Book excerpt: In the last 10 years we have experienced a seismic shift in media culture, as the social media revolution of the noughties has brought vastly expanded networking, mobility and connection. This shift has significantly altered the making of art as well as the ways that audiences engage with art. Unsitely Aesthetics seeks to describe and undersatand these changes in art production and its accompanying new aesthetics, coining the term "unsitely" to point to the dispersed way that many artists are now making work across the networks both online and offline. A departure point for the book is the idea that the traditional art historical term of site and site-specificity offers a new and strategic way to understand the shifiting and troubled relationship of artwork and audience in network culture. This is a counterintuitive move against the sense of network culture as immaterial flows in a placeless word, thus underlining the situatedness of the making and experincing of art that is still significant. The book suggests that with the unsitely aesthetics of today's contemporary artists there is the possibility of a more democratic art with the internet acting as a public space for artists to encounter and even call forth new publics.

Voice has returned to both theoretical and artistic agendas. In the digital era, techniques and technologies of voice have provoked insistent questioning of the distinction between the human voice and the voice of the machine, between genuine and synthetic affect, between the uniqueness of an individual voice and the social and cultural forces that shape it. This volume offers interdisciplinary perspectives on these topics from history, philosophy, cultural theory, film, dance, poetry, media arts, and computer games. Many chapters demonstrate Lewis Mumford's idea of the “cultural preparation” that precedes technological innovation—that socially important new technologies are foreshadowed in philosophy, the arts, and everyday pastimes. Chapters cover such technologies as voice mail, podcasting, and digital approximations of the human voice. Not content with the often dry tone of academic writing, the author engages a “wayfaring” process that brings together theories of sound, animal, and posthumanist studies in order to change the ways we think about and act with the assemblages of living creatures, things, places, and histories around us. Neumark evokes both the literal—the actual voices within the works she examines—and the metaphorical—in a new materialist exploration of voice encompassing human, animal, thing, and assemblages. She engages with artists working with animal sounds and voices; voices of place, placed voices in installation works; voices of technology; and “unvoicing,” disturbances in the image/voice relationship and in the idea of what voice is. She writes about remixes, the Barbie Liberation Organisation, and breath in Beijing, about cat videos, speaking fences in Australia, and an artist who reads (to) the birds. Book excerpt: A starting point and inspiration for the exhibition/symposium was Chris Kraus¿s short text ¿Kelly Lake Store and Other Stories,¿ a text that speaks to the dilemmas of globalization and the growing inequality that the current form of globalized capital is creating. For Kraus, as for philosopher Jeff Malpas, "place" and where you are in the world, matter. In the context of our constant connection through the internet, it can seem as if actual, physical and material place has diminished in importance. The proposition of the exhibition and this publication is, on the contrary, that physical, material place is still of the greatest importance. It still matters, even if the ways that it matters are contested and varied. The project recognized that one of the strengths of artist-run initiatives is their appearance and presence in a specific location/place. This focus on location/place recognized the importance of local production and local knowledge and by inviting a range of ARIs from across Australia and the Asia Pacific the exhibition performed a program of `trans-locality¿ that is, ¿the local in relation to local rather than local to global.¿ In writing of the significance of the `trans-local¿ curator Nina Möntmann concludes that it is small artist-run spaces and initiatives that hold out the possibility for an alternative to the dominant and ubiquitous neoliberal economies which fuel the international and globalized `branded and franchised¿ art institutions that run mainly for profit. Concurring with Möntmann¿s critique of our current situation, the project, both the exhibition and symposium invited a range of ARIs to engage in a material conversation on the importance of place, for them, through sending us artworks. These material objects of expression became testament to the connections and networks that were made in the course of the project.
