Book Performance Based Creep Life Estimation for Gas Turbines Application

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate and reliable component life prediction is crucial to ensure both the safety and economics of gas turbine operations. In the pursuit of improved accuracy and reliability, current model-based creep life estimation methods have become more and more complicated and therefore demand huge amounts of work and significant amounts of computational time. Because of the underlying problems arising from current life estimation methods, this research aims to develop an alternative performance-based creep life estimation method that is able to provide a quick solution to creep life prediction while at the same time maintaining the achieved accuracy and reliability as that of the model-based method. Using an artificial neural network, the existing creep life prediction subprocesses and secondary inputs are 'absorbed' into simple parallel computing units that are able to create direct mapping between various gas turbine operating and health conditions or gas path sensors and creep life. The outcome of this research is the creation of three proposed neural-based creep life prediction architectures known as the Range-Based, Functional-Based and Sensor-Based. An integrated creep life estimation model was first developed and incorporated into an in-house performance simulation and diagnostics software. Using the integrated model, the effects of several operating and health parameters on a selected turbo-shaft engine model turbine blade's creep life was initially performed using an introduced Creep Factor approach. The outcomes of this investigation were then used to populate input-output samples to train and validate the neural-based creep life prediction architectures. To ensure that the proposed neural architectures are able to achieve generalisation and produce accurate creep life prediction for both clean and degraded engine conditions, four-stage assessments were carried out. Finally, the effects of input uncertainties on the creep life prediction were investigated to assess how sensitive the proposed architectures are to different levels of uncertainty. The results show that all of the proposed neural architectures were able to produce accurate creep life predictions for both clean and degraded engine conditions. When comparing the three proposed architectures, the Sensor-Based architecture was found to be the most accurate in both conditions. Despite the accurate creep life prediction, it was also found that all of the proposed architectures were sensitive to input uncertainties with the Functional-Based architecture being the least sensitive to the uncertainty.

This book was released on 2018-09-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two series of low cycle fatigue (LCF) test data for two groups of different aircraft gas turbine engine compressor disk geometries were reanalyzed and compared using Weibull statistics. Both groups of disks were manufactured from titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy. A NASA Glenn Research Center developed probabilistic computer code Probable Cause was used to predict disk life and reliability. A material-life factor A was determined for titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) alloy based upon fatigue disk data and successfully applied to predict the life of the disks as a function of speed. A comparison was made with the currently used life prediction method based upon crack growth rate. Applying an endurance limit to the computer code did not significantly affect the predicted lives under engine operating conditions. Failure location prediction correlates with those experimentally observed in the LCF tests. A reasonable correlation was obtained between the predicted disk lives using the Probable Cause code and a modified crack growth method for life prediction. Both methods slightly overpredict life for one disk group and significantly under predict it for the other.Melis, Matthew E. and Zaretsky, Erwin V. and August, RichardGlenn Research CenterAIRCRAFT ENGINES; GAS TURBINE ENGINES; PROBABILITY THEORY; RELIABILITY; FAILURE ANALYSIS; LIFE (DURABILITY); FATIGUE TESTS; WEIBULL DENSITY FUNCTIONS; PREDICTION ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES; STRESS ANALYSIS; THERMAL STRESSES; TEMPERATURE EFFECTS; RESIDUAL STRESS; CRACK PROPAGATION; COMPUTER PROGRAMS; ALUMINUM ALLOYS; TITANIUM ALLOYS; VANADIUM ALLOYS

Book Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines

Download or read book Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines written by Francesco Montomoli and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces design techniques developed to increase the safety of aircraft engines, and demonstrates how the application of stochastic methods can overcome problems in the accurate prediction of engine lift caused by manufacturing error. This in turn addresses the issue of achieving required safety margins when hampered by limits in current design and manufacturing methods. The authors show that avoiding the potential catastrophe generated by the failure of an aircraft engine relies on the prediction of the correct behaviour of microscopic imperfections. This book shows how to quantify the possibility of such failure, and that it is possible to design components that are inherently less risky and more reliable. This new, updated and significantly expanded edition gives an introduction to engine reliability and safety to contextualise this important issue, evaluates newly-proposed methods for uncertainty quantification as applied to jet engines. Uncertainty Quantification in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aircraft Engines will be of use to gas turbine manufacturers and designers as well as CFD practitioners, specialists and researchers. Graduate and final year undergraduate students in aerospace or mathematical engineering may also find it of interest.

