Book Radiological Risk Assessment and Environmental Analysis

Download or read book Radiological Risk Assessment and Environmental Analysis written by John E. Till and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiological Risk Assessment and Environmental Analysis comprehensively explains methods used for estimating risk to people exposed to radioactive materials released to the environment by nuclear facilities or in an emergency such as a nuclear terrorist event. This is the first book that merges the diverse disciplines necessary for estimating where radioactive materials go in the environment and the risk they present to people. It is not only essential to managers and scientists, but is also a teaching text. The chapters are arranged to guide the reader through the risk assessment process, beginning with the source term (where the radioactive material comes from) and ending with the conversion to risk. In addition to presenting mathematical models used in risk assessment, data is included so the reader can perform the calculations. Each chapter also provides examples and working problems. The book will be a critical component of the rebirth of nuclear energy now taking place, as well as an essential resource to prepare for and respond to a nuclear emergency.

Book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities

Download or read book Structural Shielding Design for Medical X ray Imaging Facilities written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by NCRP. This book was released on 2004 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Report No. 147 (2004) presents recommendations and technical information related to the design and installation of structural shielding for facilities that use x rays for medical imaging. The purpose of structural shielding is to limit radiation exposure to employees and members of the public. The information supersedes the recommendations that address such facilities in NCRP Report No. 49, Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X Rays and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV, which was issued in September 1976. NCRP Report No. 147 includes a discussion of the various factors to be considered in the selection of appropriate shielding materials and in the calculation of barrier thicknesses. The Report presents the fundamentals of radiation shielding, discusses shielding design goals for controlled and uncontrolled areas in or near x-ray imaging facilities and defines the relationship of these goals to the NCRP effective dose limits for radiation workers and members of the public. The Report includes a detailed discussion of the recommended shielding design methodology for x-ray imaging facilities and provides an extensive collection of shielding data and sample shielding calculations for various types of x-ray imaging facilities. The Report is mainly intended for those individuals who specialize in radiation protection. However, it will also be of interest to architects, hospital administrators and related professionals concerned with the planning of new facilities that use x rays for medical imaging.

Book Radiation Protection and Measurement Issues Related to Cargo Scanning with Accelerator Produced High energy X Rays

Download or read book Radiation Protection and Measurement Issues Related to Cargo Scanning with Accelerator Produced High energy X Rays written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. Scientific Committee 6-5 on Radiation Protection and Measurement Issues Related to Cargo Scanning with High-Energy X Rays Produced by Accelerators and published by National Council on Radiation Protection & Measurements. This book was released on 2008 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its series of publications related to countermeasures against nuclear and radiological terrorism, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements has prepared three commentaries on subjects related to the radiation protection and measurement aspects of security surveillance systems. This commentary, sponsored by the DHS Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, focuses on the application of high-energy X-rays, produced by accelerators, in the detection of weapons and radioactive material at US border crossings. It provides an in-depth evaluation of two main aspects of Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography Systems (CAARS) operations. The first aspect involves the consideration of all aspects of CAARS radiation safety, including accelerator safety controls, a radiation protection plan for system operators, and an analysis of the range of doses that could be received. The second major area of discussion in the commentary involves CAARS radiation measurement techniques, instrumentation, and dosimetry. In addition, the primary elements of a CAARS quality assurance program are described. B&w photos and images are included. The commentary was prepared by Scientific Committee 6-5 on Radiation Protection and Measurement Issues Related to Cargo Scanning with High- Energy X-rays Produced by Accelerators. There is no subject index.
