") is the main character of the stories, a likable character, prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a lump of tar and puts clothing on it. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the "tar baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as Tar Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and becomes stuck.

Book Uncle Remus Returns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Uncle Remus Returns Classic Reprint written by Joel Chandler Harris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Remus Returns The stories included in this volume appeared during 1905-06 in the Metropolitan Magazine. They are told by Uncle Remus, but the little boy who listens to them is the son of the "little boy" of the early volumes. He is visiting his grandmother ("Miss Sally") on the plantation where his father grew up and, in his turn, has become the devoted follower of the old darkey. It was the intention of the author to continue this series and to gather the stories eventually into a fifth volume of Uncle Remus tales. But his editorial duties on the Uncle Remus Magazine absorbed most of the energy of his last two years and the projected volume was not completed. Book excerpt: Nights with Uncle Remus presents 71 of Harris's, or Uncle Remus’, most popular narratives, featuring Brer Rabbit, African American trickster tales, Sea Island legends, and spine tingling ghost stories. For more than a hundred years, the tales of Joel Chandler Harris have entertained and influenced both readers and writers and none less that the tales and stories of Brer Rabbit told by Uncle Remus, stories like: "The Moon in the Mill-Pond," “Mr. Fox and Miss Goose,” “The Story of the Pigs, “ “Why the Alligator's Back is Rough,” “Why the Guinea-fowls are speckled,” “The Night before Christmas,” …..and of course a healthy number of Brer Rabbit tales like: “Brer Rabbit's Love-charm,” “Brer Rabbit rescues Brer Terrapin” “Brer Rabbit and the Mosquitoes” and many other Brer Rabbit stories. These stories, and others like them, have inspired writers from Mark Twain to William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison, which helped revolutionise modern children's story telling and literature. • Pages : 156 pages

Book excerpt: A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.
