Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes a new proof of the existence of God, based on a development of elements found in Patristic and Scholastic philosophical tradition, in particular of St. Augustine, St. Anselm and St. Thomas Aquinas. Traditionally the existence of God has been seen in relation to the essence of Truth: its unchanging and eternal essence is used as a proof of the eternal existence of a personal God. The strategy of our demonstration is to investigate the concept of Truth from the perspective of a definition, which can be called “inclusive”: it proposes to formulate, complementary to formal, purely abstract definitions of Truth, also a definition that includes the real personal elements that are necessarily implied in the abstract definition. It shows the necessity of including in it, in the first place, the primary Real Being, God, which is also the primary Intellect; and, related to it, our finite, human intellect, not necessary in itself, but of course essential to our very nature. Claudio Pierantoni is Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the University of Chile (Universidad de Chile) and Professor of Latin Literature at the Universidad de los Andes, Chile. He was former Professor of Church History and Patrology at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic Pontifical University of Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile).

Book Seneca the Elder and His Rediscovered Historiae ab initio bellorum civilium

This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refreshed insights into early-imperial Roman historiography this book offers are linked to a recent discovery. In the spring of 2014, the binders of the archive of Robert Marichal were dusted off by the ERC funded project PLATINUM (ERC-StG 2014 n°636983) in response to Tiziano Dorandi’s recollections of a series of unpublished notes on Latin texts on papyrus. Among these was an in-progress edition of the Latin rolls from Herculaneum, together with Marichal’s intuition that one of them had to be ascribed to a certain ‘Annaeus Seneca’. PLATINUM followed the unpublished intuition by Robert Marichal as one path of investigation in its own research and work. Working on the Latin P.Herc. 1067 led to confirm Marichal’s intuitions and to go beyond it: P.Herc. 1067 is the only extant direct witness to Seneca the Elder’s Historiae. Bringing a new and important chapter of Latin literature arise out of a charred papyrus is significant. The present volume is made up of two complementary sections, each of which contains seven contributions. They are in close dialogue with each other, as looking at the same literary matter from several points of view yields undeniable advantages and represents an innovative and fruitful step in Latin literary criticism. These two sections express the two different but interlinked axes along which the contributions were developed. On one side, the focus is on the starting point of the debate, namely the discovery of the papyrus roll transmitting the Historiae of Seneca the Elder and how such a discovery can be integrated with prior knowledge about this historiographical work. On the other side, there is a broader view on early-imperial Roman historiography, to which the new perspectives opened by the rediscovery of Seneca the Elder’s Historiae greatly contribute.

Book The History of Philosophy from Thomas Aquinas to Kant

Download or read book The History of Philosophy from Thomas Aquinas to Kant written by Martin Heidegger and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Martin Heidegger's early work "The History of Philosophy from Thomas Aquinas to Kant" (original German "Die Vorlesung Geschichte der Philosophie von Thomas von Aquin bis Kant"), originally published in 1926. This edition contains a new afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Heidegger's life and works, a philosophic index of core Heideggerian concepts and a guide for terminology across 19th and 20th century Existentialists. This translation is designed for readability and accessibility to Heidegger's enigmatic and dense philosophy. Complex and specific philosophic terms are translated as literally as possible and academic footnotes have been removed to ensure easy reading. It begins by situating Thomas Aquinas in the philosophical lineage, not to emphasize the Middle Ages or Catholic thought per se, but to trace the development of philosophical problems and methods from Aquinas to Kant. The paper emphasizes Aquinas's central role in consolidating general metaphysics through his interpretation of Aristotle, thereby laying the groundwork for subsequent philosophical developments. The narrative then moves on to examine the philosophical transformations initiated by Descartes, highlighting his introduction of the ego as a new principle of consciousness and reason. This shift marks a significant departure from medieval philosophical themes and sets the stage for the modern era of philosophy. The paper emphasizes how these new directions in philosophy, while breaking away from medieval thought, still carried forward fundamental ontological concerns. It also examines how these evolving philosophical approaches, particularly through figures such as Spinoza, Leibniz, and Kant, grappled with the nature of being, existence, and the systematic pursuit of knowledge. Throughout the text, the focus is on the continuity and transformation of fundamental philosophical problems, rather than a mere succession of opinions or theories. The work contextualizes these shifts within broader intellectual movements, including the transition from medieval to modern thought and the deepening exploration of metaphysical questions. The analysis of Kant's work, especially his Critique of Pure Reason, is presented as the culmination of these philosophical developments, bringing new depth and complexity to the understanding of metaphysical problems. In sum, the paper provides a detailed historical and conceptual mapping of the philosophical journey from Aquinas to Kant, emphasizing the enduring and evolving nature of fundamental philosophical inquiry.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the first critical edition of Matthew of Orléans' Sophistaria, dating from the first half of the thirteenth century. The genre is closely related to the Syncategoreumata-treatises and Sophisma-collections, which all deal with logico-semantic problems, but each in a different way. The Sophistaria-treatise takes commonly used logical, semantic and grammatical distinctions as its starting point and subsequently moves to the discussion of puzzling sophisma-sentences these distinctions are exemplified in. The volume contains a broad introduction, as well as extensive indexes of names, sources (loci), subjects, and sophisma-sentences.

Book Early Thirteenth Century English Franciscan Thought

Download or read book Early Thirteenth Century English Franciscan Thought written by Lydia Schumacher and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteenth century was a dynamic period in intellectual history which witnessed the establishment of the first universities, most famously at Paris and Oxford. At these and other major European centres of learning, English-born Franciscans came to hold prominent roles both in the university faculties of the arts and theology and in the local studia across Europe that were primarily responsible for training Franciscans. This volume explores the contributions to scholarship of some of the leading English Franciscans or Franciscan associates from this period, including Roger Bacon, Adam Marsh, John Pecham, Thomas of Yorke, Roger Marston, Robert Grosseteste, Adam of Exeter, Richard Rufus of Cornwall, and Bartholomew of England. Through focussed studies of these figures’ signature ideas, contributions will provide a basis for drawing comparisons between the English Franciscan school and others that existed at the time, most famously at Paris.
