Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament law is foundational for our understanding of the Bible, but for many it remains some of the Old Testament's most foreign and exotic material. This book by a leading evangelical expert in biblical law helps readers understand Old Testament law, how it functioned in the Old Testament, and how it is (and is not) instructive for contemporary Christians. The author explicates the often confusing legal system of ancient Israel, differentiates between time-bound cultural aspects of Israelite law and universally applicable aspects of the divine value system, and shows the ethical relevance of Old Testament law for Christians today.

Book Biblical Narrative and the Formation of Rabbinic Law

Download or read book Biblical Narrative and the Formation of Rabbinic Law written by Jane L. Kanarek and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new framework for understanding the relationship between biblical narrative and rabbinic law. Drawing on legal theory and models of rabbinic exegesis, Jane L. Kanarek argues for the centrality of biblical narrative in the formation of rabbinic law. Through close readings of selected Talmudic and midrashic texts, Kanarek demonstrates that rabbinic legal readings of narrative scripture are best understood through the framework of a referential exegetical web. She shows that law should be viewed as both prescriptive of normative behavior and as a meaning-making enterprise. By explicating the hermeneutical processes through which biblical narratives become resources for legal norms, this book transforms our understanding of the relationship of law and narrative as well as the ways in which scripture becomes a rabbinic document that conveys legal authority and meaning.

Book Sexual Violation in Islamic Law

Download or read book Sexual Violation in Islamic Law written by Hina Azam and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed analysis of Islamic juristic writings on the topic of rape and argues that classical Islamic jurisprudence contained nuanced, substantially divergent doctrines of sexual violation as a punishable crime. The work centers on legal discourses of the first six centuries of Islam, the period during which these discourses reached their classical forms, and chronicles the juristic conflict over whether or not to provide monetary compensation to victims. Along with tracing the emergence and development of this conflict over time, Hina Azam explains evidentiary ramifications of each of the two competing positions, which are examined through debates between the Ḥanafī and Mālikī schools of law. This study examines several critical themes in Islamic law, such as the relationship between sexuality and property, the tension between divine rights and personal rights in sex crimes, and justifications of victim's rights afforded by the two competing doctrines.

Book Women Ideology and Violence

Download or read book Women Ideology and Violence written by Cheryl Anderson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheryl Anderson examines the laws relating to women that are found in the Book of the Covenant and the Deuteronomic law. She argues that the laws can be divided into those that treat women similarly to men (defined as 'inclusive' laws) and those that treat women differently ('exclusive' laws). She then suggests that the exclusive laws, which construct gender as male dominance/female subordination, do not just describe violence against women but are inherently violent toward women. As a non-historical critique of ideology, critical theory is used to offer analytical insights that have significant implications for understanding gender constructions in both ancient and contemporary settings.

Theophanie, by way of the scriptures quoted in The One-Flesh Covenant, brings to light, through the power of the Holy Spirit, truths that have been rejected by the body of Christ for generations, truths that are foundational and crucial to every life and marriage, and truths that are able to change the behavior of this generation and generations to come. She exposes the false doctrines that permeate the church today in the areas of marriage and divorce, and with correlating scriptures she correctly interprets scriptures that have been misinterpreted for years""scriptures that God has mercifully sent to heal the broken-hearted, comfort the afflicted, and set the captives free. The One-Flesh Covenant is a must-read for every member of the body of Christ as it will enable those who receive its truths to no longer portray Jesus as the God of grace without obedience to faith, the God of faith without works, the God of mercy without justice and the God of forgiveness without repentance and bearing one's cross. No longer will she turn to idols for instruction in righteousness""church leaders who, knowingly or unknowingly, subvert the scriptures to the destruction of millions of souls""but to the Word of God, Jesus Christ.