Book Structural Prognostics and Health Management in Power Energy Systems

Download or read book Structural Prognostics and Health Management in Power Energy Systems written by Dong Wang and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of preparing an Energies Special Issue on “Structural Prognostics and Health Management in Power & Energy Systems” is to compile information on the recent advances in structural prognostics and health management (SPHM). Continued improvements on SPHM have been made possible through advanced signature analysis, performance degradation assessment, as well as accurate modeling of failure mechanisms by introducing advanced mathematical approaches/tools. Through combining deterministic and probabilistic modeling techniques, research on SPHM can provide assurance for new structures at a design stage and ensure construction integrity at a fabrication phase. Specifically, power and energy system failures occur under multiple sources of uncertainty/variability resulting from load variations in usage, material properties, geometry variations within tolerances, and other uncontrolled variations. Thus, advanced methods and applications for theoretical, numerical, and experimental contributions that address these issues on SPHM are desired and expected, which attempt to prevent overdesign and unnecessary inspection and provide tools to enable a balance between safety and economy to be achieved. This Special Issue has attracted submissions from China, USA, Portugal, and Italy. A total of 26 submissions were received and 11 articles finally published.

Book Creep fatigue Interaction in Aircraft Gas Turbine Components by Simulation and Testing at Scaled Temperatures

Download or read book Creep fatigue Interaction in Aircraft Gas Turbine Components by Simulation and Testing at Scaled Temperatures written by Mohammad Hossein Sabour and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced gas turbine engines, which use hot section airfoil cooling, present a wide range of design problems. The frequencies of applied loads and the natural frequencies of the blade also are important since they have significant effects on failure of the component due to fatigue phenomenon. Due to high temperature environment the thermal creep and fatigue are quite severe. One-dimensional creep model, using ANSYS has been formulated in order to predict the creep life of a gas turbine engine blade. Innovative mathematical models for the prediction of the operating life of aircraft components, specifically gas turbine blades, which are subjected to creep-fatigue at high temperatures, are proposed. The components are modeled by FEM, mathematically, and using similitude principles. Three models have been suggested and evaluated numerically and experimentally. Using FEM method for natural frequencies causes phenomena such as curve veering which is studied in more detail. The simulation studies on the life-limiting modes of failure, as well as estimating the expected lifetime of the blade, using the proposed models have been carried out. Although the scale model approach has been used for quite some time, the thermal scaling has been used in this study for the first time. The only thermal studies in literature using scaling for structures is by NASA in which materials of both the prototype and the model are the same, but in the present study materials also are different. The finite element method is employed to model the structure. Because of stress redistribution due to the creep process, it is necessary to include a full inelastic creep step in the finite element formulation. Otherwise over-conservative creep life predictions will be estimated if only the initial elastic stresses are considered. The experimental investigations are carried out in order to validate the models. The main contributions in the thesis are: (1) Using similitude theory for life prediction of components in general, and specifically using thermal scaling for the first time for prototype and model with two different materials. (2) Developing 1-D creep ANSYS macro to study creep effects to get meaningful results for industrial applications of gas turbine blade. (3) Analyzing the curve veering and flattening phenomena in rotating blade at thermal environment, using Lagrange-Bhat method. (4) Simple constitutive models in creep-fatigue interaction are proposed that can predict the lifetime in complicated situations of creep-fatigue, using the pure creep and pure fatigue test data.
